Best Tennis Video Game?!

Sooo, whats your vote?

I have Virtua Tennis 5 and 09, Topspin 3 and Sega Superstar Tennis (lol). Virtua Tennis 5 is the best for fun with some friends, and Topspin is the best for a more "realistic" game.

Discuss!

Top spin is ridiculous. I know the title is called 'top spin' but they emphasize it too much and you can generate unreal spin which in reality no one can.

Smash court (any) is good. They have good camera views as well which is the most improtant thing.

Top Spin 3 for me. To me after playing TS3, I couldn't go back to playing the VT2009 way. It was too arcadey, too unrealistic...I had to sell it.

BTW, here's a preview of the Xbox 360/PS3 version of Grand Slam Tennis

I agree with this big time. Though the game has its flaws like boring presentation, hard to do an inside out, no add-ons, the game is fun and the most realistic game out there.

Jimmy Connors tennis on the SNES. Still play it to this day. Its the best tennis game ever. Also Capriati tennis on the Genesis. That was a fun game with alot of made up names.

Mario Tennis for the original Game Boy was the best.

Don't remind me. This was the best. I think you mean Game Boy Color BTW.

But yeah, that game was tons of fun. Creating my guys named Roger and Pete, after Fed and Sampras of course. Then getting all the way to the Island Open and playing all those weird teams w/ the sick spins and slices.

And after winning the Island Open, having to be Mario. That game was tons of fun. Still remember blowing through the AA batteries playing that game for hours on end.

+1 on Grandslam Tennis for Wii.

Most realistic controls. Although the graphics may not be the best, the human/computer interaction is by far the most realistic. Slice, topspin, flat all depends on your swing angle and wrist. Serve and Volley is intuitive and fun, you can really get some nice touch shots. Online matches are a kick, and quite challenging. Using either with or without nunchucks is fun, but with the nunchuck is the most realistic. This is the best tennis sim IMHO.

I really like Virtua Tennis for Wii, it's a great arcade style game. Baseline play is intuitive and fast paced. Serve and Volley is not as intuitive and requires some work (getting those fine touch shots are a challenge at first). Moving up through the ranks takes forever, and I really don't care for the "Arcade" games to gain skills. Is it me or do all of the players in Virtua Tennis look exactly alike except for skin tone and hair?

I have Topspin but for some reason just hate it. Probably just me, but the controls aren't intuitive, and game play is unrealistic.

top spin 3's innovative controls were really refreshing. it really emphasized the loading/coiling and unloading of shots while hitting groundstrokes. it also had a robust create a character, with face sculpting and a wide array of licensed gear. and character skill progression was spot on despite the fact one's character could never be as good as federer or nadal. lastly, like previous iterations of top spin, real-world strategies dealing with court positioning and shot placement work well in the game. these aspects are excellent and ts3 was, overall, a very good game. but it had its shortcomings.

it did feel slow at times.
the animations of the pros didn't seem authentic.
rushing the net with R1 and retreating to the baseline with L1 seemed a little off for me.
–it didn't feel like there was a solid mid-court/transition feature.
–chasing down lobs from the net was a *****.
the clothes were really baggy.
the L1/R2 used to implement greater control/power was better, but still risky.

on a positive note, ts4 is scheduled to come out soon.

The original Top Spin imo.

pam development really did will with this game....word had it that microsoft spent oodles of money when the xbox came out for a soccer game company to develop a new revolutionary tennis game. i prefer TS1 to 2 or 3 any day of the week. the points are so much fun and the computer is not too predictable, and point craftiness is possible just like real tennis.

TS1 is the only reason i still have my original xbox, and the only game i play (well i do have halo 2 lying around somewhere too) :)

i also enjoyed playing this game back in 2003 called Tennis Master's Cup Tennis for PC. was a really quality game

Grand Slam Tennis on the wii, with the Motion Plus adapter, is the way to go. You will never want to push buttons again.

I definitely liked TopSpin 3 the most. I hear Topspin 4 is going to be incredible. They're using the same motion generator as NBA 2K11. The Federer Tweener is even going to be in it.

