Black Poly Help

For the last 2 years have been using Hyper G Soft 1.25/Ghostwire 1.22 at 45/43 in weighted up blacked out Extreme Tours. Plays good, no arm issues and inexpensive ($99 for each reel when on sale). I know string color is of little importance overall, but I can’t stand the green. Actually I don’t like any color strings.

Please recommend some black poly’s that I can use in the mains with Ghostwire as a cross. Soft to medium stiffness. I usually restring after 6 hours, so as long as I can get 2-3 hits in before it completely bags out, tension maintenance is not all that important. Shaped round doesn’t matter, I create my own spin. 5.0 heavy topspin baseliner.

I have tried the following so far:

T1 Black Knight - Stiff break-in period then a fantastic string, but bothered my elbow a little. May try again.
Gamma Moto Soft - You don’t hear much about this string, but it played pretty well. Good feel
Cyclone Tour - Not really black, but close. Great pocketing, comfort but even at 1.30 a little too lively.
Confidential - Not very comfortable, didn’t do anything for me.

Thanks

Volkl Cyclone is less lively that Cyclone Tour, so Cyclone Black could be worth a try. Ytex Square X Black is comfortable and could also be worth a try. Since you're stringing so often, I would go with good value strings, and both of these are good values.

If you liked Gamma Moto, try Gamma Ocho.
8-sided, used as a main in a poly/syngut hybrid and really liked it.

Also liked poly tour drive, good spin, feel wasn't bad. Did NOT last long in a full bed, but as a hybrid you'd probably be ok.

Tecnifibre 4S is good if you want RPM Blast characteristics. Kind of similar to Hyper G. Good string.
Of the ones you've already tried, Gamma Moto is my favorite.

MSV focus Hex 1.20 soft is a lot like HyperG 120, and the 125 version is a bit like the HyperG 125.
Having said it, I prefer HyperG to them.

Hyper G Soft is only a 172 stiffness, so Cyclone Tour is one of the few that's close; tension maintenance with CT is a noted issue, so you could try upping the tension slightly. Regular Cyclone or Poly Tour Pro might work if you can tolerate an increase in stiffness.

Weiss CANNON Black 5 Edge.
(Note Andy hitting an effortless one handed - he's normally two handed hitting over the ball - topspin backhand cross court winner at the end of the string playtest vid.)

Thanks for all the recommendations. I removed strings that were too costly, too stiff or too sharply shaped. I have narrowed down the list to the following strings. I will give them a try and see if one works for me.

Tourna Black Zone
Tourna Big Hitter Black
Black Magic
KB Pro Line II
IsoSpeed Blackfire and Baseline
Signum Hyperion
Cyclone
MSV Focus Hex +38

Thanks again.

Has anyone tried this black hyper g?

I tried a set of it, feels similar to hyper g, just more muted. Similar spin, slightly more comfortable. It was in a bladeV7 so it could have been the racket that made it feel muted.

It would be my choice if you like Hyper G, just want it in black.

After a few weeks of testing, I narrowed down my favorites list. I ended up trying 11 new strings all at 45/43 and in 1.25 gauges (or closest) crossed with 1.22 Ghostwire.

There were a few strings I wanted to try, but didn’t for various reasons:

IsoSpeed Baseline - Heard good things, but as they don’t sell sets I didn’t want to spend $40 on a reel just to try.

Poly Tour Pro - Tried this years ago, but don’t remember if I liked it. Thought about trying it again, but I must not have liked it all that much If I can’t recall.

**** String - A black Hyper G intrigued me, but again only a reel and regular Hyper G is a little stiff for me as I preferred Hyper G Soft.

Favorites

Tourna BHB7 - Reminded me of a more aggressively shaped Cyclone Tour. Comfortable, good pocketing but not as launchy. Doesn’t last very long, but not a factor for me as I restring after a few hours anyway.

Tru Pro Black Knight - Always come back to this one, just wish it wasn’t so boardy for me for most of the first hitting session.

Tourna Black Zone - This string surprised me. Had a similar feel to BHB7 in a round string. Lower powered and a much more consistent string bed. No problem creating tons of spin with it and seemed to hold tension pretty well. KB Pro Line II played close, but a little stiffer for me so I liked Black Zone better.

The Winner

Black Zone. Never even heard of this string before this post and really connected with with it. Controlled power and comfortable is how it felt to me. If Black Knight didn’t have the break-in period, it would have been a tough call but Black Zone plays nice from the start. Also I can find it for $85 a reel, so perfect for frequent re-stringing. I will buy another set to play with just to make sure my arm is ok with it, before picking up a reel.

Thanks Again.

Thank you for the update. What did you think about Hyperion and black magic?
Black Magic was a nice string and one I could play with. It played somewhat similar to Black Zone and Pro Line II. For me Black Zone did everything just a little bit better. Maybe Black Magic was slightly more comfortable, but not by much.

Hyperion had no feel for me. Not stiff, but just generic feeling to me. Nothing really stood out for me on this one.
