After the US Open, Brooksby said that he wanted to play challenger tournaments in the fall and then decide if he was going to turn pro or not. What is interesting is that he only played in the Houston challenger since the US Open and lost to the eventual champion Marcos Giron in the second round. I live in Houston and would have attended but didn't know until after the fact. Baylor may have been fortunate that Brooksby had a tough draw but who knows if one tournament can change things.

Really? I thought for every credit taken, one has to spend at least 3 (4 hours for most people) outside of the classroom to study, Therefore, a student who takes 15 credits in a semester will spend at least 15 hours in the classroom and another 60 hours outside of the classroom to study. That equal to 75 hours. How is it possible for these guys to play pro events during the school year and study at the same time?
When I was in college and dinosaurs roamed the earth, undergrads supposedly spent 3 hours outside the classroom for each credit hour, and 4 hours for master's degree programs. I saw a survey of how much time undergrads today were spending outside classes, and it was shockingly low to me.

Clark is on the money. College must be less demanding nowadays. I remember the amount time I spent on studies outside of the classroom. Playing a varsity sport wouldn't have worked very well.

Of course, "when dinosaurs roamed the earth," a tennis player at even an upper-level program probably had a two-hour practice each day, and that was it. Moreover, the tennis team at my alma mater never traveled more than 3-4 hours by bus to play a match during the regular season. They only got on an airplane if they made the NCAAs. The amount of travel most D1 teams do every season nowadays is crazy.

Fall tennis? There was very little of that. Some practice sessions, and maybe, just maybe a weekend tournament. Nowadays, most teams play in five-six weekend tournaments in the fall.

Someone once remarked on this forum, "In college, there are academics, athletics, and a social life. You can pick two of the three, but you can't do all three." Very true, certainly for the top 50-60 programs. It makes D2/3 tennis more appealing to some.

Yeah all those guys you named were super tough competitors in the NCAA quarters in their most recent team match :)

Lah folded so fast at #5 against Andrade, I thought he was going to cry (but he held back the tears unlike his senior leader Bendeck who won approximately ten points in his final collegiate match a court away)

Soto got rocked in the face by a freshman, who has since made big strides and will rock him harder this year

I hope Baylor brings it harder than last year - I traveled to Orlando for that match and thought we must have played Prairie View A&M when it was over an hour later
The Bears will definitely bring it harder next year. No home court advantage for the Gators in Stillwater. Don't think Lah is going to have an off day on the rematch if there is one.

MSState just signed another for Spring 2020, UTR 13
If this is the Danish commit posted on twitter, the player had a UTR high of 13-current UTR is 12.15. Last time he was a 13 was February 2018. He is 20 years old so his ranking must have dropped when he longer could play high level junior ITFs. He only played one men's pro future in the Netherlands in 2017 and lost in the 2nd rd of Qualifying. However, maybe he has been playing high level European club matches...

If brooksby comes to baylor, then I would have to give the nod to them. They have a solid mix of returners and talented incoming freshman/transfers. The biggest issue would probably be the bottom of their lineup and doubles. Knowing Boland though he already has some ideas on how to cover for that.
Another team to watch for would be the Gators. Arguably the team with the best all around singles line up last year. With so many returners this the team will have both the talent and experience.
As sad as it is to say, I don't think Wake will have that strong of a year.

With Nakashima turning pro and with all indications that Brooksby will enroll at Baylor in 2 weeks, I think the Bears are also the clear favorite. Baylor has 4 of the top 30 UTR rankings in college tennis including the #1 ranked player. Boland made another coup a month ago signing Alex Garcia from Leon, Spain who has a UTR of 13.64 who should be at the 5th spot. The 6th spot will have 4 options between Dickerson, Bass or the Frantzen brothers. Doubles have some questions but agree that Boland will have a plan.

