Advice on racquet / mods suggestion for Head Graphene Touch Prestige MP?

Long time reader, infrequent poster here... Looking for your sage advice on racquet modification...

I learned to play in the days of Edberg and Sampras, and that's my playing style. Unsurprisingly, my favorite stick awhile back had been Wilson PS 85. I find it a great hit when I'm "on." But at 50, I feel a little too old and slow for it these days.

I've played with Yonex DG97 330, which is nice overall -- solid returns and volleys, good precisions... But somehow I reliably get golfer's elbow after I play with it for a stretch.

More recently, I've played reasonably well with slightly weighted up Angell ASL2 and K7 Red. The ASL2 worked well in the beginning, but then I started trying slightly more modern style of hitting, maybe emulating Federer, and having a hard time with the ASL2. It seems to be quite string sensitive, and I feel like the ball kind of "slides off" whenever I hit anywhere toward the hoop.

The K7 Red "hooks" the ball much better for me. I immediately felt like I could "throw" the racquet forward and let the stick and strings do their thing. But not all is well – I find it is a little too muted / lacking in feedback, and sometimes erratic (very open string pattern). Particularly, whenever I try to do my classic down-the-line slice approach shot, or inside out forehand, or stick volley, for that matter. I tried several string setups in it, but nothing thicker than 16L gauge – is that the problem?

A few weeks ago I dug out an old POG 110, weighing ~360g and ~31.5 cm balance point. I have another one of these, but it's 20g lighter and more headlight! Anyhow, I played reasonably well with the heavier one. (Better than with the lighter one, even after adding some lead in the hoop on the latter – getting nothing on serve returns, can't hit deep.) I recently put HyperG Round 17G in the heavier POG – this improved its consistency, but after a few hours of play, I realized that I very much dislike the Prince grip shape, and I don't like it all that much on my backhand.

I came into possession of two reasonably well matched Head Graphene Touch Prestige MP sticks in great shape. I tried it with a few different strings - ZX / ProLine hybrid and now Zero and Sync. I do like the fairly plush and predictable feeling of this stick on impact, and I do like the Sync a bit more than Zero. It felt a bit underpowered, low-spin to me, so I've put some weight at 12 o'clock, lowered string tension (48/46 lbs). The grip shape on the HGTP-MP feels like classic Head, which feels great on my forehand, but makes it hard for me to locate the "face" of the racquet on the 1hbh; I've layered some tape to build up the broad bevels to make it feel a bit more like Wilson, which helped. It seems like the stick is light enough and consistent enough to tolerate some mods...

So, here's the question – without recommending to me to just buy a pair of modern Wilson ProStaffs (whose specs are going to be all over the place anyway), can you suggest some mods that I could make to the HGTP-MP? Anyone have luck weighing up and/or doing other mods to get the HGTP-MP working well for them?

Thanks in advance!

The stick with Restring Sync is 348 gr weight, 32.5 cm balance.
Some lead at 12 o'clock. Sampras dampener. Tournal grip.

The stick with Restring Zero is 341.5 gr weight, 33.5 cm balance.
Some lead at 12 o'clock + head tape. Sampras dampener. Just an overgrip over handle.

They both swing about similar to me.

I guess one obvious thing might be to remove the head tape and put an overgrip on the stick with Zero, get them back to the same spec and decide which string I like more?.. Previously I had them at about the same spec and balance, and I prefer the Sync. Then I tried putting a little more weight in the hoop to help with spin and power. But beyond that, what should I do, if what I'm looking for is something like a more forgiving PS85?..

(I've read many posts on the forum regarding MgR/I, and presumably for my 6' height I should be gelling with Fed specs, but maybe someone can simplify the "order of operations" for me in a practical way?..)

I've been looking for a more forgiving PS85 as well, and I think it's a fruitless exercise. Depending on how your favorite PS85s measure (mine vary wildly), you may want to try match to those specs, and maybe keep weight at the tip vs. at 3 and 9 (as you are already doing) to maintain the maneuverability you are used to with the smaller head.

I find that my favorite racquets seem to cluster around 31.5-32cm balance, 340-350g static, 325-330SW (all strung). Your own experience may differ, but just offering that as a fellow PS85 enthusiast.

One more specific challenge you may face in approximating the feel and performance will be the PS85's 16x18 vs. the Prestige's 18x20 string patterns.

Thx, @naturalexponent - I hear you on the string pattern and maneuverability. I was sort of hoping that poly strings would make up for the tightness... I do actually have a super-old Head Premier Tour that's 16x18, small head, maybe a little bit longer mains than PS85, and feels flexier than a wet noodle. It's not unlike the PS85 to play with, but not any easier. A long time ago I also tried Prince Phanton 93P (in both string patterns) – the feeling was nice, but didn't come through the air as nicely for me as the PS85, and also that Prince grip shape...

One "dark horse" stick is the Estusa Power Beam Pro - what used to be the Puma Boris Becker stick. I had one that was a newer version, and then got two fairly well matched sticks in the Classifieds here. They play like a *very slightly* more forgiving PS85. Interestingly, the two sticks I bought here have a "PWS" thingy at 3, 9, and 12 o'clock, whereas the one I had doesn't have any. Also, the stick I had originally – same paintjob, mind you – feels considerably firmer / crisper when striking the ball than those two.

Not sure what else you're looking for besides a little more power, but 1st thing I'd do is remove lead from 12 o'clock and put double the amount at either 3 and 9 or 2 and 10 (whichever is adjacent to where you're making contact with the ball most). So, if you had 5 gms at 12, put 5 grams at 2 and 5 grams at 10. Since you mentioned having a little elbow problem once, I'd go to a slightly thicker overgrip. It might initially decrease your spin, but since you grew up playing S&V, I doubt you'll notice much difference. May even help the volleys.
