20W20 #20: 2007 QF, Gasquet vs Roddick

Welcome to the 20W20 series! It's been a while since I did the first "20for20" for the Australian Open. This series will be dedicated to tennis's most sacred and prestigious event itself - Wimbledon - and the greatest matches it has produced over this century. I'll be posting one match a day (if I have time) in countdown style, ranking the century's best Wimbledon classics. As always, I know some of you tennis aficionados will disagree with my rankings, but these are MY rankings so deal with it :)

We start with #20, a classic 2007 clash of power vs artistry with Andy Roddick and Richard Gasquet producing a gripping quarterfinal encounter. Roddick, twice the finalist at Wimbledon and the odds-on favorite coming into the match, started strong with his trademark heavy, powerful brand of tennis to seize a commanding 2-set lead and leave the talented Frenchman on the ropes. But rather than backing down, Gasquet changed his tactics, dominating on serve and raising the aggression to edge out the next 2 sets and claw his way back into the match. The final set featured both players at the peak of their capabilities, treating the Centre Court crowd to a thrilling contest which came down to the wire in the 14th game, when Gasquet's grit and courageous shotmaking finally paid off as Roddick faltered on serve to hand Gasquet the win, 4-6 4-6 7-6(2) 7-6(3) 8-6.

The young French phenom had completed a comeback for the ages, out-acing the Ace Machine himself and setting up a semifinal encounter with Roger Federer.
Enjoy!

I thought this was Djokovic.

Nadal collected more Djokovic chokes than vice versa. 2012 AO / 2018 WB were simply the instances where Djokovic managed to resist choking impulses on the brink. That's true of most close matches Nadal loses tbh - on his way to collect another choke but chokes up himself to undermine the effort.

This match is so good no one has bothered to upload a better quality footage.

No shame in this loss for Roddick, as Gasquet would go on and turn out to be a better player than Nadal.

This match and Djokovic-Baghdatis on same day. Best day of tennis ever*.

*Only slight hyperbole
It was a great day but AO08 3R beats it by a long shot. 3 absolutely incredible matches one after another. Fed-Tipsarevic was an insanely underrated match. Tipsarevic was knocking the cover off the ball and serving out of a tree that day. Another case of an underdog who played the match of his life and still lost the epic.
