Are Idiot players like Krygios good or bad for the sport?

Pro: Tennis is, let's face it, boring. Only reason I watch is Federer or a good final. I noticed when I heard about it, I looked up everything, from the comment, to Wawrinka's response, to Ryan Harrison and what he said. It's sad, but controversy sells. Doe anyone ever really listen to press conference of Fed, Rafa, Novak or Murray? You know exactly what they are going to say, it's scripted, "well he played good, I feel confident at this point, it could have gone the other way", same thing, every time. However listening to Krygios and some others is interesting, like Roddick's interviews.

Con: Tennis has cleaned so much, that it doesn't need bad role models. If I were Wawrinka I would have knocked Krygios out and just took the fine, what he said was disgusting. Tennis can be interesting without outright scandalous trash talk, watching some arrogant kids spewing out low grade trash. I think the perfect medium would be if the pro's got off their script, not be rude, but HONEST, "Look I'm playing so great right now no way Murray stands a chance", it's honest, interesting, and let's be honest, once Fed is gone Tennis will lose a HUGE audience.

It will be a refreshing renaissance after the dark ages of predominately mid to old middle age balding men tennis marketing.
And yes "grandpa" may not watch tennis anymore!

Tennis is in dire need of a bunch of "Young Turks" replacing the old and grey politically correct nicety nice folks.

Krygios is NOT idiot. The younger generation of players are not mature, tennis skills or personality. He's only 20, there will be much uncertainties of his future. If he continues, that's too bad.In generally, some eccentric young guys give something new to this sport,as long as they do not cross the line.

Short answer is ...people like kyrgios are bad for tennis.
ATP might just suspend him for 3 years...he will come back after that be bad again.
Federer commented on kyrgios and indicated he is not good for sport.

I don't even know what cross the line means anymore. It's been a long shot since I heard anyone use that.

If it tolerated Hewitt's unforgivable behavior, it can tolerate Krygios.

Uhm, there are 2 things to understand here.

1. What Nick did was not something anyone with some decent amount of commons sense would do on any given day, place, or time.
2. Disgusting attitude and behavior is something this world doesn't need, not just tennis.

You can be an on-court a-hole like Johny Mac or A-Rod, but still be likeable. You cannot be a disgusting scumbag on and off the court and expect people to accept you.

Of course, there's always the possibility that, however confident a player may be feeling towards an opponent, he doesn't want to say it loud for fear of jinxing himself! Never underestimate the power of this basic superstition! ;)

It will probably be bad for tennis fans (I mean real tennis fans, not like you it seems who only likes Federer, I certainly don't find tennis boring I'd say it's far less likely to have boring matches than say football, which can be great but there are many boring matches as well). While it might be good for non-tennis fans casual fans because it'll be a talking point. But people bored by tennis aren't going to watch a guy who behaves badly occasionally like Krygios they might read about it in the news or watch a story, but people who hate tennis won't suddenly fall in love with it because of him.

Having said that I think he'll probably mature a bit in time and his behaviour will improve. He seems a bit of a prat to be honest but I think it's mostly immaturity that's the cause.

Based on while hitting at the park the other day I overheard multiple (krygios converstaions) which is the first time I have heard anyone talk about professional Tennis (not during a Slam) seems like most of the tennis fans I play with tend to only watch the slams ...and I admit myself I only watch Slam matches and will go to youtube highlights later for all other tournaments.

Meanwhile, in La Ligua (spanish top division football, aka soccer):

Defender Gerard Pique could miss up to 12 games of Barcelona's league title defence after being sent off in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup. The former Manchester United man took aim at the assistant referee, screaming "I s*** on your w**** of a mother" in his face as he raged over the decision before being pulled away by teammates.

There's a gigantic gossip industry that probably would have told us the Vekic back story eventually.

What he did was very wrong, but hardly deserving of a hefty suspension.

As much as it frustrates me to say, he's probably good for the game. Today's society is all about controversy and public drama. People respecting each other just doesn't sell.

Kyrgios is good for the sport. Who are you more likely to watch: Kyrgios vs Simon, or Querrey vs Simon? That's not to say that behaviour like that of Kyrgios shouldn't be subject to disciplinary action, just that sport feeds off controversy. Kyrgios provides controversy.

I've confirmed with headquarters:
That is indeed what an idiot looks like.

