Canadian Open 1959 - Any Media Available

Hello: I am Reynaldo Garrido and I won the Canadian Open in 1959. Can anyone help me locate any newspaper, photos, or media for the Canadian Open of 1959? All I have is a newspaper clipping from Cuba at the time. I have looked all over the place online but cant find anything. I do have a photo of me in 1959 credited to the AP but when looking through the internet can't locate any other photo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, don't have any links for you, but read that you actually played against your brother in the finals. Must have felt strange, did you enjoy it or was it awkward? Would be great if you could share some of your interesting experiences from that tournament or your playing career in general,

You could try contacting "media and communications" of the Rogers Cup:

http://www.rogerscup.com/men/english/contactUs.php

They might recommend a person to speak with. The Rogers Cup is basically the same tournament, or a continuation of the Canadian Open as you knew it.

They should have an archives person somewhere. Tell them that you're one of their former champions.

Hello: Thank you for your reply. It really wasnt strange because we played the Cuban National Championship 5 or six times so I was already accustomed to playing him.

Thank you for the info on your website. It's great! I must mention that you have not added the Canadian Open which I won in 1959. I have a picture from the AP that I can send you for your website. Can I ask you how you have such detailed information? You have brought back many memories of people and places that I am astounded by how well you have this? Thanks again.


After 1959 I went back to Cuba and became a professional Jai-alai player and I didn't play tennis for a few years because during that time you could not make any money playing tennis. Tennis pros did not start making any money until 1967. When I won in 1959, I was already 25 years old and I had to start working to make money and that's the reason I became a Jai-alai player.

Well thanks for the compliments! I don't have the results of Canadian 1959, do you? I would love to add the picture you mention on the archives. I have such detailed info from many many sources. Yearbooks, magazines etc.

A most interesting comment. It suggests there were fewer players back then because it was much harder to make any money, not that the development pool was necessarily that much smaller.

Hello Reynaldo

I'm glad I have been able to help. Google has an excellent online newspaper archive where you can find a lot of rare newspaper articles. Some of the newspapers are free to look through but some newspapers require a fee to view an article.

There is some confusion with the results of the men's singles finals for the years 1907-14. I'm not sure why this is, possibly because there was also a Canadian Closed Championships at this point in time (the Canadian Championships were closed to overseas players for a number of years around the turn of the nineteenth century) or because there is a mix-up with the results from the Canadian Championships and the results from the international tournament at Niagara-on-the-Lake, also in Canada, which was open to overseas players and attracted a number of the top players from the United States around this time.

Sir, I play against the son of a guy who might have been in that tournament. Bob Bedard. The son is Paul Bedard who was ranked 12 in the world 45's three years ago. I lost to him 7-6 in the third three years ago.

And I was born in Quebec. This is pretty interesting stuff. Your calves looked incredible by the way. Are they natural, or did you work on them? If so, what exercises did you do?

Are you familiar with William Tully? He won this tournament in the late 1940's. He lives in the same tennis community I do. He has so many great stories from those days.

Also, being Cuban, are you familiar with Mario Tobares? He was the Cuban National Champion a few years in a row in the 1980's?? I met him earlier this year during a tournament I was stringing at. Great player, and very nice guy. he now owns a tennis shop in Miami (the Little Havana region)
