No one deserves anything. The market has valued the worth of these athletes. That's all. What's all this about "deserving"? You are worth what you get.

How many sports pay the same to women and men ?

Which IMO is wrong since a much smaller crowd wants to see women tennis , and same happens on the TV. So, if they sell less, they deserve less money (if they play 5 or 3 sets means nothing, it is all on what you sell, or the rating).

Maria is not worth what she gets. Unless being tall and blonde makes you more worthy of endorsement deals than being successful and black...

SMG Insight, which tracks global TV viewership, notes the last two US Open women's finals had higher ratings than the men's finals. More notably, the worldwide audience for women's tennis rose 22 percent last year, faster than for men's tennis. And most importantly, ADVERTISERS note that since women's matches attract more women viewers, and since women have been shown to be the deciding vote in about 80 percent of household purchasing decisions, advertisers feel women's tennis has more economic value for them. In business it's seldom the total number of viewers that matters but the age and gender demographics.

Additionally, I've posted TV ratings chart in the past which illustrated that many women's USO finals had higher ratings than men's finals, but similar data is--as you point out--available for global numbers, so it is myth (motivated by base emotionalism of a certain kind) to suggest the women are not earning it. The biggest audience--the TV audience--proves that.

Are women any less of a person than men? Easy to say that as a guy I suppose.

Sorry who said that?

What I maintain is that players must be paid independently of sex but upon the money they generate. If women decide to play in bikini or something happens and people prefer to watch their matches more than men and stadiums get filled and TV rights are sold higher then they deserve more money than men.

Moreover if juniors or handicapped generated more money than men and women then they should get away with the bigger prizes.

As it is, they don't sell as much therefore they don't deserve same money. Which I guess is happening in the other sports which follow the law of the markets.

Sexism has nothing to do with it but economics.

Probably those numbers refer only to the US and not globally. Second they refer only to finals where I guess Serena was there compared to men where there are no top American players. Compare the full tournament and let me know. Use other Grand Slams than the US. There is a world out there.

Reality is way different. I go to tournaments and GSs where main stadiums put women and are empty until men arrive. I have lived in tennis countries where ESPN buys all MS1000 Tv rights for men and don't bother to buy or cast even the finals for women (same tournament ie Miami, IW). Davis Cup is on while Fed Cup is nowhere on the screen. I am at this moment watching Montreal on two channels of ESPN that cover my continent while Toronto is not shown at all in the 100 channels I have. Who buys those rights? Are you watching women now? I sincerely wish I could.

Granted, female tennis is not interesting these days, field is weak with a dominating player, not much mistery. Probably Seles Graf or Evert Martina provoked more attraction and sold more. I dont know.

The market should rule, nothing else. I am no sexist at all, if female tennis sold more than men I would be the first in saying they should get more then men.
