2019 All TT Team - 4.0 Men

For the next All TT Team for 2019, I'll continue with the 4.0 men. This is a hotly contested level with quite a few TTers that opted in.

As a reminder, the All TT Teams are formed from those Talk Tennis users that opt-in to being candidates, and then taking the top-N players by level using my ratings. For 4.0s, I am taking the top-8.

On to the list!

My ratings for these 8 players range from 3.98 to 4.45, a 4.0 would have made the 4.5 team! In alphabetical order they are:

@BallBag
@brettatk
@djkahn86
@dsp9753
@J_R_B
@LeftyJunk
@Matthew ATX
@therecanbeonlyone

Congrats guys!

So TR and TLS have me at ~3.85 and there's about 30 other 4.0s in my area that are rated higher. I never really believed those sites were good for absolute numbers but I thought the relative numbers are close enough. So either TR is way off on everything or 4.5 is going to be very cozy.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to make the list this year. The other sites have me at 3.73 and 3.80. I thought I should be a little higher than those. My 18+ and 40+ teams I thought weren't going to have any casualties this year. But now I'm wondering because I know some of the guys are higher rated than myself.

Thanks @schmke!

fyi those sites are known to be extremely unreliable in both directions. So just because they're higher rated than you on there doesn't mean USTA has them rated above you.

Right. I know not to rely on those sites but sometimes forget how off they can be.

I know how you feel though. TR has a truly ridiculous number of 4.5s getting bumped down in my area. Ive been wondering lately if its not just vastly underrating everyone everywhere. But that would mean its somewhat consistent in one direction which it has never really proven to be before. I really dont know how to feel.

So the worst 4.0 is .02 from 4.5 and the best is .05 from 5.0?

How would this ringer squad do at nationals?

J
Lose to Texas or Intermountain in the semifinals followed by a very detailed grievance of the team that beat them.

Sweet I made it! Probably also means I am going to get bumped too. =(
Awesome!

Crossing my fingers that I'm the 3.98, lol.

While the range is from 3.98 to 4.45, spots 4 thru 8 are 3.98 thru 4.01, so most of the group are right on the edge.

Interesting. TR has me at 3.90, and I didn't make the cut here. Maybe I won't get bumped after all as it seems Schmke's system is more predicative.

3.90 isn't that far from what I have you, but yeah, you were short of the #8 spot at 3.98.

Well, one of the members (not me, LOL) was 4-0 at 18s nationals losing 16 total games in 8 sets (so average match score of 6-2 6-2), so there you go.

If 3.98 was the cutoff, I'm shocked I made the team. My season was pretty average. I was 14-13 overall and have a TR rating of 3.86.

Wow. That’s gotta be our ringer. Congrats to whoever that is. I’m guessing not any of the 4 of us who were on this list last year.
I haven’t even been able to hit a rally ball forehand I’m not disgusted with this year.
But sounds like you’ve got a good shot to get bumped this year... and a good shot to appeal down too if you want.

@leech will be on this list in 2020. i have no doubt.

The only way that will happen is if the USTA moves the arbitrary cutoff line between 4.0/4.5 to just above me, so that anyone better than me gets bumped up! I’ve been owned by a handful of 4.0 guys in my region this year.

I made the team again! Just as others have stated... the rating range here has me higher that the other two unreliable sites. My UTR is a 6.27 in doubles which is all that I play.

I was 4-1 in 40+ 4.0 this summer. 8-2 in 18+ 4.0 in the winter/spring with one of those losses to a selfrate 4.0 that played in college... and 1-3 in 18+ 4.5 with two of those losses ending in supers.

So I'm assuming I'm one of the four at the lower range.

A huge thank you for putting this together again!

The more you guys put your stats out there, the more I think I’m one of the lower guys on this list. I got a report from @schmke before State playoffs that had me in the bump-up range. However that didn’t include 2 close dubs losses with a self-rated partner who also played 3.5, and one singles victory against a self rate.
Then I went to States and had a weird few matches. I got smoked in dubs by 2 upper-level guys. Then I teamed up with one of our weaker players and narrowly lost a match against a couple of mid-range guys. Finally, I double bagelled a 3.5 in singles.
It will be interesting to see how all that shakes out.

I stayed at 4.0. A few surprises, in my mind, were bumped up. Also at least 2 of the local 4.5s who clearly tanked last season did not get the bump down that they were so desperate for.

I stayed at 4.0. There were also a couple surprises in my local area but they partnered with former college selfrates and got bumped right along with them! hahahaha

Two of my doubles partners bumped up to 4.5. One of my self-rate 3.5 partners bumped up to 4.0. The self rate guy I beat 2,4 in singles bumped up to 4.5. Then 2 of my dubs opponents at States bumped up to 4.5, and the guy I double bagelled in singles at States bumped up to 4.0 from 3.5.

No bump for me. As I said, I was surprised I was even that close considering the nondescript year I had (14-13).

I was bumped but was able to appeal back down to 4.0A.

I was moved up from a self rated 3.5 to computer rated 4.0. That was my goal for the end of the season, I’m pretty happy with that. :)

Next year 4.5!

I wasn't bumped to 4.5. A few people I have higher UTRs than did get bumped but they had matches in sectionals, which seems to be the clear trend.

So, it looks like we had a really accurate list here, even without knowing that certain sections would be targeted with a big bump. I’m conflicted on how I feel about it, honestly. Believing that I was very close to the threshold, but also being in Southern Section and not being part of the wave of bumps. Maybe I wasn’t as close as I thought.

Shhhh maybe they just missed you. Stay cool and blend in.
