Andy Murray may lose the final because of lack of sleep

It might not be the best preparation for taking on Novak Djokovic but Andy Murray made a late, late appearance at Melbourne Park to see his brother Jamie Murray win his first grand slam doubles title. The Scot, whose final against the world No1 starts on Sunday at 8.30am UK time, arrived in Jamie’s player box well after 1am local time, to see his brother and partner Bruno Soares collect their trophy after a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Canada’s Daniel Nestor and the Czech Radek Stepanek.

Andy: Great brother, but poor decision.

Fed fans may lose sleep because of crying after the match tonight.

Great night, butthurt fans.

What has Federer got to do with this thread ? Federer must have left Melbourne and probably in Switzerland now.

You are obnoxious and possessed with hate for Federer.

You're right Federer's got nothing to do with this thread, but his butthurt fans (not all Fed fans are butthurt) have. I don't hate Fed, but I hate nonsensical threads.

If you dont like the thread , stay civil and stay out. Don't pollute with your garbage in every thread that has nothing to do with Fed or his fans.

He had a 4 hour match the previous evening followed by media commitments.

He looks awful in that picture. They showed him on TV and he was visibly tired.

He looks like Andy Murray.

Besides, this is entirely his choice, no? Clearly he felt doing this wouldn't impact his performance in the final.

Ok. Andy Murray may lose but definitely not because of lack of sleep. 6-8 hours should suffice, so your claim is absolutely nonsensical.

Djokovic is going to hammer Muray. It is stunning that Murray did that before a grand slam final. He will say of course family comes first etc and he was a bit tired but Jamie deserved his support etc.

Djokovic is so far ahead of the rest, boredom is his biggest opponent right now. Murray has no chance now, he had little anyway but now he has none.

C'mon. Day before a major final doing an all nighter ?

Don't you mean an airbrushed Murray?

He's played late night matches well into the AM and managed to come back strong the very next day. He'll be fine.

I had read Andy Murray was really upset when Jamie had lost Wimbledon 2015 doubles final. Then Jamie again lost USO final.

Andy must have figured this was an important career turning point for Jamie and that is why he put Jamie before his preparation for the final.

Again, an awesome brother..But questionable choice.

this has got to be the most naive thread of the tourney.

do you honestly believe that a world-class athlete who makes his living playing tennis, who is supremely motivated to win another slam, playing against the juggernaut that is novak djokovic . . . do you really believe that player (and his coach/trainers/team) would not be ready to play in the final?

i mean, chances are he will lose. but it won't be for "lack of sleep".

Or Maybe, he will be so happy for his brother that he will play 10 X better than he normally does ??

This is majors, BO5 , completely different story than a BO3 . You cannot do it like the masters.

Do you think all major winners are staying awake till 2 AM the night before their final ? What are you talking ?

Players don't even go for late dinner the night before a major final.

I think it was Soares who tried to take Stepanek's head off midway thru that second set. Soares took a short ball at service line, and blasted a shot at the worms head. The worm ducking just in time, then glaring and yelling "come on" when the assassin's bullitt went long. Maybe someone can find it? Pretty funny. o_O

Andy must have figured: "Look I am gonna get hammered anyway, might as well root for brother Jamie. This moment may not come again."

;) hehe.

The way he is training I'd say injury and burnout are bigger threats than boredom. I think Fedr moderates his training in order to keep his body healthy, whereas Djokovic and earlier Nadal pulled out all stops and were willing to take the risk. That results in a higher level of play for short periods, but a shorter competitive lifespan in the long run.

Wow is that confectionery in that bowl ? I wonder why Nalbandian isn't there winning tournaments with bowls of pies, muffins and other stuff being handed around for free.

Good job they're not around to tempt Novak. One sniff of a bacon butty and they'd have to carry him off court on a stretcher!

Assuming he's in a good hotel and no-one from room service tries to bring him his breakfast too early, he can still have a decent sleep.

In theory, Andy could have gone to bed and ignored what was happening with his brother, but realistically, he'd have been distracted. He might as well be distracted by going there and sharing the moment with Jamie, then heading back to the hotel and off to bed.

Arguably, it's a good distraction, and could be just the motivation he needs to see him through tricky moments. Regardless, it's going to be a memory they can share in another twenty years time, and that's going to mean a lot.

Don't understand your logic. Its not like he has to get up at 8:00 am The match is at 7:30 pm. From 1:30 am until match time there are 18 hours !!! Anyways it's your opinion, anyone is entitled to one.

Yes you may be right as i thought the emotional look in Becker's face was interesting, it had the look of a man who felt these days may not happen too much longer so maybe Djokovics camp know something we dont? Becker has never been emotional publicly in his life.

I don't know what you imply by that.
The only thing i can think of is that Djokovic intends to quit in a short while. But i don't see that happening. I don;t think anything shorter than being the undisputed greatest could be fueling him to play at such a high level week after week (and train for that). Surely, he would not do all this just to win 14 slams. Joker is definitely here to stay for another few years till he has left 17 slams behind him and eclipsed every meaningful record of Fed.
