Can someone explain byes to me please ?

I know in recreational tournaments they have byes for the top seeds if there is an uneven number of entrants, but how does it work in pro tournaments ? For example in the challenger in Binghamton this week the doubles draw has 4 byes, surely there were four teams that wanted to get into the draw ? The singles draw had no byes.

I think it is more to encourage the top players/teams to play. They get a bye, if the win their first match they points for both rounds.

Don't underestimate bye. He has more wins (1) on the tour than any of us.
