Classic away wins

You favourite "away" win??

Watching Del Potro beat Federer in Basel got me thinking! What an amazing feeling it must be as a top player to beat another great player with all the crowd against you, no team-mates to hide behind, just a team in their box who can do nothing but cheer from the sides and who are largely drowned out!!

It made me think what are the best away wins in recent times? I mean outside of Davis Cup as there it is more team orientated with your captain by your side.

For me as a Roddick fan and living in the UK one of my favourite was Roddick v Murray Wimbledon 2009 semi finals!! Nearly everyone (apart from a brave few) was preparing for a Murray V Federer final! Murray came into that match with a 6-2 record v Roddick with all the media and the country expecting him to be the British finalist in over 70 years!

Roddick some how defied the odds the crowd and Murray to win in 4 sets I remember the moment he won the match the NBC commentator said "Andy Roddick stuns Britain"

Roddick himself said when he heard "come on Andy" he had to just pretend it was aimed at him and not Murray!

Where do you are that match as a great "away win" and what's your best on recent times

Federer hasn't had many because most crowds love him, but off the top of my head I would say when Fed beat Agassi at the USO in 04 and 05 and maybe even Roddick in 06, particularly the match in 2005 though. I liked Agassi, and he was on a dream run, but I couldn't bring myself to cheer against Federer. However the crowd obviously was cheering vociferously for Agassi. Fed was not nearly as popular then as he is now considering he only had 5 slams going into that final so that one sticks out in my mind.

Madrid 2009 comes to mind as well, as does a match against James Blake at the USO in 2006. I rewatched the match on youtube not too long ago, and was a tiny bit surprised at how much the crowd pulled for Blake even if he is American. I had forgotten.

Isner vs. Fed and Tsonga this year was special.

Last summer Roddick served some bombs, which were just completely negated by David Ferrer. It was a tight match but Ferrer was just untouchable and won in 3

Edit: Sorry! Did not see you wanted matches outside of Davis Cup! First thing that comes to mind is when Berdych beat Nadal in the Madrid Masters back in...2005/2006? (Mustard, help me out). Telling the crowd to "shhh" after match point was classic.

That was in 2006. Nadal beat Ljubicic in 5 sets in the 2005 final.

Of all the "away" wins, I can remember Federer's victory (I think it was 2009 and the score 6-4 6-4) over Nadal in Madrid the best, mainly because clay was Nadal's best surface, and the crowd was mostly pro-Nadal :) However I did feel a bit sorry for Rafa as most of the spectators expected a Spanish victory that day, :(

NSK is still looking for Nadal's away wins, and will soon come up with his favourite away win, probably against Ferrer in Barcelona.

nice ones, considering the hostile crowds (the "shhh / you're very bad" thing was hilarious !). i think berdych didn't have an easy time with crowd in his SF vs gonzo the following day...

hewitt's win over kuerten in straight sets on clay was really big for the young aussie ! :)

Sampras winning the Davis cup final on clay versus the Russians in Russia.

Lendl easily beat Vilas in the 1981 Buenos Aires final. Vilas had already won that particular tournament 7 times, and was a huge sporting hero and icon in Argentina as you would expect.

Lendl had also beaten him in the 1980 Davis Cup semi-final in Buenos Aires. So to beat Vilas twice on clay in big matches in Argentina was very impressive.

Also a 19 year old McEnroe straight setting a peak Borg at Stockholm in 1978 was hugely impressive.
