Brandon Nakashima legit next gen or just a hot streak ?

He's won two rounds at Delray Beach now, beating Vesely and Norrie in straight sets, plays against Nishioka next. Other results recently: lost to Mmoh in straight sets 76, 62, beat Redlicki 64, 76. Lost to Tiafoe 36, 76, 75 (served for that match and choked) and beat Tomic and Harrison in straight sets. He's only 18 and has good size at 6"1, and his strokes are really nice technically, but he's not particularly fast.

I saw him play up close at the Fairfield challenger (he's improved since then, obviously).

He has a very solid game but nothing spectacular. Very smart, rarely overhits or tries stupid shots so he really maximizes his strength. Not fast but anticipates well. So plays like 90% of the tour but his smarts and discipline are a good upside for a young player.

Smart move hiring Cash who hopefully can improve his all court game which may set him apart (ie higher) than the endless ocean of players who play a similar game from the baseline - he needs some sort of stand out weapon.

Nah, he's way bigger than Nishi and will never be near as fast. Hopefully his serve will become a weapon for him. As @atatu says his strokes are very technically proficient, not a whole lot can go wrong so he has the potential to hit big.

Just grabbed this from my phone, he lost to Steve Johnson in 3. Today he would have won the match for sure. Nice venue for a community college!

Disappointing loss to Nishioka today in three sets, missed a golden opportunity to reach an ATP level semifinal, but hopefully it will boost his confidence heading into the Spring,

I don't see much similarity to be honest, so it's just because they're both of Japanese descent. Also, have you noticed that anytime someone is called "Baby ____" they end up being a big disappointment ? Baby Fed (Grigor) Baby Jordan (Harold Minor) Baby Shaq (Hugh Jones)....

He plays really intelligently and never seems to let the situation get him too high or too low. He has all the mental tools in his toolkit. Not necessarily a believer on the complete package, but he's definitely top 75 material. Just not sure if that's his ceiling or floor.

Beat Sugita (7th seed) at the Oracle Challenger today in straight sets, his ranking is definitely improving slowly but surely !

Baby Nishikori?
Looks to be the next Nishikori indeed.
Will you please stop with this racist stereotype schtick? I’m glad Japanese-American actors like Pat Morita and George Takei never got stamped as the next Toshiro Mifune. If any stereotype should be applied it’s a question of if the young native Californian can adapt to clay, which he seems capable of if he can improve on the dirt from a RG Boy’s QF finish as a 17-year-old (lost to Seyboth Wild).

Please edit your post and remove my quote from it. If you read it carefully, you'll see that I was also calling into question the validity of the comparison. Thanks.

By quoting you, I’m not insinuating you are a source but rather that the small minded talk can spread to infect others.

Hes a grinder with no weapons. Top 75-100 is his ceiling. But of course he is so young he could develop, like James Blake did. Hoping for the best as American mens tennis is in the dump

Have you seen who is in the top 50 right now ? Nishioka, Coric, Querrey, etc. He can definitely crack the top 50 if he improves over the next 4-5 years.
Edit: He just won in straights against the #100 player on the tour, 27 year old Salvatore Caruso.

No I def agree with you. Nishikoa was mostly outside top 50 until recently and hes lefty. Coric seems much bigger altho I know he and Nakashima pretty much same height. And SQ has the serve.

But the mental game of Nakashima definitely seems legit and prob better than all those guys you mentioned. Would be a breath of fresh air if he could breakthru.

Ok he took out Giron in three, faces Sock in the semis which will be a real test as Jack seems to be playing better now.

I think he'll be in the 50-100 range by season's end. Where he'll be in 2-3 years is hard to say. He's got skills, but outside of his mental acuity, his weapons are fairly run of the mill in the top 100.

Well not a bad result, losing in three to Sock, but he needs to find a way to win those close matches.

I agree, but it's interesting for coaches to note that a consistent grinder like Nakashima will always have the query as to whether his weapons are big enough to ever bridge a top 50 ranking, whereas a clown like Paire with a monster backhand has been able to stay in and around the top 25 for a large part of his career
Shows the need for weapons

Paire has a monster serve and has amazing hands, I wouldn't call him just a backhand.

Bizarre that he's working with Cash. Nakashima is the polar opposite of that guy.

Perhaps he dreams of one day following one of his amazing backhands to net and hitting a volley.

Fair call, I was more referring to his off court laziness and general reliance on his (admittedly very impressive strengths/talen), where a player who's clearly been drilled to an inch of his life to have such a consistent game has looked a little underpowered at pro level - shows the importance of developing weapons

I saw him win a Futures tournament at my club in 2018. It looked like he is a baseline grinder without any big weapons and I thought he would become a top 50 player someday. I would be very surprised if he becomes a player who is consistently within the top 10.
