-----------

We'll have some cool matches tomorrow:

Albert Montanes (ESP) vs Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP)
Thiago Alves (BRA) vs Tommy Robredo (ESP)
21h (Brasília) – 23h (GMT)
Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) vs Potito Starace (ITA)
Caio Zampieri (BRA) vs Fabio Fognini (ITA)

On court 1, Cuevas will face Hernandez, and we'll have Monaco x Acasuso.

Sorry Massu lost.

I'm also sorry that I was still a non-drinker when I was down in Brasil.

that is unforgivable... no better place to have a nice cold beer than somewhere in leblon

Did you go to Salvador or Rio de Janeiro when you were here?

Next time I recommend you to try this one (Capeta - "devil" in English):

For those who may be interested (and as far as I know), this website http://www2.uol.com.br/tenisbrasil/ offers free live streaming of the matches.

Bellucci may be considered the greatest hope for brazilian fans since Guga's retirement. He's 20 yo, a great claycourter who has won four challengers in a row last year (he rose steadily to top 70 at the end of the first semester). He was able to take 10 games from Rafa in Rolang Garros 1st round last year (I guess only Djokovic could do better at the semifinals). Unfortunatelly he's very, very unstable and weak mentally. But I honestly think he's got potencial to be a top 30 soon; he's still improving technically, what is great.

mentally weak? i suppose that could be, but did you see him last week at vina del mar? he's definitely a strong player physically, so maybe his pairing with the argentine prieto (who looks older so maybe is wiser :) ) could be a good one, since they did manage to beat the defending brazialian doubles champions! :D

wow u were in Brazil and didnt drink!! whats the matter with u :)
I was young! Not really the reason, though. It was a study abroad where we were very closely watched. Very annoying.

*hangs head* You're right. I guess I'm guilty and deserving of punishment.

yea, i think she owes us an apology, or a 12pack of coronas :)
I apologize, but I'm not really that fond of Coronas. Can we negotiate for something else?

bring'em on... my nachos are waiting!

ps:we should create a hedonistic club (ocm, malak, oscar, orang, tars, seffi...)
*flashes back to a memorable and very hedonistic strip beer + ping pong tourny*

I've had a Capeta since my Brasil days. I'm sure it would be better there.
No Salvador. We were in the Rio area for two weeks. I was there for five and half weeks total.

Unfortunately, I had no say in where I got to go. On the plus side, we're planning a Peru/Brasil trip this winter.

Ferrero/Montanes and Cuevas/Hernandez on court right now.

Cuvevas is going down! :p

People here in Brazil tend to have a love/hate relationship with their idols (maybe only Pelé is out of question). So everyone keeps expecting the new Guga. Every player that has some success during his junior career is credited as a phenomenon by the (not so) specialized press. Differently from world-class tennis schools (like the north-american, the french, the australian, the spanish, the argentinian), the brazilian players almost never become top when they're only teens (Kuerten is an exception). Due to lack of resources and support from the tennis confederation (gladly Emilio Sanchez was hired yesterday to become the new supervisor-coordinator), our players rarely play on foreign countries 'till relatively late, so generally they're not as mature as other players of the same age. To make things even worse, our press and fans keep pushing the athletes and not supporting them 'till they somehow conquer a big title.
Bellucci is the newest one regarded as the next Guga. He differs from another "broken promises" because he has more touch, serves better and his strokes have tremendous pace. But Guga was a more relaxed and charismatic player. Bellucci for sure has the skills (watch his match against Del Potro last US Open), but I think he still lacks some stamina, athleticism and mainly a tactic oriented game (sometimes he reminds me of Gulbis) and he needs to increase his desire to win (so he must change his mental posture to remain focused on big points, even when he's under pressure or when he's not on the top pf his game). It seems to me that sometimes his shyness makes him too passive, specially when he starts to lose control of the match. Every match is the same thing: he plays an astonishing first set (generally wins), and then collapses. It happened against Nadal in RG08, Del Potro in USOpen08, Karlovic on Davis Cup, Hrbaty at Beijing Olympics, Verdasco in Cincinatti and so on (in all these matches he won th first set - or served for the set - and then lost the other sets). But at the same time, he's already a very dangerous player when he's on (he had a record of 17 winning streak matches in challengers last year - he'd jumped 200 positions on ATP rankings). So certainlly I'm giving him all the credits he deserves and I really hope he finally gets into top 50 this semester. He's changed his coach last december (a decision that was, once again, criticized by brazilian fans); so let's see what will happen ...

Well, I would suggest you to try our cachaça/pinga if you comeback, specially if you go to Fortaleza (Ceará). To go to Brazil and not drink it is like to go Argentina and not eat their alfajors!

watch out with the spanish translation of pinga :)

Hahahahaha ... I didn't know that. Please don't get me wrong. This is pinga/cachaça here:
cachaca.jpg

Caipirinha is made with pinga. Caipiroska is made with vodka (also very good). Pinga com mel (Pinga with honey) is also very good.

LMAO!!! Oh, I've danced this and other songs so many times during my high school graduation trip to Porto Seguro (Bahia) in 2002!

Wow, that's classy too! But nowadays the most popular music genre here is Funk (very very different from the original from US of de '70s - this one is mostly developed on Rio de Janeiro's slums). The 2008 hit was this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K1DeGCY1ZU (It comes to show that it has a much more explicit appeal to sexuality when compared to Axé songs from É o Tchan and other bands).

Actually I'm not a great fan either (though I'm very eclectic musically speaking), but was only 16/17 yo at the time, so I think I should be forgiven ...

Oh, very nice! My father is portuguese. I hope to study at Coimbra someday.
You have now a very talented young girl (I guess she's 15 yo) on WTA tour. I think she'll be a top player very soon!

I love classical music, 'though I don't have a deep knowledge about it. My favourites guys are all from romantism: Verdi, Wagner and brazilian Carlos Gomes. TBH, Rock and Roll is where I feel more comfortable ...

what major are you having? there are now better choices academicaly speaking... but the romantism of coimbra still remains.

im not just into Classical... in fact im more into electro-jazz and independent dance music (much like Zuco 103, Suba, Bebel Gilberto) and lets not forget the amazing Mangue Beat movement...

ps: and obviously... Tom & Vinicius...

Mangue Beat is awesome! They've revolutionized the way brazilian songs were made. Tremendous sintony between politic poetry and dense rhythm. Sadly Chico Science died so prematurely ... Tom & Vinicius are "GOAT" contenders ... Just brilliant.

I've recently undergraduated in International Relations here at University of São Paulo. I've great affinity with an sociological understanding of the matter, and I've read many books written by Boaventura Santos. So one of my projects is/was to do my graduation/PhD at Centro de Estudos Sociais there in Coimbra. But right now I'm kinda stalled ...
