The US needs to get some momentum for the future of the game. We are in something of a drought now. Who are our future grand slam hopes? Roddick- that's a definite maybe, Dent- no way, Fish- no, Ginepri-no, Young- well, too young to tell just yet. wta: Harkelroad may be our best hope! Kirkland, not from what I can tell, Irvin- not really, Granville-not unless she really develops something awesome all of a sudden. All the new kids on the block are from eastern europe right now, with some possibilities from Asia. We had grand slam champions for so long that it was never really an issue for us but once the Williams sisters, Davenport, Capriati, Agassi retire we won't have any strong contenders to fill their shoes. That hasn't happened to us for a while. The Russian gals have a lot of contenders, some have already struck grand slam stardom last year. Those women are here to stay for a long time with so many countrywomen waiting to fill their shoes. China is producing some threats in the wta also. Japan is a factor too. Let's hope Ashley Harkelroad can make the US very proud. I'll be watching her if she is televised.

goober said:I hope that Harkelroad does well but if she is our best hope for a grandslam, we are in big trouble. I am not even sure if she will even be top 50. She is 21 years old and hasn't won a WTA title yet. Her best showing is 3rd round at a grandslam. Usually on the women's side if you haven't done big things by 21 like win major titles or go deep in a grandslam, you probably aren't not going to be top 10 material.
Exactly, Goober. We are in trouble right now but as Mary Jo Fernandez stated, it is just "cyclical". We will eventually produce more championship caliber players.goober said:I hope that Harkelroad does well but if she is our best hope for a grandslam, we are in big trouble.
