There was also some choking, due to colateral effects on the 1976 Masters Final.Orantes made one of his patented comebacks, again.

Another contender:

The decisive fifth rubber of the 2002 Davis Cup final, in Paris. Russia's Mikhail Youzhny comes back from 2 sets down to defeat France's Paul-Henri Mathieu, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

This one I remember very clearly. During 2 sets Mathieu was destroying Youzhny, it was like impossible that Youzhny would come back, I mean Mathieu was so much more powerful, Yoyzhny was still a kid, I remember his shots being very weak... then all of a sudden, Mathieu started spraying UEs everywhere...that was really sad to watch.

1) Mario Ancic lost from 6-4 4-6 5-0* 40-0* up against Ivo Minar.... to 5-7 in the 3rd. (Ostrava challenger, Czech Republic; 26.04.2010)

don't want to sound cliché, but it has everything to be a fix, a czech player playing at home against a croatian in the challenger tour. wouldn't be surprised at all if this one was a fix

Murray is a nice lad, serious, good looking and britton...what a pitty the choking reputation will always be behind him- he should hire Ivan Lendl as a guru, that is the only way to learn how another choker overcame it and became one of the all time greatest players-.

WOW, you were spot on, Kiki. I liked their partnership and it definitely was the catalyst that helped Murray to win the biggest titles.

Two women's matches immediately come to mind as the biggest choke ever:

Clijsters 2003 AO semifinal vs Serena.
Davenport 2005 AO final vs Serena.

Don't know which one was the biggest, but I know which one was the most beautiful.

Only one person has mentioned it so far, but this has got to be the biggest choke of all time. No doubt about it. Jana Novotna's self-destruction in the 1995 French Open against Chanda Rubin of the USA. She was up in the first set but lost it in a tie-break 8-10. She took the 2nd set 6-4 and was then 5-0, 40-0 up in the deciding set before making a string of unforced errors, blowing 9 match points and losing the set and the match 8-6.

Don't think any of these other matches come close to this.

I only remember bits and peices but didn't Paire once lose a set after having set point and something like a 5-0 or 5-1 lead?

Choice from the OP gives it a run for its money.

Man, imagine watching that match live as a massive Novotna fan. How torturous. Anyone watch that live?

Some chokes...

Federer - Hidalgo, Monte Carlo 2008. Hidalgo was two breaks up in the third, 5-2, served for the match twice, but eventually lost the match in the tie-break.
Federer - Nadal, Hamburg 2008: Federer was serving for the first set at 5-1, 40:30 (two breaks up), but lost six consecutive games and the set. He was a break up in the second during the whole set, was serving to take the match into a third, but got broken and barely won in the tie-break. Lost the third eventually.
Đoković - Serra, Halle 2009: Serra won the first set 7-5, was 5-2 up and had 0:40 (three consecutive match points) on Novak's serve in the second, but lost that set 7-5 and later the match.

Honorable mention, Nicolas Almagro. In his first ever GS match, he served for the match against Guga at the FO 2004 in the fifth set (at 5-4 I think), but got broken and lost the match. Poor guy, his career started with a choke, has choked many times during his time and will probably finish it with another choke.

I think that Mauresmo vs. Kandarr at RG in 2001 has got to be one of the worst chokes in tennis history.

She had won 25 out of her last 27 matches, and went into the tournament as the favourite according to many people, especially in France, and with a lot of expectation and pressure on her shoulders. But she simply couldn't handle that, crumbled and basically choked right from the start in her 1st round match. It goes without saying that choking doesn't just involve getting nervous when close to victory, but also being completely over-awed by the occasion and freezing to begin with.

In my opinion, choking right from the start in a 1st round match against a player ranked outside the top 50 who never reached a tour level final during her career, is far worse than choking right from the start in a semi-final or final and against an elite opponent (like Dementieva did vs. Myskina at RG in 2004), or choking from a strong winning position and / or when the finishing line has been in sight especially against an elite opponent (like Novotna did vs. Graf at Wimbledon in 1993, Henin did vs. Clijsters at RG in 2001 etc.)
