On the ATP website it states that the Davis Cup with award ranking points starting 2009.

The ITF and the ATP announce today Davis Cup by BNP Paribas dates from 2009 through 2013 and that South African Airways ATP Ranking Points will be awarded for Davis Cup from 2009. This is the first time that ranking points will be awarded for singles and doubles rubbers played in the elite World Group and World Group Play-off Round.

From 2009, ATP ranking points will be awarded to players on an accumulated basis over the preceding 52-week period for the 4 rounds of Davis Cup and the play-off round. These accumulated points will count as one result and will be eligible to count for ranking purposes as one of a player’s four best results from the new 500 category.

Up to 500 points will be on offer to ATP players under the new system, with a bonus of 125 additional points on offer to a player that wins all eight live singles rubbers as well as winning the Davis Cup.

The ITF and ATP announcement means that Davis Cup dates are stabilised through 2013 with the support of the top players whose views were considered during the decision-making process. The addition of ranking points for all live singles and doubles rubbers is an added incentive for players to represent their nations in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

“This is a win/win situation for Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and the ATP,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. “The calendar is stabilised for the upcoming years in the model that the top players requested and, for the first time in history, Davis Cup players will receive well-deserved ranking points for their performance in the competition.”

We are delighted to award South African Airways ranking points for Davis Cup starting in 2009, said Etienne de Villiers, ATP’s Executive Chairman. “The new ATP Tour structure for 2009 is about providing fans, broadcasters and sponsors with very best circuit possible. Like the Tour, Davis Cup is a key component to the growth and future of tennis. We look forward to an exciting and memorable season to come.”

This is good news for players like David Nalbandian, Richard Gasquet, James Blake and Andy Roddick.

I think this is a good move for tennis in general. The decision to pull out of Davis Cup will hurt a little bit more . From 2009 onwards it's not just about the "honour " of playing for your country. Reductio Ad Absurdum

Davis Cup is not good how it is, it needs to be completely revamped...points should be awarded because players not only dont get points but Davis Cup is best of 5 so by playing can sacrifice preparation time, get hurt, get worn out, etc by playing Davis Cup, so they may in effect lose points. Also they need to stop playing the dead rubbers, no body cares and the players hate it, absolutly no point. Lastly it feels like ever couple weeks there is Davis Cup, its way to spread out and with it format hard to follow and keep interest. They should either concentrate it more during a certain period of the year, this would also take some cooperating with the ATP and maybe even make it every other year instead of every year to increase the prestige, similr to the olympics ad the world cup. If we had the Olympics and the World Cup every year no body would care. By making it every year it would be more of an event.

Doesn't jive with the individual nature of tennis. Davis Cup opportunity depends on the performance of team mates. A guy on a team who loses but his team wins will get more opportunities to play.

Davis Cup itself is an anachronism in a time when many players spend most of their training time in another country, high-income players are domiciled where taxes are favorable, and doubles and mixed-doubles teams are increasingly multi-national. It seems like a forced effort of team-building for 2 weeks and imposed nationalism. For example, Paes and Bhupathi only play together now for Davis Cup or country-based championships in Asia - otherwise they cannot stand each other. Even when they play together, it is preceded by mutual insults.

And contrary to what people think, players are not playing Davis Cup now only for the sake of their country. US players get $100,000 per match plus all expenses paid.

Davis Cup seems to appeal to those fans who miss being unruly during soccer matches and view Davis Cup rubbers as good opportunities to create noise.

I will be interested to see if this idea works. I am not sure the top players who don't already commit to Davis Cup will be enticed by this move but if they do, so much the better. If not, perhaps a more wholesale set of reforms will be proposed. Davis Cup should be good for tennis (like the Ryder Cup is for golf)--let's hope this move gives it a charge.