I think that is a good goal for the team. They will have a solid squad but they just don't have the same type of heavyweight players like some of the other contenders.
no top player ?? Geller was finalist at US open...……… that is a top player. Brooksby never reached any final at in any majors

Junior US open is not the same as "men" US Open. That really does not mean much. A lot of players didn't really develop until they turn 19 or 20. Geller, who is a year older than Brooksby, is currently has a current ATP ranking of 608 while Brooksby has a current ATP ranking of 269.

if Geller played full time Pro ATP schedule, he would be ranked around #98 in the world right now

Im not disregarding Geller's junior results. He has been ranked top 10 in college tennis as well IIRC but one outstanding guy on the roster doesn't mean the whole squad is great. look at the finalists at last years championship. Both teams had top two who were top 15 players in the nation. While Geller has been top 10, Rotsaert never came close to top 20. If geller or any of these guys on the stanford team were as fantastic as you say, why haven't they left and gone pro? Where has Fawcett been? Im not saying it impossible but just very unlikely given the team's background and what not. At least Sanford has one of the best womens programs around. Disregarding obsessive biases, I just don't see how the guys can win it when these other teams just have a better roster and arguably better plays.

Geller has committed himself to bring the NCAA title to the Farm. That is why he hasn't turned pro yet. Also Rotasart is top 5 in NCAA D1. he is that good. No NCAA team has this strong all around team. Nakashima was the only that could challenge them but he turned pro so he won't be playing anyone in NCAA..

On what do you base that Rotasart is top 5? I'll admit my info was slightly wrong. He is number 18 currently but thats after the fall season which isn't always the best indicator. I like Stanford honestly but being realistic the men don't have that good of a chance to win the title. If im wrong then heck I will admit to it. If not stanford, then who would you select to win the title?

also last side note, but by your approximation, ever player on the team would be top 10 in the ITA rankings right now. Like I just really wanna understand where you're coming from with the fanaticism

Answer: Rotasart is top 5 NCAA like Bruch was top 50 ATP before he had to retire due to jock itch, so there's that. Also you have multiple team names that could be mistaken for the same team that will allow additional chances to get to the top 10. Standford Cardinals, Stanford Cardinal, Redwood tennis and El Palo Alto Sequoias. Hopefully the team will gain enough notoriety due to the confusion Feddie has create around their identity and arrive in the top #10 tennis rankings EOY.

interesting rule change just put into effect. Non-playing student athletes can no longer be Match Coaches, meaning if team has 7 players the 7th player can not be a player coach anymore. Now this obviously does not hurt the big schools, but for smaller schools who may not have Asst Coaches or GA's this hurts. Will be interesting.
Also a potential rule update that will be tested at the Indoor Kick Off weekend and Indoor Championships.

Apparently Patriot league Officials went to NCAA and if you look at the Regs technically NCAA defines a coach as someone receiving compensation and a student coach is someone who has no eligibility remaining, so yes by definition I see it, but makes no sense for tennis and the ITA is looking into finding a solution to make all parties happy.
"NCAA BYLAW 11.01.5 Coach, Student Assistant. [A] A student assistant coach is any coach who is a student-athlete who has exhausted his or her eligibility in the sport or has become injured to the point that he or she is unable to practice or compete ever again, and who meets the following additional criteria: (Revised: 1/9/96, 1/12/04 effective 8/1/04, 3/10/04, 5/26/06, 8/11/09, 4/29/10 effective 8/1/10, 8/7/14, 1/15/16 effective 8/1/16) "

The other rule, will wait and let it play out, but it is something the coaches wanted to test coming out of their December Convention

Just realized that I got the numbers wrong. It was 2 hours plus the class hour for undergrads, e.g. a 15 credit-hour semester was 30 hours of homework and 15 hours in class == 45 hours per week, while master's degree courses took 3 hours of homework for each hour in class, e.g. 12 credit hours == 48 hours total per week.

So, going to school was like having a full time job, no more and no less; 45 or 48 hours per week. Recent surveys indicate less than a full time job, which is sad to me.
