Anyone else annoyed that there's no Tennis during the first Sunday?

Of Wimbledon that is.

It just seems like it's the worse Tournament to take off the first sunday, with the torrential downpour an extra day might help out of with the scheduling problems.

Ditto that.

I mean, first they make everyone dress like hospital orderlies. Not viewer-friendly at all. (I always wonder what the women are supposed to do if it's that time of the month. Geez, I wouldn't be able to concentrate at all wearing white on international TV.)

And then they blow off the middle Sunday, which is one of my favorite days to kick back and watch the other majors. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I hereby motion that Wimbledon be canceled, retroactively from 1800 onwards, on the grounds that it is 'the worst tournament out there'. A stronger indictment cannot possibly be found!

As a result, Sampras and Fed will have to give up their beloved grass court triumphs, thus taking care of the misconception that they are any good. While we're at it, why not convert every other tournament to clay, the 'one true surface'.

simple... if you don't like it, don't watch it.
its all about the tradition... get it?

Except that the problem is we all *want* to watch it.

In the past 30 years the All England Club has moved the starting time of the finals to accommodate American TV, they've changed to yellow balls, they allow sleeveless shirts, and they're putting a roof onto center court. Not all traditions deserve to continue.

How about they play on the middle Sunday and you can continue their outdated tradition by "not watching."

I don't really agree with the "tradition" arguments. Is not playing on the middle Sunday really what makes gives Wimbledon its stature?

Wimbledon felt just as traditional and prestigious in 2004 when play was held on the middle Sunday.

They've changed the surface, so the traditional form of play has been affected.

They're in the process of changing one of the most recognized courts in tennis to put on a roof.

They've upped prize money for women.

I don't think clinging to the "no middle Sunday" prohibition on play is going to ruin tradition, and would make sense considering the climate in England and the simple fact that many fans would appreciate it.

Fine, if the tournament schedule is not behind, or only slightly behind come the first Sunday, AND, the forecast looks good for the rest of the week, then don't play.

But, this year was a joke. Seriously behind by the first Sunday, AND the forecast was for consistent rain, at least early in the week.

I'm not looking to ruin "tradition," but I think Wimbledon tradition will be fine with middle Sunday play.

Hello everyone.

Did anyone ever happen to think it is not Wimbledon, but perhaps the players that don't want to play on that Sunday. After all, Sunday is considered a day of rest and perhaps they would rather spend their time at church. Amen.

Had the idiots kept the ****ing traditional surface all matches would have been finished in time.

If the ATP players were that overtly religious and wanted to spend time at church on Sunday, which is certainly comendable, wouldn't there be a movement to have Sunday play banned year round? Why would they seek Sundays off to go to church during Wimbledon but not the other majors?

Sunday is, historically, considered a day of rest, but I'm sure you've noticed that stores are now open, people work, and tennis is played on Sunday. Yes, many people still go to church on Sunday, but, again, if that's the reason why you think tennis players may not want to play, wouldn't all Sundays have no play?

Hhhaha, yeah, it's a rule they could get a way with in a different climate. Plus, half the tour players are Catholic. They could just squeeze a quick mass in on either Saturday night or Sunday early.....to fit the tournament's 'shedjule'.

They don't have to play the middle Sunday, but they should be ready to use it when it is needed. Especially if tennis was rained out on Saturday. There is no logic in pushing 3rd round matches that need to be completed to where 4th round matches should be taking place (Monday).

I'm for keeping tradition, and they can have their tradition if weather permits. But now they have a huge mess on their hands and can look back to Sunday when they could of avoided a lot of this.

I don't know for whose benefit the rest day is for. The players sit around doing nothing. I'm sure television and paying fans would prefer tennis. It's not religious because the mens final is on a Sunday. The only argument appears to be tradition. We used to stone people in the old days but traditions can change.

Yeah, Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, from WORK. Wouldn't a day of watching tennis be the perfect leisure activity for the working man (which is pretty much everybody regardless of income)? Why not give that to them?

Traditions can get stale, representing stodginess and a refusal to progress. This tradition should go. Now Rafa and guys in bottom half have to play every day til Sunday.

As should Kate Smith singing God Bless America in the 7th inning of Yankee games. When that comes on, all it means to me is go to the bathroom and get another beer, isn't that totally defeating the point of a patriotic moment? Can we mix it up for those of us under 70? There are different songs, different singers. Sorry went off on a tangent there.
