Anyone else finding that most tennis shoes run big? Or is it just me?

I'm having a horrible time trying to find a good quality pair of tennis shoes that fit me well.

I wear a 9 in everything (non-tennis): pair of skechers, older pair of running new balance, current pair of casual nike sneakers, dress shoes, older pair of kswiss shoes. Virtually /everything/ is just right for me in a 9, as long as it's wide enough (I have a wide toebox, contributing to my trouble finding comfortable shoes).

Recently, at the recommendation of a podiatrist, I began a search for a high quality pair of tennis shoes. I started with New Balance CT1004 in 9/4E. Width was fine, but length was too long. I exchanged for 8.5 and /still/ too big! What the heck? NB have /always/ fit me in 9 in the past.

I tried a pair of older prince (T22s) in 9 and they seemed okay, but then I tried the OV-1 in 9 wide and again: width okay, but too long.

Why does it seem that all the newer shoes I order form TW are always running big?

Are newer model tennis shoes just running big these days or something? Are "wide" shoes also made "longer" for some odd reason?

Anyone else having this issue?

I want to try out a few more pairs but sending them back all the time is getting really annoying. And now I can't even figure out what size to order!

I used to swear it was always 9. Now I'm not so sure. This is frustrating!

Each model of shoe is built upon it's own last for the most part. You can't compare the fit of a shoe from a company to any other shoe from that company unless you know for sure that they are made from the same last (shoe mold). Honestly, IMO it's not a good idea to buy untried shoe models (sorry TW) from the internet if you can help it unless you have the time to wait for shipping and "retries" are free. All you can really do is use size 9 as a base reference to start out with.

I wear NB size 9, 4E. I've tried several models and they all seem to be the correct size. Have you ever had your foot measured?

I have actually. I went to a podiatrist who said my right is an 8.5 and my left is a 9, so I had better get the 9s. He also said I should go with wide, either 2E or 4E.

I tried the NB CT1004 in 9/4E, but they felt too long. The podiatrist confirmed this and said, "yeah, you're right; these in particular are too long for you. Give the 8.5s a try."

I returned the 9s for 8.5 4E, but felt that they were STILL too big (they honestly seemed like they were exactly the same as the 9s). I also noticed that the NB tend to be wide everywhere and not only in the toebox (which is what I need).

I'm honestly going crazy. I've tried so many pairs. I'd be willing to go with something less wide, but in my right foot, it seriously feels like the bones in my foot like "bump" together or something if the toebox is too narrow (which, apparently, almost every tennis shoe on the planet is, for me anyway).

If anyone has any specific recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

I find length isn't consistent from brand to brand, and sometimes not even in different models from the same maker. That's the only downside of buying my shoes from tenniswarehouse, though they are really cool about the returns. They have a lot more selection than local shops, especially of brands I like, such as Yonex and Asics.

I wear 12 in K-swiss ultranaturals, 11-1/2 in Yonex 304Rex, and 11-1/2 in Asics Gel-Game but 12s in Asics Gel Resolutions. In my experience the first three shoes are almost exactly the same length.

Another thing to consider is the different feel of tennis shoes. Tennis shoes are made for lateral movement and are tennis specific. So what you might be feeling and confused about is the different feel of tennis shoes as apposed to other shoes. I say stick with 9's and get out on the tennis courts and get used to them.

My regular sneakers are 9's and my Barricade V in the same size is giving me bruised toe. I am now wearing a size 10 Asics. I'd at least order 1/2 size to a full size bigger for my future tennis shoes.

I know what you're feeling.
I normally wear 8.5 running shoes but, when I got my first pair of Barricade V's at 8.5, it was a bit big (too long); I probably would have needed 8's. Same when I go bowling, for some reason, 8.5 bowling shoes are always too big, I always ask for 8's.
