1 Federer 9 840
2 Nadal 8 065
3 Murray 6 040
4 Del Potro 5 805
5 Djokovic 5 700
6 Roddick 4 410

Here is the ATP race for Top 6. Correct me on the numbers if I'm wrong.

-Fed is way above Nadal, who is also way above everyone else.
-Del Potro has passed Djokovic and is very close to Murray. One good ATP 1000 and he will pass Murray too.
-Djokovic is still above Roddick even with his horrible season.

Fed >>> Nadal >>> Muray > DelPo > Djokovic >>> Roddick

That's pretty much it. I hope Djokovic finds his grove by the time AO 10 is around, and knocks Murray from top 5, he doesn't deserve to be there at all.

Its all a big sham, what really matters is bananas!

Very funny... What;s wrong with my thread anyway? Some people may be interested, who knows.

Ok, there is another thread on the race, I see.

DELP OOO >> murray/djokovic

murray and djokovic have disappointed in the big ones this year. totally uninspiring play. waste of talent.

No I think this is a great thread. The slams are the most important events on tour, and they are a great measuring stick of how players do over the year. I love Del Po, and I think he has a good shot at the top 3 next year.

Where did I mention slams?

But you see DelPo is only 240 points less than Murray. Do you think he can be No.3 this year?!

I think Federer will definitely end the year #1 and Nadal definitely #2. After that it will be a real battle between Del Potro, Murray, and maybe even Djokovic for #3, #4, and #5.

I definitely think that Del Potro could emerge as the solid #3 during the next 6 months or so. His game continues to improve very quickly, and now he has gained some real mental toughness. I think that Murray may have topped out in terms of his potential level of play and the same holds true for Djokovic, though I think he has more upside than Murray. Roddick did great to stay near the top, but his career may now face some decline, especially since that Wimbledon loss may have been the best effort he had left at a major. I also believe that Nadal-Federer will remain at the top. Federer must want to play Nadal at least a few more times in majors before he hangs up his sneakers, so I think that rivalry will spur him on to stay in the game for a while longer. I still see Nadal as being too tough, given that he finds some solutions to his injury problems from last year. I wouldn't write him off as the "heir apparent" to the tennis throne.

Yeah, Fed will end up No.1. But Rafa seems to be injured right now. If DP or Murray can win everything in sight until the end of 2009, they can overtake him. Nadal is 2000 points ahead of them, and there are over 3500 points to pick up in 2009.

But, it's a question who actually cares about the year end points. They are all probably exhausted after a very unpredictable year

yes of course, the race is pretty close and it will be very interesting.
And yes the race is the right way to look at it and NOT the rankings because Murray has something like 2000 points to defend from now till the end of season!

I hope Delpo is not tired though, because he has many matches on his feet and the remaining Masters and WTF will determine positions no.3-5.

Murray still has the points from last year's Madrid (1000) which will fall off in October, and which he can't make up. Without them, he has less points than Djokovic.

But, it will depend a lot on motivation. Top players haven't done very well last year at indoors events, and probably will not be doing well this time either. Who is most motivated will win, and it seems to me it's Murray. DelPo is probably confused after his first win, and Djokovic... who knows.

Murray should finish strongly and may even surprise at the masters, I just dont think he can win for 2 straight weeks yet.

Murray can defend his 1000 Madrid points at the new Shanghai Masters 1000 event. That's not to say he will, just that your assertion is incorrect.

Oh, is that how it goes?

OK, I get it. It's the same thing, except you switch the names.

edit: jjerman, he's right. Just switch the 2 tournaments.

ATP points 'fall off' after 52 weeks. The points are not linked to any subsequent event; but this year's Shangai has the effect of giving players an opportunity to 'defend' last year's Madrid points.

Madrid 08 points fall off on 19th Oct
Shanghai 09 points go on on 19th Oct

Just imagine that Shanghai is Madrid, and that clay Madrid is called Hamburg. Then it's the same. :)
