Did you think Djoker would have had a much better season then he did?

After last years domination, I must admit, I didn't see him following it up with only ONE slam this year.. I thought he would have managed 2 at the very least

Me too, but I'm not surprised either, it's a bit too much to ask from a player to have 2 years like that year. Also, after US '11 he was dead for the rest of the season.

Wouldn't be surprised is Andy wouldn't get any close to a single GS in '13 if you ask me, despite him looking very promising now.

When he won AO I thought he had a chance at RG (eliminated that thought during clay season), never thought he would win Wimbledon again, and USO I thought he, fed, or Murray would win. So I thought he would have at least 2, but if I had seen 3 or 1 I wouldn't have been surprised.

He also didn't dominate Rafael in Melbourne like he did in all the '11 finals he played with him.

Nah, his level was insane last year. Every go for broke shot would go in, every corner shot would find its mark. It's impossible to replicate. Besides, his results were good. 1 slam, lost to king of clay in FO final, lost to 7 time wimby winner in the semis, loses to Murray in the final.

Djoker didn't win 3 slams this year but he did make 3 slam finals which is still amazing. He just came up short in 2 of those finals - and I think he'll win more next year.

When you really analyse, Djokovic could've easily lost AO too so basically he may have had a slamless year, but overall it wasn't too bad,(pathetic by his 2011 standards though.).
Well,Djokovic is not Federer so... :)

Making finals doesn't mean squat if you can't manage to win them. Nadal had a sh*tty year last year, but he made final after final after final, losing them all. Nadal then had an even worse year this year, hasn't played a match since June, and will be out for 6+ months with injury. All making all of those finals did was set him up for a massive failure this year. They didn't help him one bit.

Oh,and how come noone is proclaiming doom and gloom for Cvac's career after having a year very similar to Nadal's last year? If Nadal hadn't choked by missing that easy backhand at the AO,Cvac would have gone slamless this year.

Only one player in the open era has followed up a three-slam year with another multiple-slam year. That player is Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic is not Roger Federer, so I did not expect him to have another multiple-slam year.

He's had lapses in concentration and a lot less luck than 2011. For example, the conditions at the USO didn't favour him as much as 2011, and the better play, at least for awhile, of Federer and Nadal stopped him at some key tournaments.

I really believe he could sweep the clay season if he could figure out how to keep his footing on that surface. He precision game worked well there in 2011, and could again.

It was a puzzling year. I can't figure out what has happened, really. Only the real insiders in his entourage know.

I think next year will be different for everybody.

Winning the Australian Open 2011 and 2012
Winning in I.W. 2011, SF in 2012
Winning in Miami 2011 and 2012
Missing the Monaco Masters in 2011, Final lost clearly to Nadal.
Winning Madrid in 2011, failling to do the same in 2012 but on different conditions.
Winning Rome in 2011, loosing the final in Rome in 2012, not as bad as in Monaco though.
SF in Paris in 2011...final in 2012 lost to Nadal ( in 2011 he probably would've beat Nadal on Paris clay seeing what happened then in Madrid and Rome ).
Winning Wimbledon in 2011, loosing to Federer in another clear defeat similar to the ones vs. Nadal on clay.
Winning Rogers Cup in '11 and '12
Loosing the Cinci final in '11 and '12
Winning the US in '11 and losing the final in '12 but I'm pretty sure that in a way, his North American hard court season was 99% the same as 2011, the difference was made by those 2 match points saved v. Federer in the SF and that Nadal was a much easier victim on this surface anyway ( would've beat him in 2011-2017 in the US Open finals ). Really not a decisive difference between August-September '11 and '12.
In a way, Nadal was way more dangerous on clay in '12 than '11, Federer was miles ahead in '12 than he was '11 ( till the closing stages of the year, when he won Basel, Paris, London Masters ).

Clearly he could've done better in '12, but both Rafa and Roger made progress.

I thought he would defend his Australian Open which he did. However pre season I thought he had a good shot to win RG, but that was mostly based on Nadal's very poor 2011 (for his standards) play on clay. Once I saw Nadal back in his clay form I knew Novak wouldnt win the French this year. Wimbledon I never thought he would win again. U.S Open I thought a number of guys had a shot. So all things considered, not too surprising.

I still think Nadal should've won the Aussie Open marathon.
I knew that match gave Nadal a renewed confidence in himself when it comes to being able to beat Djokovic again. And he he beat Djokovic two times in a row leading into the French Open, so I knew Nadal would beat Djokovic at the French Open.
Wimbledon surprised me, because I thought Djokovic was probably gonna win it. I also felt Murray had a great chance too.
The US Open, I thought for sure Djokovic would win it.

Thats not great if you consider what Djoker was like last year in finals. No doubt he dropped a step down in that regard. Disappointing IMO

I seriously see Nole winning 8 Slams out of a possible 16 when his career comes to an end.

At least get to 10 Nole. :(

I think Nole's here to stay. He'll come back a more determined player in 2013. Djokovic is a great champion and he may just get to double digits. So relax ,take the night off, its not all doom and gloom, just seems that way on TW. ;)

I thought Djoker had a breakout year in 11 but repeating it is a mountainous job. Anyways, getting to the finals of 3 and winning one is validation enough.

Federer being the exception, it's hard to foresee anyone in the foreseeable future to do that feat again. Wilander had that one year then he was almost done with slam winning before finally retiring. Djok can definitely win again but not quite the way as he did in 11.

Nope, not really. He expended so much effort last year - the likes of which you can't keep up year after year.

When Federer was doing it he was doing it without nearly as much physical effort. This is one of the key the benefits of being able to end points much quicker than Djokovic (assuming you're not missing too much).

While Djokovic has continued to surprise me with his general mental toughness in longer matches I think the drive he had last year isn't quite there.. and the cumulative effect on the body of playing how he did in 2011 can't be completely recovered from in the off-season no matter how hard you try. The last few months of 2011 saw him troubled with a few niggling injuries - so his off-season recovery would not have been quite as productive as if he'd simply needed some R&R before getting back into pre-season conditioning.

How these guys manage their off-time is super important and few seem to manage it as efficiently as Federer and Nadal who generally both come back from breaks roaring and playing great tennis.

Just goes to show that it's not as easy as it seems to win slams year after year like others have done (i.e. Fed). Anyone can have an amazing year if they train hard and everything goes right, but not everyone can do it year after year as easily as those who are true masters of their sport.
