Can you believe that Hewitt was at one point (2002) ahead of Sampras, Federer, Safin, Agassi, and Ferrero?

Hewitt got the most out of his gifts until his body began to give out. It is to be admired. And if peak Federer did not emerge, he would have won even a few more things until his physical decline in 2006.

Safin has all the talent in the world but is a nut. Talent + hard work + right attitude trumps insane talent I guess.

Ferrero was really only ever that suited to being a potential great on clay. He could have won more on clay if nerves didnt get the best of him sometimes at RG in 2000-2003, and if his body didnt give out after that, but he was never going to be a steady #1 or dominant type player on all surfaces.

Ferrero stated that he preferred to play on hardcourts.

And Ferrero was ten times more talented than the current generation of tennis players. Certainly an all-time great underachiever.

"Tennis experts agreed that Ferrero's clay-court game translated well to the hard court due to his aggressive style of playing. He also had one of the greatest forehands in the game and immense speed on the court"

And he took out Hewitt and Agassi consecutively at the 2003 US Open

No he wasn't. It had more to do with most of the other guys sucking on clay. I don't think he was any better or worse on clay

Actually the clay field in the early 2000s was pretty good, way better than todays. You had Kuerten, Costa, Ferrero, Coria, Safin, Corretja all near their best and Grosjean, old Agassi, young Federer, Kafelnikov, Rios, and numerous Spaniards and Argentines, all quite dangerous as well.

Patrick did a breakdown once while commentating where he explained in detail doing a technical breakdown why Hewitt was better on all surfaces but clay than Ferrero, and why Ferrero was better on clay. I dont remember all the details but it made perfect sense at the time when you listened to it. It shows in their head to head too, Hewitt won all their clay matches easily, but won only once off of clay, and that was over badly slumping Hewitt in late 2003.

Meh. 3-2 record including 2 matches on grass. Nothing to stick your chest out over. Unless you’re Lleyton Hewitt.

Beat him at the USO in 2013 as well when he was over the hill and Del Potro was having one of his better years. Del Potro has also given Nadal and Djokovic fierce matches on grass too...

No he didn't. Ferrero was faster and his BH was better as well
There isn't really much difference between the quality of their backhands, forehands or their speediness around the court. At the end of the day, Hewitt has the winning head to head and the better career achievements and I'll take most of his shots over Ferrero.

Ferrero won both their slam encounters. He had a sprained ankle in his first French Open final that he lost. Gosh.. Ferrero could generate tremendous power on his forehand and blast it down from crazy angles. His BH was equally potent. And he was as fast, if not faster than Nadal.

Heuristic is definitely a bigtime Hewitt hater. Trying to insist on Ferrero being a better player than Hewitt on anything but clay, and hitting all shots better and moving better besides on clay, LOL! And based on the other thread a biased Roddick fanboy. Must be emotions tied to the very good rivalry those two guys used to have.

Hewitt is easy to hate. But in reality they are pretty similar players.

Agassi beat Hewitt the defending U.S open champ to reach the final in 2002 only to lose to Sampras 6–3, 6–4, 5–7, 6–4, winning his 14th and last GS title. Pete retired the following year.

He had some injury that affected his forehand. I remember watching him post 2005 without any power in it. Looked like hewitt's. The commentator also remarked that Ferrero's once feared forehand is dead.

So Ferrero whopped his butt both at Roland Garros and the US Open, but you still contend they're about equal?

Hewitt lied in an interview talking about his most memorable wins, mentioning beating Federer in tHE 2003 DAVID CUP. "Roger was the nr 1 player at the time" /LLeyton Hewitt.

No he wasn't...

You're right. Based on the computer rankings, he wasn't the best player in the world.

However, Roger was nearly fresh off of his first Wimbledon title and was looked at as the player to beat (or one of them.)

He probably would have taken the US Open that year if he hadn't run into Nalbandian in the fourth round.
