Andy Murray was on his way to becoming the GOAT before hip injury

He won 5 tournaments in a row at the end of 2016 including owning Djokovic at atp finals to have the most amazing YE #1 snatch of all time. Clearly he figured out tennis if he won so many tournaments in a row and crushing Djokovic. But then the hip injury struck. If not for that he would've gone on to become the greatest of all time

No that was in a weak year after Djokovic peak ended. Unlike davydenko who rose in the strong era during Federer, Nadal and delpotro prime.
He could have achieved more, probably reach atg status. But he would continue to be below the Big 3. But he would probably change the goat race and be a thorn for djokovic especially on grass.

Very stupid thread OP.

Murray is not even 20% of Djokovic as a player with or without injury.

Djoker is a very special player, thats why his body did not break down like other players, it is extreme stupidity to compare Murray to him because of some wins which Murray has over Djokovic.

On TTW … no way

I watched a heap of Murray that year, especially the second half where he just kept winning and winning. I did think he was playing some of, if not, his best tennis of his career. Still remember a couple of those clinics he put on, like against Pouille and Cilic in the indoor season. I thought he looked as comfortable and confident as I had ever seen him.

Murray should have tanked until 2016 and saves his hips for afterward. Imagine the trophy pile if you could teleport 21-year old Murray's hips to 2017.

In real life there is no tanking

The slower you are, the farther you end up from where you could have if you hadn't, thats life.

Djokovic was never slowing down/tanking, even in 2006 he said Nadal is quite beatable at RG.... even in 2007 when Fed was dominant Djokovic said Federer is going down soon.... that kind of belief and actions he had it even then.... he has been in it all along..... Looks like deep down at a subconscious level he might have felt that Fedal were mugs back in 06-07 itself....

True.

IMO he peak late mentally and that costed him a few majors earlier in his career. I think Murray would have won 10-13 slams if he would have stayed healthy.

Can't have a GOAT season without winning a slam sir.
He was about to go win all 4 grand slams the next year he figured out tennis and became a higher level than anyone ever. Thats why he destroyed Djokovic so easily

I never said he had a GOAT season I said he was on the path to becoming GOAT. Once again you have distorted the truth

Ohhh yes you can 5 legendary tournament wins in a row and crushing Djokovic at the very end to snatch YE #1 from a seemingly impossible position to do that proved his invincibility. Slams would be no problem after that

You're falling for his nonsense. Murray, of course, had already won a Slam that season but poster Holmes is trying to deny he won anything but the Olympics. ;)

So you admit that this is all it takes to snatch GOATdom from Fed? As a fan of his, I'm offended sir. That's offensive.

But what makes you think Fed had GOATdom to start with? You have to have won a Slam before you can qualify for that?

So a slamless Feddy was all it took to turn Murray into the Bozo of the slamless clown circus? If you're trying to get us to go pro-Murray sir, you aren't exactly convincing.

No no, Feddy was already the GOAT Bozo because he could never win a Slam. Couldn't even get to #1 no matter how hard he tried!

He was big 4 material, but his training put him at a high risk for injuries and here we are

Also, Murray was a mental midget and was in desperate need of a strong male figure in his life

Stan, too. With USO'16 he won his 11th final in a row. Then the knee problems began. First seen at AO, later at RG with the battle of the broken men against sir Andy. Both went into surgery after Wimbledon that year. Injuries are a part of the game and never happens at a convenient time.

The opening thread is absurd. It's an unverifiable proposition at it's most basic, and nothing about Murray ever suggested he was GOAT material.
The idea that winning 5 tournaments in a row is a prerequisite to becoming the GOAT is laughable.

And Murray ended up with a losing h2h against this caliber player? Sad.

I hope Djokovic wins at least 1 more Wimbledon.

Some of these people (like the OP) disrespect him a lot, it will be good to see Djokovic win more just to put these people in their place.

Dont read but at least dont troll.

Lol @ figured out Tennis... I am still chuckling at Murray figuring out Tennis when Federer himself failed to figure out Nadal for more than a decade.

Murray should be on 0 slams but he even has 3 slams because in all those 3 slams Fedal were out of touch/injured/both, in 2016 itself Murray won loads of tournaments with Big 3 being out and you think he figured it out ? You troll a lot, but always remember 24>20.

Murray's hip surgery was around January-February 2019, so some time after his loss of form. Murray's whole message during the 2019 Australian Open was a bit of a mess, and a lot of people thought he was retiring right there. Remember the video tribute after he lost to Bautista-Agut?
