Clark is on the money. College must be less demanding nowadays. I remember the amount time I spent on studies outside of the classroom. Playing a varsity sport wouldn't have worked very well.
Of course, "when dinosaurs roamed the earth," a tennis player at even an upper-level program probably had a two-hour practice each day, and that was it. Moreover, the tennis team at my alma mater never traveled more than 3-4 hours by bus to play a match during the regular season. They only got on an airplane if they made the NCAAs. The amount of travel most D1 teams do every season nowadays is crazy.
Fall tennis? There was very little of that. Some practice sessions, and maybe, just maybe a weekend tournament. Nowadays, most teams play in five-six weekend tournaments in the fall.
Someone once remarked on this forum, "In college, there are academics, athletics, and a social life. You can pick two of the three, but you can't do all three." Very true, certainly for the top 50-60 programs. It makes D2/3 tennis more appealing to some.
