Q. You didn't start that well. Why are you playing so well here?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Because I change racquets here after Indian Wells. I have the same racquet, Prince, just ‑‑ I have before 16 string; now 18 string. Now I have more control. That's was is surprising I have only one racquet. I play all five matches just with one racquet. I didn't change any racquets.
I have not any one racquets. It should be coming, you know, next week to my home, but with one racquet I play three sets. I didn't change, you know, like, and I was surprising myself, you know?

That doesn't make any sense. So he's playing with 18g strings and has only ONE racquet? So if his strings break he defaults? That simply cannot be true.

I don't think he's talking about strings. I think he's talking about the string pattern on his racquets.

i think he has more raquets in his bag ofcourse but there not the same as his prince 03 tour maybe different specx or something cofusing :S

I dont beleive he's playing with just one racket with such a thin gauge. After all those long matches in such extreme conditions, I dont beleive it.

He might be playing with the same set-up through out the tournament, but just one stick?

he's talking about the string pattern, not the string gauge. sounds like he was saying he was using a 16 x 18 pattern. which is a more open holed pattern. now he's using a 18 x 19 probably. it's a tighter string pattern. which gives you more control.

Q. You didn't start that well. Why are you playing so well here? Because against Tipsarevic you also played well.

Q. What is the racquet? What kind of racquet?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Prince. It's the same Prince, just only 18 string. Little bit more string and I have more control.

Q. What were your tactics tonight?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Really, I don't want to, you know, say. Like, some changing tactic. Just hitting balls very good, you know. I think I have ‑‑ with new racquets I have much better control from forehand and backhand cross.
It's just short cross and go very low, and I think it's good for me. I feeling I can hitting balls and I can control ball, like, good. I really feel good.

Q. What are you going to do if those strings break?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, I have another racquet. (laughter.) I have two racquets, but second racquet is not so great. Like first one, I play all matches. So I don't know what I do. I give to stringer and I try to know how possible, you know, keep in my match longer, come in all my racquets again.

Q. You have no racquet. Isn't a professional tennis player supposed to change racquets every seven games or something like that?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Before, yes. Indian Wells I have seven racquets. I changing like if I have new balls I changing another racquets. But I have no racquets. I cannot change. I just ‑‑ I have only one, I concentration on one.
And, you know, string holding all three sets, that's what's so surprising.

I find it quite interesting that 2 professional tennis players have changed string patterns this year alone.

Murray went to the 16x19 (prestige pro, or maybe his radical with a different drill pattern and pj)

Davydenko to an 18x20 (ozone pro tour)

Davydenkos a funny man. And if only he believed in himself, he could probably do abit more damage to the top 3.

It's funny, but what has also kept him out of the top 3 and away from the big titles: lack of belief. He is the most underrated player on tour by a country mile. He is a stellar ball striker and probably hits a cleaner ball than anyone on tour. He can change the direction of the ball at will. He just needs to believe.

Thanks for the interview link. That WAS priceless. As Davy says, "Is good for me!"

This guy's game is great to watch. Impeccably fast recovery, perfect balance, level swings, absolutely still head. Very smart at hitting the flattest -- but safest -- shot he can from whatever position he's in. You can also see him get a little tight at some crucial moments, but if he ever gets a big win or two he might find a little more belief in his game.

I could not agree with you more. I honestly think he hits a cleaner ball than Agassi did outside of the return.

He is one of many pros that swear the O3 tech works for them. another is Ashley Harkeroad. they claim that they get just as much power but much more control from these rackets. I tried several O3 rackets but i felt like i lost more control not gain it...

Good god how can there be so much confusion in this thread. The guy had a 16 main pattern and is now using an 18 main. Hes got only one of them and thus has used it in every match. Im sure he has about 10 of the old 16 main ones as backup. Im not sure how some of you manage to even use a computer.

Folks this is discussed in the Pro Player Rackets and Gear. You're talking about it in the wrong section; go read about the discussion there. He actually changed rackets!

I was thinking the same thing. It was so obvious to me what Davydenko meant that I was confused as to why there was so much confusion here. And I don't even speak Russian. ;)

I agree. I think he is talking about the Ozone Pro Tour.

All confusion should have subsided very quickly. I clearly stated he was using the ozone pro tour, and posted pics on the first page.

You cannot get any more obvious :).
