Concerns about poly hybrids: shaped'n'stiff mains?

Hey guys, would you advise me on the following:

How it goes with stiff shaped poly in mains and softer poly cross? I play with fb Solinco Revolution, and would like to hybrid it to soften the stringbed. My biggest dread  is stringbed locking through notching - my current string resists it well with flat sides moving against each other. I'm afraid if I keep Revo in mains it will chew into softer cross and not move well...

Is it correct prediction? What if I soften via mains, keeping stiff crosses? I'm not concerned with breaking, would like to let mains slide on stiff "rail"

Weighted up Ultra Tour (18x20).

Have an unfinished reel of Revo 1.20, othervise I was happy with fb Volkl Cyclone Tour 1.25, for example.

I’ve been playing with soft poly crosses in a poly/poly hybrid for a while now. No problem at all with mains getting locked. It is the crosses that get locked because the mains get notched from snapping back. But still very playable.

In the last 6 months, I’ve been playing regularly with a hybrid of Solinco Confidential (48lbs) in the mains and HEAD Lynx (46lbs) in the crosses, both 1.25mm. Good comfort improvement over a full bed of Confidential with no noticeable loss of snap back and spin. There’s a little notching on the mains and a wear flattening on the crosses when I cut them out at 12-15 hours, but the performance remains very good up until that point. I could possibly get to 20 hours of play out of this setup, but I’m not chancing my elbow which has a bit of a sensitive history.

Have also tried using Hyper-G Soft and MSV Focus Hex (non-plus original) in the mains with Lynx crosses and those worked well, too. For me anyway, I’ve yet to find a soft, round co-poly as comfortable as Lynx.

A very good friend of mine and former D3 player has been using 16L Revolution for quite some time. I string her racquets and she now plays it in the mains with Weiss Cannon Silverstring 17G and she has been hitting with that for maybe 3 years now and likes it.

If Silverstring is not your cup of tea I am sure there are other round poly options you can find that would work great. She gets great playability and she is pretty hard on strings as she crushes the ball.

Thaks guys, will test at next occasion.

I've experienced quite a bit of locking with some round polies in full beds previously. So worries :giggle:

I agree.

I really am not a fan of a full bed of round poly unless you are some sort of advanced player/tournament kid who has the technique and powerful strokes that they don't need the help from string movement and want more control. I think if you find a nice round poly the locking or lack of locking is driven more by the main and how it is performing.

For a non-poly cross yes there is too much friction for the main to overcome and that produces the poor performance.

Some polies will lock. Soft ones ( Polyfibre for example ). I've only seen polies locking only in full-bed. Too high a tension + soft material on both strings ==> recipe for locking.
With two different stings, esp. when one is much stiffer than the other, locking has never happened to me ( with polies ). I do not thing this is something we need to worry about in a poly universe.

Polyfibre will actually notch and lock. I have reels of that stuff sitting unused in my inventory for 5 years now. I am not sure I would include it as a poly. At least one that would be recommended for someone to use.
