1hbh grip

I used to have a one-handed backhand...

I switched to a 2handed backhand...

Now from time to time during practice rallies, i throw some 1handers in there. Basically i am trying to gradually incorporate it back into my game. I currently use a continental grip on my 1handers, but am able to get an ample amount of topspin on it.

My question is, is it ok tht i use a conti grip for my backhand, or will it hinder my ability to create topspin later down the road?(i am only 14 years old)

Well, you may angle the ball creating a lob instead. That's the only real concern with the continental grip and the one-handed backhand.

I would (and did) switch from a cont bh grip to an eastern or semiwestern bh grip. It is easier to drive the ball, you get better hand support, you don't have take the ball so late, topspin is easy and you don't have to use so much wrist. It simply an easier and more stable shot with a modern grip.

is use something between eastern and cont and it works great for me, but my wrist does get a bit sore...
so i might change it

if modern tennis evolved from a conti bh grip to eastern bh or extreme eastern bh grip it must be better.

With the continental grip on the 1HB the wrist does not have enough support to really drive through the ball. I assume the reason your wrist is sore is because it is moving at impact. Switching to an eastern backhand grip will firm up the wrist and in return will give more stability to the racquet head, allowing you to drive through the ball more effectively. With that being said, I do know people that use the continental grip for the 1HB, and it can work, but there are limits with this grip.

Topspin is a manifestation of your swing not your grip. I can hit topspin that kicks up off the court with an eastern grip if I wanted to. Use the grip that feels comfortable for you and focus more on your preparation, swing and followthrough.

I generally agree with this thought on the fh side. On the bh side it is a little different, as far as using the continental grip is concerned. The racquet face is naturally open with this grip, you have to really turn your wrist to get it neutral. The hand is too much on the inside of the grip to add any reinforcement which is important against strong pace and a heavy ball.

Trying to effectively return a heavy ball from your waist up with a continental grip is no fun. You have to make contact quite late to keep the racquet face neutral. If you hit too early or in front it is either going out or will be a lob if you are lucky.

Now I'm not saying it can be done because it can. I'm sure there are people out there with killer continental 1hbhs. It just takes more effort than using an ebh or swbh grip in my opinion.
