Did Federer contribute enough to Davis Cup compared to Nadal?

Seriously, is Federer too Swiss for Switzerland?

he's played twice the amount of matches than Rafa has.

The problem with this comparison is that Rafa can skip the first round (he's done that most years), the second round, the semis and Spain will still most likely win them. And when he then finally plays in the final or semi, one match will often be enough as the rest of the Spanish team will win their respective matches.

Most of the time Fed plays, he needs to win three matches.
That a vaaaast difference

Nadal's Davis Cup winning years... 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011

2004
Year: won 4, lost 3, missed 4 singles matches

2008
Year - won 3, lost 0, missed 5 singles matches. Rd1 and Final dnp

2009
Year - won 4, lost 0. Missed Qf and Sf

2011
Year - won 6, lost 0. Missed Qf

Every year he won the DC he missed or lost plenty of matches. In 2008 he didn't play in the final at all and in 2009 he didn't play in the quarterfinal or semifinal at all.

He has avoided about 15 ties which weren't on clay and in all of his time he's only played 3 hard court and 1 carpet matches.

Is Steeb better than Wawrinka? Wawrinka is now a major winner, for goodness sake. Even back in 2010, he could beat Murray at the US Open.

I could be wrong, but from my memory, top players constantly skipped Davis Cup ties. Those were the times when you needed solid players outside top 10 or 20 who could win some matches in the absence of top players and Steeb was a solid player. It's good that a lot of top players represent their country in DC nowadays, but DC was really a secondary events which didn't occupy the priority a lot of top players back in the days.

One is enough when you can win the singles Gold. It is for others that the advice is: try, try, till you succeed.

Great Nadal succeeds the first time, and then gives a chance to others by not playing.
Like the WTF which he is still trying to win, despite having won a slam for (what?) nine years in a row ?

Shows how tough the WTF is. The undisputed GOAT Nadal has not been able to win it yet. :)

Didnt he buy pizza for the squad one year? Maybe some donuts?

I have no confirmation on what carb-based foods Nadal bought for his teammates.
