I was dropping my daughter off at her dance studio around 7:30 and there were sirens and emergency vehicles everywhere. Figured there was an accident or fire or something. Real crime rarely happens in my quiet college town so I wasn't concerned.

As soon as I dropped her off I got a call there was an active shooter loose downtown and an officer down. I called her and tried to go back for her but the street was blocked. Cops from local jurisdictions were flooding in to help with the search. My kid said they locked the studio and turned off the lights and were safe.

I wasn't too worried, the shooting wasn't too close (1/2 mile) but of course as a parent you worry. At this point there wasn't much info, officer down and residents should stay in place and lock doors.

I was able to get my kid at 9. She said her friend's brother was Davis PD and said the officer was killed. No news outlets were reporting this. I stayed up a bit late watching the news and what appeared to be a standoff. At 2am I got a text that the shooter was dead from a self inflicted gunshot in a house near the crime scene. Don't know if he lived there are broke in there after.

It was originally reported the shooter was involved in an car accident and shot the officer responding but this morning I heard the shooter just walked up to the accident scene and opened fire, no one knows why (sounds like an ambush?). Shooter has not been id'd; mid 20's white dude wearing ballcap, jeans and tactical boots (wtf).

The young officer had just started on the job and is the first Davis PD who died in the line of duty since 1959  Sad and senseless night.

DAVIS, Calif. (KCRA) —
After just a few weeks out of training, Officer Natalie Corona was shot and killed in the line of duty, Davis police said Thursday night.

Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said Corona was a rising star in the department.

“She was just an absolute star in the department and somebody that pretty much every department member really looked to as a close friend, a sister,” he said.

Corona was responding to a three-vehicle crash Thursday night in downtown Davis when she was shot. The suspect was later found dead due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Corona was 22 years old and is survived by her parents, Pytel said.

“I’ve heard her described by our officers (Thursday night) as our daughter and our friend, and just the sister that we all wanted,” he said. “This is just an absolutely devastating loss.”

Corona started in the Davis Police Department in 2016 as a community service officer.

"I can tell you that I haven't seen anyone work harder in a part-time capacity and be more motivated to be a police officer than Natalie," Pytel said.

Corona completed the police academy in July 2018 and was promoted to officer when she graduated.

She finished her field training program just before Christmas and “had been out on her own for just a couple of weeks.”

“Natalie was just full of life and full of energy and just an absolute pleasure to be around,” Pytel said. “She loved being around everybody in the department and she just worked like you can't believe.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement Friday regarding Corona's death that reads in part:

"We join all Californians in mourning the loss of this courageous officer and extend our deepest condolences to Officer Corona’s family, friends, and coworkers."

Flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of Corona.

That is terrible. So young and had so many years left to leave a positive impact on the department and citizens.

I'd assume a "domestic issue" (ex-boyfriend)

Glad to hear your kid is okay and there were not as many casualties as in other recent school attacks.

Guns are just a tool, you can kill people with anything.
This argument would not make it possible to restrict anything. Things are just things. People decide how to use things. And we only hold (rationally developed, etc) people responsible for actions.

So I'd ask you, are you prepared to accept the logical consequences of your line of argument? Or would you rather abandon / modify the argument for this issue? Or are contradictions / compartmentalized thinking not a problem for you?

My suspicion is that you favor the latter choice. In this way, you can take solace in the fact that you side with the majority. Which in a democracy, means you are right.

Nope, no real desire to discuss anything with you after that kind of opening. Same as last time, sorry r2473 :(

Listening to the press conference, it is tough to take. The guy rode up on a bicycle at the car accident scene and then was seen lurking in the shadows. He then shot the officer who is standing by the cars. After she went down he walked up and unloaded a magazine in her. He then reloaded and shot at the firefighters hitting one in the boot and hitting a student in her backpack thankfully a textbook stopped the bullet.

He lived in the house where they found him, he went home and his roommate said he was acting normal and he sat outside watching the police cars roll up. They have not released his name yet, zero word on motive. Sounds like a flat our cold blooded murder.

Strange. He had no prior run in with her? Was he just mad at “the cops” and took it out on a random victim?

Very sad and the massive crime epidemic in America will come to your doorstep
Another young lady was killed 2 days apart and a cop
It’s clear to me this maybe a product of hiring people not qualified for the job based on gender

The fact that cops are being assaulted and shot at with such frequency only further illustrates the total moral decay and breakdown of American society

It perhaps illustrates the thesis that a collection of individuals don't really constitute a society, and what doesn't exist cannot break down.

Blaming (liberal) Hollywood and the (liberal) media is a familiar trope.

When you demonize cops in Hollywood and the media and when you hire based on gender not merit things can go wrong
Horrible tragedy of epic proportions as most cops are good blue collar people and heroes

How is that clear to you, have proof that she was unfit for duty or hired 100% on gender?

Yeah everyday I see people have a strong instinct about scratch & win cards at convenience stores too

It is utterly terryfing to be a cop today and I would have loved to be a cop in a more sane nation and era
I guess I would be wearing a bulletproof vest and have my finger on the trigger for every stop but the stress would get to me

That's disgusting of you. You have no evidence she wasn't qualified. And I hate to break it to you, being a man isn't going to give you the magical power to stop a bullet.

Thanks

"Limbaugh", the left should have a blast with this one :)

“The Davis Police department has been hitting me with ultra sonic waves meant to keep dogs from barking. I notified the press, internal affairs, and even the FBI about it. I am highly sensitive to its affect (sic) on my inner ear. I did my best to appease them, but they have continued for years and I can’t live this way anymore.”

Some people actually have this, i saw this one woman who couldnt be around wifi. He sounds crazy though, looks it too

That's awful. I visit Davis regularly, and UC Davis will be one of the campuses I will surely apply for this fall or next year. Very sad for the family.

True but I feel certain jobs are better for certain Xs and Ys
Say that the next time you get stopped by a cop woman with a gun. There are women out there that are tough as nails. And male cops that could stand to lose a few pounds. Let's not go into hasty generalizations.

“Qualified “ is what we don’t know
She was a cop, so she had to be qualified. Maybe you think her department has lower standards for women? Well instead of bringing politics and speculation into a thread about a senseless murder, why don't you ask them? See how they react to that.