I own Top Spin 1,2 and 3, as well as Virtua Tennis 3 and 2009. Out of all the them I like Top Spin 2 the best. Both Virtua Tennises were fun and had great character models, but to unrealistic and rallies online would go forever. Top Spin 3 had great features, but the gameplay is ABMISMAL. I don't care if it's "realistic", characters moved sluggish even compared to real athletes, volleying was impossible, and the fact they took away the Risk bar made those type of shots extremely difficult. I'm sure If continued to play it, I would get better, but it's no fun at all so I have no motivation.
On the other hand Top Spin 1 and 2, especially 2, are fantastic. TS2 featured the gameplay from TS1, but making tops spin and slice shots harder to control, rewarding skilled players who mastered the shots, while still being friendly towards new players who could stick to flat shots. No other features really stick out, but the gameplay is by far the most important part for me in a tennis game.

Strongly agree, TS 2 has the best gameplay by far out of the games you listed. VT3 had the best models and animations by far but the gameplay was way too unrealistic. Of course unrealistuic doesn't mean not fun, though :)

You're right, I should have mentionned by "unrealistic", I didn't mean not fun. I've probably played VT2009 more than any other tennis game, and had loads of fun. Being "Unrealistic" only made it not fun online sometimes becuase you couldn't pull off tricks like dropshots in the middle of rallies cause there was no sort of "Risk Shot" system in the game, so if bad players pick fast characters like Nadal (who runs like a bullet in that game), they can compete with a really good player all day long because they just have to get the racket on the ball and it will always go in.

there were a few reasons why i thought topspin 1 was better than 2. in ts2 there were no instant replays, the sound of the racquet hitting the ball sounded like a drum, and the computer was too predictable, was able to win tournaments without losing a game. the hard level on ts1 was much more difficult

I agree with some of your points, and even though TS1 did have harder A.I., I had a character that could hit the most ridiculously angled top spin shots that couldn't go out even if I tried. This made TS1 easier for me than TS2, but both are still my favorite tennis games.

I see your point. What I like about T1 and T2 is the size and speed of the ball. It has more of a cartoonish/arcade look when the ball is hit flat and hard. But the fact that you can get so many balls back on the dead run while way out of position, makes it exciting and challenging. It really keeps you in the moment, although it is not as realistic for constructing points. I do agree that the hard level was tougher on T1. At the time I played T1, I had a PS2. Now I have an XBox360. I do have T2 for the XBox, but not T1. It's been a long time since i've played T1. But I do recall that I really liked the gameplay.

I have played most of the games and here are my rankings:

1)Topspin 4-Realistic gameplay that requires more strategy than reaction time, excellent variety of players(past and present), challenging levels and sufficient variety of camera angles.
2)Smashcourt Tennis 3-(Surprised nobody mentioned this one) Exciting gameplay w some realistic elements(although certainly more of an arcade style game at heart), Realistic player game styles and looks, certainly requires good timing and patience to set up points and move to the ball(especially at net) and a variety of camera angles. Not enough players to choose from, though.
3)TIE-Virtua Tennis 4- Best graphics, arcade style game that still requires good timing, patience and strategy to build and finish points. 3)Topspin 2-(see above).
5)Virtual Tennis 2009-Excellent Graphics, good player variety and variety of camera angles. Too much of an arcade style for my taste, but still fun to play.
6)Topspin 3- Great variety of venues and players to choose from.
Gameplay is weak, too difficult to time and control shots and the herky jerky movement of players is distracting.

Grand Slam Tennis on Wii. I played it to death until people started cheating (no touch aces super fast shots) and the cheap game play (serve ,rush net, put away) and the super lobbers. The Japanese players were notorious for cheating so much the Wii forums warned me to stay away and not play them at all by just exiting the game. They put that out 3 years ago and haven't updated it. Only game that had real play mechanics.

Online connection issues were ****e.

You were proven correct! 2K really messed up Top Spin 4! (Top Spin 3 was a great game)...

Now that my PS3 has the dreaded YLOD (it lasted over 5 years), I'm deciding if I should go the PC gamers route. I'm getting a new laptop in the next month or so.