When you encounter an idiot in its natural habitat he may exhibit the following:
1. Hair color: High level idiots will purposely color hair to show ranking among other idiot species. More colors on the generally indicates the higher ranking idiots.
2. Mastication on clothing and accessories: Idiots will be observed to chew on themselves or other objects. It is theorized that this is a parafunctional habit and that the idiot is not actually attempting to digest the item.
3. Black Chiclet - The Black Chiclet allows idiots to communicate. Often worn on the left earlobe, the Black Chiclet allows the idiot's thoughts to pass directly from the brain to the mouth without consideration or other interference. This allows the idiot to discharge what has been termed 'idiot speak'.

Of course it's good for the sport. Do you see how many threads were created because of Kyrgios and the stories that followed after? Everyone here may like to think that he's the devil incarnate, but they fail to realize that they have now become thoroughly invested in the Kyrgios storyline. This episode generated interest in matches with Isner-Kyrgios, Gasquet-Kyrgios, Kokkinakis-Harrison and Kokkinakis-Fognini that otherwise would not have existed. People now are tuning in to tennis to see what Kyrgios will do - they are now firmly engaged, whether to cheer him on to win and break this culture of elitism, or to boo him and cheer for his failure for the good of mankind.

Apart from Wawrinka's manly pride, this was a minor incident with no casualties or any concerning or lasting damage given Vekic's most recent comments, and for a brief period of time, has tennis trending on par with baseball at the height of the MLB season. Nothing at all wrong with that.

In the past, big personalities like Nasty and Mac have been good for tennis. Likely this is still going to be the case, but it's an empirical question and will take years to evaluate.

Good for the sport. We do need more characters like Mac, Connors, Nastase. But Nick needs to get to top 3 and remain as arrogant/cocky.

Unfortunately, in this incident he did drag a lady into this mess. I would have loved it, if this was as big a controversy, but without a lady or any other 3rd person involved. Just Nick and Stan fighting it out :) ..

I think Federer has proven that you don't need to be a redneck moron to be entertaining and to draw big crowds. Nick could have been a player that represents a new different breed of player if he stood for something other than "I am an egotistical moron" but that is his current level of maturity. I don't really care if he has sex before or even during his matches, nor do I want him to annouce his friends or enemies sexual habits to get an advantage during a tennis match. I also prefer that he maybe control his emotions a little.

So, at this point, I vote NO he isn't good for the sport of tennis.

Bad in a way that it ruins the "sport for gentlemen" image that the sport has built for a long time
Good in a way that more people will start to watch to see what's going on

Great answer. It's fun watching Mac go crazy, or Conners getting in his face, but to say at the net "________BANGED your girlfriend last night, sorry mate", man telling you most guys, I bet Stan if he heard him would have lost it and hurt him.

Controversy IS entertaining, let's just be honest. As I said I was intrigued, even watched Ryan Harrison yelling at what's his name. It's like a shark attack, we hate that it happened but can't resist watching, and to say someone's a punk like they did with Krygios before, heh no big deal, doesn't bother me, but saying that? I'd pay extra to see Krygios say that to Murray, I understand Murray can actually fight!

Yup, Nadal and Federer do not sell. They just placed Tennis in a level not seen before as far as I can see. ......

They sell on their talents. Be honest if you heard of a Fed Scrub up you would look for it in a second. "Rafa-Fed trade punches", there's not one person on this forum who wouldn't be interested.

That's hilarious! Yea I see an article on Google "Fed loses it at Australian Open, what the Tennis world is talking about", you think he threw down or something, instead it's a press conference where he says "Yea I played great today", OOOOH, how arrogant, terrible.

Controversy is fine, but you don't get personal, telling you I would have lost it and broke his nose.

Justified. That lineswoman was clearly picking on Serena, and we all know why.
Wrong. The lineswoman was just doing her job.

And even if your theory was correct, Serena should have never threat another person's life by swearing that she will shove the ball down the lineswoman's throat.

Sure. I totally agree with you. But this "level not seen before" has now become the new popularity benchmark. And the Djoker-Murray rivalry, combined with the rather extreme(imo) lack of new talents coming up, isn't exactly going to keep the popularity of tennis on this "level not seen before" for a very long time after Fedal retires. The way I see it, the popularity of tennis is vastly depandant on Fedal. Once they're gone, professional tennis will probably lose at least 50% of their income over time. This is where I think the Kyrgios-personalities could have a positive effect.

Just my opinion though..
