Anyone else sick of long shorts?

I've had trouble finding anything with less than a 9" or 7" inseam. 9" is on my knee and 7 just above it. At 5'10" with shorter legs, the shorts today are like wearing virtual pants. Not really into that.

Plus Mary Jo Fernandez made a push during the rain delay to bring back shorty shorts! Ha I don't need to go Borg short, but some choices would be nice.

Yeah, I'm pretty sick of them. Most guys these days look like they're wearing pajamas out on the courts. :-(

You sure can tell guys that wore the short shorts. My kids and their friends always laugh at some of my tennis pictures from the 70's - he but I did have sexy legs!!!

Personally, I feel that shorts just above the knee are fine, any longer and I won't wear it. (I'm kinda tall so 7-9" is perfect)

I like longer shorts. I wear 7-9 inches. I only don't like it when you see some of the 11-13" inseems from basketball making their way on to the court. But even than it is not a big deal to me, just something I wouldn't wear. I saw a guy wearing 4-5" inseems the other day and he looked really out of place. :-D

For physical activity I like having my shorts above the knee. This way no fabric clings onto your knee as you move.

i think it depends on how tall you are. suppose you're 5 feet 5, a 9-inch inseam shorts would look a little bit too long, at least to my eyes anyway. on the other hand, a 4.5-inch inseam shorts would look alright on that person.

I wear old school 70s shorts all the time. Anything longer than 7" is terrible.

It just looks better aesthetically to me. Longer looking legs look good. Why would someone want to make their legs look shorter?

I guess for the same inexplicable reason that some people wear jeans that make their butts look like they fall below their knees. ;) LOL

Can remember when local tennis clubs banned jams. Now, that's the only length sold at the same clubs.

I have difficulty in finding shorts as well. Being about 166cm tall (oh well, even Justin Henin is a bit taller than me), even 7" inseam shorts almost reach my knees if I don't pull them up to my waist intentionally.

i dont' mind long shorts that much, but i do mind when the shorts are like nadals. those are so ugly and out of place. but then again, short shorts are also out of place. something right above the knee is wat i prefer

really? i am abt the same height (5'5 to be exact) and i wear the medium nike 7' shorts and they are just abt an inch and half above my knee cap.. similar to the length that Federer has his. with no problems. i pull them up just around the belly button.. and fits fine.. but this is the longest i will go..
may be u can try non-tennis shorts.. like may be soccer shorts or something.

Be patience. Fashon goes fast. I am sure for 2 years all players will wear Borg-like shorts, or something like cycling shorts...

as a early teen i like shorts that just cover my knee when i stand, so i were a large instead of a medium but not any longer than that

Humm... actually my legs are not quite proportional. If they were, I'd have been about 170-172cm. That's why I have difficulty in finding right shorts.

Actually I just bought a pair of Agassi shorts from TW but didn't quite like it. I like my old 7" ClimaCool Adidas which are meshy and elastic, and most important, keep my thighs cool.

This is exactly why I'm sick of them. It's not just that they look like pajamas, but the long shorts are hot and stick to your legs. Would rather have more freedom of movement.

well TW has some 5" nikes for you!

i dont like it when people wear basketball shorts to play in. my shorts all reast above the knee or a little higher. ive found that adidas fits pretty well. fila did too but they died.

I wont wear shorts that go below my knees. My shorts range from going 5-15 cm above my knees. I really think that the longer shorts look stupid. :p

BTW, I´m 17.

I like longer shorts too. Usually about right at the knee or halfway over the knee. Anyone know what the inseam would be for that length for about a 6' 1" person, pretty proportional.

I do prefer the shorter shorts, I have an old pair of Adidas shorts and they may be 5" inseam because they're pretty short. I love them though

Fashion has its cycles. We will all soon revert to the spandex shorts under our 5' tennis shorts ala Agassi.

On the note of Agassi, he reverted back to nromal sized shorts when he converted to Addidas. Looked more classier. Of all the culprits out there with baggy shorts, I think Safin wins followed by Nadal.

My favorite tennis shorts are the Nike 11" conquer "shorts." (those are pre-emptive quotation marks) However, I'm 6'4", and these come about halfway down my kneecap, and that's wearing the waistline at its natural (i.e. not halfway down my arse) position. I can swing the 9" inseams, but cannot go shorter than that, for fear of my bits and pieces coming through the bottom of the shorts! As a tall man, I actually appreciate something besides the 7" inseams that many of the good-looking shorts come in.

