Andy Murray's new coach....you won't believe it

Murray is fit and has all the shots, so I don't see Lendl improving him on a technical level. But as an advisor, as somebody who has overcome pressure to eventually win slams himself, mentally he could really give Andy some excellent counsel.

I imagine Ivan looked at Andy's game and could see too much wasted energy, and thought there was genuinely something there he could work with/improve.

Whichever way you look at it, it's a positive notion anyway.

I see Lendl's role as being more of an advisor on tactics and mental preparation. Still, if he can get Andy's average 1st serve percentage up a bit and put some more kick into his 2nd serve, that certainly wouldn't come amiss! :)

Why are there 2 threads on this topic?

This thread came after the other one, so lets kill one of them - this one!

Pete in his book says Pete Fisher was an amazing coach even though he couldnt play the game because he was such a good reader of the game.

LOL. Sampras never said that anywhere in his book, or even implied that. In fact, Sampras says the opposite.

Sampras actually says - and I quote - "Fisher had one of the most horrific tennis games anyone had ever laid eyes on"

....."[Fisher] was a hacker tennis player".........

"coach was not right word for Fisher."......."he was more like a mad scientiest, general contractor."

He adds that what Fisher was good at doing was finding other coaches to actually provide the coaching to Sampras eg. Robert Lansdorp for groundstrokes etc.

Everybody knows Andy needs to add some killer instinct...there's no better person than Ivan "The Terminator" to teach him.

Lendl becoming Murray's coach is my favorite tennis event since Nadal became the first man in tennis history to win slams on clay, grass, hardcourt in a calendar year. And I was never even a Lendl fan!

Hey Tom - all the best for the New Year tonight.

Can you see Murray pulling his scream at the box crybaby crap with Lendl there? I can't, nor can I believe Lendl took the job without having had that conversation. This can only be a good thing.

Right back at you, my friend!

Re: future antics...sell low bcoz I'm sure the first episode will be the last. Unless Ivan's portfolio crashes, he won't need to deal with the histrionics and he'll quietly retire back to his life of leisure along Florida's Atlantic Coast near Vero Beach where I see him every April at the Futures tourney I service. A round of golf daily will be more appealing than coaxing a major or two out of Andy if there's excess baggage.

Andy has announced Ivan Lendl as his new full time coach, with the eight time Grand Slam winner set to take up his duties with immediate affect.

“It was important to me that any new person joining my team was able to add fresh insight,” said Andy. “Ivan’s impact on the game is unquestionable and he brings experience and knowledge that few others have, particularly in major tournaments. I look forward to working with him going forward.”

A 19 time Major Singles finalist who clocked up 270 consecutive weeks at No. 1, Lendl today welcomed working with Andy:
“I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Andy. He is a unique talent and I look forward to trying to help him reach his goals

Ivan Lendl also lost his first 4 slam finals, but went onto win
2 x Australian Opens
3 x French Open
3 x US Open ** Edit

I'd say this is HUGE news. Very good news. Just the sorta guy Murray needs to win a slam.

Andy on fb:

GS Champions have a perspective and experiences which are totally unique. As far as Lendl is concerned, I've heard things which he has said to other players and medical practitioners whom I know that I have never heard from any other tennis professional, and what he said was incredibly insightful. There is knowledge which GS Champions can pass along that no others can. Lendl may say just one thing in-passing over dinner, which then becomes Murray's key to the GS Kingdom. There is more to winning than just emotional perspective, tactics, fitness, and technique.

You must be very confident that Lendl's shoddy coaching will make Murray even easier for Nadal to beat.

I never thought of it that way. I don't know what Lendl will do to Murray's game, positive or negative. Just good to have a big name in the coaching ranks. Lendl, was one of those I hoped would coach. Agassi and Sampras are the others. Agassi especially (although I also think Agassi would be the best commentator in the world).
