ATP CUP isn't doing it for me.

Literally no atmosphere, at least from the matches I’ve seen. Something just feels off about this whole tournament but I can’t pinpoint what exactly
Maybe it's for Christmas? Due to the celebrations, public holidays and so forth I feel tennis season has not started yet. It's a weird sensation.

One way of looking at the event is that it is the most serious event ever to have begun a season and it leads directly onto the first slam of the year.

It gives top players guaranteed matches, and from the quarters on the competition will be deadly serious and focused on one city with a newly renovated court.

A classic match or two over the final two days will alter the perception of the whole event.

Also points are for grabs. I’m not crazy about it, but it’s easy to see it can build prestige as it goes along, like Hopman Cup.

Laver Cup is just a fun invitational event. It's like WWE...the players put on a show and act passionate about it, and the crowd leaves happy. It's pretend, but in a good way.

Disagree. There are points on offer, rivalry h2h counts, all players want to represent their nation and the fans can really get into it. Lots of soccer type atmosphere in the stands. This is just the 1st yr so if it finishes in dramatic fashion eg Nadal d Djoker 0-6 76 76 it could become a calendar highlight, something the players and fans look forward to start the yr with a bang.

Honestly, I haven't being paying too much attention. I've been on a De Niro overload, started off with Raging Bull, Midnight Run, Taxi Driver and just capped it off with Goodfellas today (Damn Joe Pesci is freakin' insane in that movie). Probably will start to focus more and more as the days go by and especially around AO time.
Have you seen Paradise Casino?

What a waste of time

I never had a TennisTV subscription. Got it today for a month. Some exciting matches.

Unlike laver cup, there are no fake celebrations and forced enthusiasm. Hated the format of Davis cup despite players caring for it. At ATP cup, so many big matches already and QF have not even started.

Ummm...I was talking about Laver Cup in the quote you highlighted from me. You seem to be talking about ATP Cup.

Hmm. The format of the ATP Cup is almost identical to that of the Davis Cup Finals held in Madrid in November 2019.

Personally I think it's too crowded in both format and teams.

Firstly, if you're counting tie wins then why the point of playing rather meaningless 3rd matches when not needed just for tiebreaks? Just all the circumstances posted for Canada to make final eight was laughable, like Spain needs to beat Japan 3-0, etc, etc.

Either make it about wins and tiebreaks are matches lost, not won (so going 2-0 is just as good as 3-0). Or if you want all the matches played then get rid of wins, so it's not about 2-1 with 7 matches won and 2 lost and just 7-2 on the standings for matches won.

Then the amount of teams at 24. Look, tennis is what it is in terms of countries that have enough top players to care about. It's not fair I get it but you gotta cut it off somewhere and ultimately the countries out of the loop initially might climb their way in. This is just money grab like the Euro Cup adding more than half the continent now (way more than half).

But obviously if you were doing just 16 teams then the RR format is muted and you might as well start the knock-out. But I'd also have it Best of 5 set format for SF and F with day rest inbetween.

So yeah, as it is currently setup there's issues and it's a lot of wasted time before the final eight.

My bad.
The way teams were selected for Davis cup finals was bad. No Greece (Tsitsipas), Austria (Thiem), Bulgaria (Dimitrov). Moreover, Zverev opted out.
Here all top non-injured players are participating except for Roger, Wawrinka.
Selecting only 1 city (that too madrid) led to poor crowd in non-spanish matches. At ATP cup, there is a good crowd even for non-Aus matches.

The teams were not selected for the Davis Cup Finals ! Greece, Austria, Bulgaria did not qualify for the Finals.
You obviously have no idea what the Davis Cup is.

Zverev preferred to earn money by playing exhibition tournaments, instead of playing for his country at the Davis Cup.

Speaking of the crowd at the ATP Cup, here is a picture:

The ATP Cup is the most talked about event in the history of Australia outside of the AO :)
Its been a smashing success and we haven't even played the QFs yet!
When players are playing in teams for their country, even non-tennis fans take an interest.....like a World Cup.
And Davis Cup has also increased in popularity because of the new format being like a World Cup.

Wow selecting one match to show crowd. Should I search the photos of every non-spanish match at Davis cup?

Thats what I am saying. The ****ty format didn't allow Austria, Greece and Bulgaria to qualify and thus, we had no top players from these countries. Learn to read. I guess they teach you that in primary school.
Time is flying but you never change.

I’m enjoying it. This tourney seems like a test run to compete with the Davis Cup and perhaps long term they’ll simply merge. Let’s see how it goes. It’s fun.

It's a cool tournament - surprised by the sheer volume of tennis required to win so soon before the Australian Open, however.

Guess we will have to wait to AO to see if it has any ill-effects on the older guys. I hope not.

I liked the format. Great to see players going at it (ATP points awarded)with country pride team angle as well - much more interesting start to the year, than the usual minor tournaments with a the top player spread around different locations.