With that being said, I think the 15" board shorts for the new season are ridiculous, as were the 13" shorts from last year. Unless, of course, we have a whole bunch of >7' players coming down the pike! ;-)

I see inseams of 5", 7", 9" and above on TW, so I'm not sure what the problem is. It looks like folks of pretty much any height can find something they like.

$0.02 lighter,
Kevin

On a side note, what's the deal with Adidas short sizing? I automatically buy an XL in all shorts, and have never had to exchange any other shorts due to sizing. I bought a pair of the lead gray 9" competition shorts (the ones that were worn during Aus Open/SAP Open timeframe) in XL, and the things were huuuuuge! I went down to a large, and they were still huge! Everyone is sold out of medium, so I tried a small just for laughs. Those are on their way back to Adidas as we speak. The large size is too large in the waist for me, even with the string tightened all the way. If I play with a couple of balls in my pocket, I can feel the shorts twisting and turning as I swing the racquet.

Short shorts are horrible and a thing of the past. If you like them, then thats great for you but longer shorts have prevailed and that should be accepted by now.

Ditto. Speed is part of my game - the real long ones don't help...

But I do buy some of the long ones and wear them around town. I like the dark blue ones with the gold inserts that Rafa wore a year or two ago...

I never think 'nutters' are coming back - but something a little shorter will. At least something to show off a little of our upper leg muscles.

I have gone almost 100% to vintage Fila and Tacchini clothing on the courts, and I LOVE it!! ;)

I must admit to wearing 'bike shorts' underneath the EXTRA short Filas, but some of the Tacchinis from 'back in the day' are sort of medium length.

BTW, I am 6'2" so they are REALLY short on me.

Craig, where did you find that stuff? TW seems to sell the modern Fila/ST stuff.

Some people might think Buddhist-influenced art is "horrible and a thing of the past," too. They might hope you'd "accept that by now."

(I'm not saying that; but I'd imagine some folks might....)

First of all, I totally agree with the crazy sizing of Adidas clothing. It's kind of ironic that with a size 15 shoe they don't even make a shoe big enough for me, yet their clothes are enormous. Even nike clothing can be a little large sometime.

On the main topic of our discussion, I agree with many before me. Because I am 6'2", a 7-9" inseam is just right for me. But once the shorts get so long that they are hindering your movement, that is too long. And with short shorts, that would look really awkward on me because I have long legs. So basically, I am satisfied with the current length.

On the other hand, the fabric does feel sticky and hot with alot of these shorts, so I think something should be done about that. Dare I mention cotton? I think a lot of companies have switched to the poly/rayon/etc because they are a lot more colorful, but I think they just make the shorts feel hot.

Really? I find the exact opposite. I find the poly shorts feel really lightweight and cool while cotton shorts get hot and stick to you when you sweat and stay wet for a long time. I haven't worn cotton shorts for tennis in many years and I have no plans to return to them anytime soon.

Yeah Cotton is comfortable, but not when it gets all sweaty and muggy. I think cotton sticks more to the body than poly, and it doesnt dry quickly. While the poly shorts that we have today feel great, same with the poly shirts. Cotton just absorbs moisture but doesn't allow it air out. It kind of reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where George suggests cotton uniforms, and they end up shrinking and the players perform horribly.

I can attest personally that Nike's 5" shorts are worthless. The quality is low.

If you want an old school, get on the auction site and put it together. I recommend modern footwear however. I used to play in Diadora Borgs but it just doesn't work.

Let's face it, the cuts of the old clothes were better, and this is coming from a guy who was born the year Bjorn Borg won his last Wimbledon title.

Having never really worn cotton shorts, I was just speculating. Sounds like they are worse than the current situation, so never mind with that!

Anyone have the long shorts pull across your thigh? Volleyball shorts may be the best length.

Yeah good point made. Actually one thing I really like about tennis is that it doesnt matter what you wear, your age, racquet, etc. Once you step on the court its all about how you play. I know a 60 year old guy that hits with Kmart racquets that could own anyone less than 5.0 level. He always wears an old beat up red beanie that makes him look homeless. Personally I dont care if the guy Im playing is wearing pajamas and a rainbow afro wig if he can hit the ball well.

They probably went longer with these shorts over time, cause you know, sports like basketball are more appealing to the younger crowd, and you'd probably see more of them buying it.

If you guys really want short shorts, go to Yonex badminton clothing. They go down to somewhere between your crotch and your knees.
