Former World No. 1 Jim Courier will step out of retirement at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships on Monday night when he partners Andre Agassi in the men’s doubles event. Courier has not played an ATP-level match since Miami in 2000 and has never partnered Agassi. Agassi has played just one doubles event since 2001 – winning one round with Andy Roddick at the Stella Artois Championships at Queen’s with Andy Roddick in 2004.
Agassi and Courier, who received a wild card into the doubles draw, will play South Americans Martin Garcia and Luis Horna at 7:00 p.m.
Courier, who won six ATP doubles titles from 11 finals, was 122-101 in career doubles play. Agassi has a 40-41 career doubles record, having reached four finals and clinched one title: Cincinnati in 1993 with Petr Korda.
"I am very excited to be playing doubles with Andre in Houston.” said Courier. “We played together a few weeks ago at a charity event in Tampa produced by InsideOut - the event company I am a partner in. We clipped Mardy Fish and James Blake in a set of doubles to conclude the evening's matches. To be on the court with my longtime tennis cohort was such fun that we decided we had to do it again soon. Andre called me this week with the wildcard for Westside already arranged, and of course, I said yes immediately. We are looking forward to giving the youngsters all they can handle."
Although Courier has not played on the ATP circuit for five years, last year he finished on top of the Stanford Financial Champions Tour Rankings after an impressive year on the Delta Tour of Champions.
