Appealing down a computer ranking

I know a guy who rated 4.0 last year and proceeded to lose all of his matches, mostly by large margins. He lost three singles matches 6-2,6-2; 6-1,6-0; 6-1,4-6,1-0. Two doubles matches 6-1, 6-2 and 7-6, 6-1.

We want him to appeal down so he can play on our 3.5 team. Is that realistic?

^ was he a computer rated 4.0? or did he self rate? if he was computer rated how long has he been a 4.0?

-- 2 of the losses were very competitive
-- only 1 of the losses was a blowout
-- winning 4 games and 3 games total in a match might look bad but it's actually competitive
-- a top rated 4.0 player is expected to beat the lowest rated 4.0 player 6-0, 6-0

i doubt he'll win an appeal to be bumped down. he needs to lose more convincingly. :)

He self-rated 4.0 last year, performed poorly, and now has a "C" rating.

So those results you posted generated the C rating? No way he will win an appeal except for medical reasons or the like. Some of those matches were competitive. Remember that dynamic rating is not about winning and loosing. It is the computer comparing a result to what it expects. If some of the matches were against decent 4.0 competition the computer would expect lopsided losses and still keep his dynamic rating into 4.0 category.

Basically without know the real time rating of his opponents there is no way to really tell for sure, but I would say on the surface of things he would loose an appeal. And obviously big brother doesn't want us to know our or our opponent's dynamic rating!

Thanks. Looking at it more closely, the guy he took a set off went 4-4 mostly at #1 singles last season, and the guy he took 4 games from went 9-0 at #1 singles, losing only one set all year.

This seems highly unlikely.

Not likely. The only appeal he has is the automatic appeal on the Tennislink site. It'll be granted if his actual dynamic rating is within some tolerance over the minimum rating for the level (I think 0.1 or lower than 3.60). You might as well try, but if Tennislink says no, then he's stuck.
