As a Nadal fan I'm delighted Djokovic is finally getting the respect he deserves

I keep hearing this narrative, "Novak gets no respect". Really? From whom and how is this measured? No metrics are ever cited. Sponsorship dollars? Internet followers? Prize money? Youtube likes? Youtube dislikes? Spectators reaction to Novak at Tournaments? Novak's reaction to spectators at tournaments? Ratings when he plays? Ratings when he doesn't play?

It's an artificial narrative that the media have hyped up, based on nothing other than subjective opinions. He's the #1 player, tied with Rafa and Roger with 20 major titles. He is currently dominating the game. Other than those two, he is the only current player who is a household name. He is getting plenty of respect.

Funny though, I think the Novak camp feeds on this false narrative, gives Novak a chip, and he plays best with a chip. Even though it's a contruct, it's working for them.

Federer quitting Roland-Garros will also have lost him a lot of respect from serious athletes, who are prepared to fight to the end: win, lose or draw.
Agree, I don't respect the trend of players picking and choosing tournaments. Fed kind of pioneered it. Yes, I know historically it's always been a consideration--players scheduling, which tournaments to play--but Fed really put it in the limelight when he started skipping RG--basically abandoning clay as a surface. To compound the issue, he still won majors after skipping RG, so for him it paid off, and lots of hype was made about how brilliant the strategy was. Suddenly, everyone was (and has been) talking about prolonging careers. Never heard that before in tennis. In most every major pro sport you have a schedule and you play the games. You don't choose which games you should skip to save yourself for the playoffs.

They should institute a rule where choosing not to play a slam -without a documented injury -means you automatically miss the next slam.

It was shocking to witness. A top player and former slam champ like Federer withdrawing from a major to play a minor grass tournament.

For a start.

A bit of self-awareness won't hurt you. LOL.

You have no understanding of nuance or the film represented by the avatar or how its principles apply to my behavior this forum. You're like a child, you simply see a clown photo.

I'm more of a Murray fan, long story why. I think I liked Andy because of the Dunblane massacre which I remember in 1996, it was one of the most horrifying things to happen in modern Britain so there's an emotional fandom there.

But I'm happy to see Djokovic becoming the greatest player of the open era, he is a phenom and how many more slams will he win? I think 3 or 4.

Good idea. Even then, you'd have issues around the injury exception. Like MTOs, bogus injuries backed up by bogus doctors diagnoses etc. So a player enter the major, plays a round or two, then suddenly goes down to an injury, fully documented by the team doctor. Tanking could also become an issue, but I think most players are far less likely to try that out of honor.

Opens another can of worms, but I think overall making that rule (oe something similar which heavily penalizes players) would be a strong disincentive for players to skip.

He's even more disliked in New York
US + UK < 5% of world population
You can add all western countries, where Djokovic is third wheel, and that’s still < 15%.
So, who cares if he is disliked by the most of 15% of population? Maybe that matters in Hollywood movies, where is important to deal with bad people from the east, but, who cares about it, in real life?

Anyone who stops being a fan of Federer if/when he is surpassed as GOAT was not a true fan of tennis in the first place.

And he wasn't a true fan of Fed.

Fed has many fake fans.

Novak's are real - standing behind him over a decade
while he was called "a third wheel",
and had less slams than Fedal,
and the whole western media propaganda and prejudices were against him.

You persevered, and now you reap the sweet rewards.

Novak Djokovic has some true fanbois, yes.

But if he gets lots more now, it’s only glory hunters.

He was a third wheel for many years by the way, so it was a correct description.

Then all Fed's new fans while he was GOATing,
since 2009 and before (best of all active players),
were glory hunters?

Many, for sure,
but actually - the times of hardship and lacking behind others
are the best test of fandom, those who stick with their favourite no matter what.

All Novak's fans so far have past that test.
Fedal fans are yet to get through it.

All those who supported Novak Djokovic from the beginning, yes.

I am sure that many Fedal fans shall do the same. Those who don’t aren’t their true fans.
