Missed volley def messed up Z. The good news for him is Berd too is still struggling with the forehand. But I don't know man, this guy looks very fragile. He has the talent. If he can serve like that on Center Court facing Berdych, he sure has talent. But if he can't control his volatile mood, how is he going to put together 7 BO5 matches in a row?

Definetely. He's a guy for the future - ever since he stood up in Hamburg two years ago we all knew that.
He had triple set points in this set, so far lost 2. Another chance for the guy.

Gets the 3rd but this was mostly Berd completely going off the rails and gifting him the set. If of course Berd fails to get his rhythm back, Zverev might go through but I am not holding my breath. When Berd finds his range on the forehand, Z is toast. Berd has also volleyed beautifully at times today. 9/10, awesome volley conversion. I hate Berd but damn his tennis is awesome when he's on.

Step's a Moravian from Silesia (area formerly in Poland). Grew up worshipping Lendl, from same region. But then, so is Berdych from there. One of those little places with tennis in the water.

Zverev-tank kicking in now for sure. The fact that he gives up (and he does it in BO3 if the third set starts to slip away) does not augur well for the future. I do question his fight if he gives up so soon.

But the Big Three weren't at this stage. I know Nole used to get derided for retiring (even Fed induged himself to it in yet another of Fed's famous last words syndrome). But he never tanked this way. Look at the last few points, just horrible. Not even trying to get racquet on ball. Spintowin was harsh but he probably called it with Z. Petulant.

Not writing him off but I do think his attitude needs to change radically for him to win big in tennis. I wouldn't want to judge but tanking at Wimbledon is just not on. It is disrespectful to the opponent and the audience but more importantly tennis is a game of glorious uncertainty like cricket so he ought not to give up the match this way.

I don't remember what Thiem was like at 19. But at least now he is relatively calm and collected. He might lose still but it won't be for want of effort. Damn, even Genie used to and still tries harder in her miserable El Collapso episodes than what I just saw from Z. Such a shame, after hanging with Berd quite impressively. And again, I wouldn't judge this if I hadn't already seen him fall apart similarly against Thiem on clay. It's a pattern and it's one he needs to break. I get that he's 19 but even so, the sooner the better.

Zverev is not the dominant now and his Halle run had a bunch of three set matches. He can play much stronger tennis than today and really was impressive in Halle and put it all together for the defeat of Fed. He was really out of gas at the Nice final. He lost fair and square today because he couldn't take care of Youzhny more efficiently and didn't have a full tank for today. This was physical today and he just turned 19. He's having a great year this year with nice results on grass and clay. He'll fall back when the tour gets back to hard courts. Next year he might get some Thiem 2015 like results and then hopefully more the next year. He's already 26 in the live rankings and hopefully will keep himself within top 32 for majors. I think he's a lock for a future top ten player, but its too soon to say he'll be more. He needs jump his stats another notch next year. Thiem too is moving up, but doesn't have the stats of someone like 2008 Djokovic yet, but he's getting very close on points numbers. Thiem should be much more interesting to watch on hard courts this year as he was horrible just one year ago.
Zverev has been holding serve pretty easily on grass which has helped him win. Berdych totalled derailed Zverev on serve and really made him work. I don't think I've seen Berdych play this well in a long, long time.

I had no business picking Zverev in either league. I know him well and after 5 sets with Youzhny he was not going to be sharp for this match. My Berdy bias cost me today. I need Vesely to win in straight sets over Sousa to partially redeem this day in Prediction league.

Zverev wasn't beating Berdych on a grass court even if Zverev had 6 days rest! He isn't close to being able to do that yet. Berdych is too experienced. Stop smoking the cheap stuff.
