Djokovic and ST

If Djokovic became a Nike player, I would be forced to start rooting for him. I'm not exactly sure what style shirts he would wear but you'd have to do something... Does Nadal go back to Sleeveless? Does Federer start wearing crews and Djokovic wear Polos? I have a feeling if Djokovic idolizes McEnroe and Sampras that he would want to follow in their footsteps by going to Nike. This would be great for Nike as they'd have a 3rd line to do which means more styles and perhaps a 3rd and completely new shoe to market.

So he DOES get FREE shoes from adidas. Hope that settles that long debate.

I hope to hell nike doesn't get djokovic. It's quality is so pathetic compared to the white, pure, holy clothing Nole is wearing now. Also have you seen nadal's shirts? Always drenched in sweat in 5 minutes, forcing him to wear about 20 shirts a match. Just piles them up on his chair during the game lol

That's because Nadal wears tight clothing LOLOL

I didnt know ST was in such bad shape. I think Novak just made the move to Tachini because the $$$ were right at the time.

I think he will go to the highest bidder when it comes time for contract negotation time. Nike has deeper pockets so that would be my guess.

When it's all said and done, he's still w/ ST. I can see Djoker fulfilling his contract and I'm sure he has a bailout clause if ST can't pay him. Adidas is probably willing to do anything to keep him, but after getting dropped, would you go back? So, the big bad Swoosh would SEEM to be this next likely employer in 9 years.

Why would Nike sign him when his 33?

Novak and Nike will NEVER happen.

What's stopping ST from just... releasing the merchandise on time?

^ Manufacturing and distribution problems.

They can't afford (any small company) to hold overstock.. as most retailers will pay or get paid only if a certain number of items are sold. So, in this case overhead goes way up IF they don't sell. Risk/Reward.. Supply/Demand.

Distribution is an issue as well, as they probably don't have the necessary shipment or receiving centers that Nike and Adidias have.

The problem is basically keeping their books and credit-lines (with merchants and distributors) balanced while trying to maintain overhead/expenses.

The company is an absolute joke, at least in the US. His French Open apparel was hardly sold at all. The company only has itself to blame for their woes. When you dress the most dominant guy on tour, you better have it available to the public the day he starts wearing it, not a month later or worse almost not at all. How can a company fail to deliver on what should be their most basic job, especially a company like this that has been around and dressed #1 players for decades, inexcusable, but justified(their woes).

Why is ST charging more $$$. As if his line wasn't overpriced already. No good line should be over 50 bucks.

Wow $110 for a polo is a bit steep! I know Novak is #1 in the world and all the kids will want to dress like him...but still ST just doesn't have the curb appeal of Nike or Adidas so I don't think they are going to have success with reaching this generation of kids...especially at $110 a pop.

So the Chinese businessman who now owns ST doesn't know how to get a Chinese factory to mass-produce Djokovic apparel and distribute them in the US in a timely manner?

Adidas could snatch him but they would be forced to drop other players in consequence of that in order to raise the necessary funds.

Murray is locked with adidas for another three years he's staying put for the time being.

Looks like it.

Unfortunately, instead of being 'swallowed' up by a competitor, Sergio Tecchini probably fell into the hands of an investor/group of investors looking to make a profit by selling the company off in 10years.

If they had been acquired by a rival company, they would instantly have access to distribution centers and manufacturing hubs. Plus, a managerial team with experience and know-how in the business.

This acquisition was a step-back for ST.

Actually it is Turkish factory and could be the problem...

We know this how? Perhaps they have a significant pool of money waiting for the right opportunity to come along... as I imagine any company with a strategic plan would. That aside, where a good opportunity comes along they would find a way to make it happen, it's just good business.

The amount of money required to sponsor a tennis player is actually relatively modest in comparison to football/basketball/rugby teams where merchandise sells like hot cakes compared to tennis clothing and so is a much bigger earner for the partners involved.

Could that explain the lack of consistency in sizing of his shirts and shorts as well?

Well, if you want to hear my personal view on it I would say - I don't think so. I think that it is a management issue i.e. the problem has first and last name. Turkey has one of the best textile (and food btw) industries in the world. I am pretty sure the bottleneck is not in Turkey. Also, Chinese ownership and Italian management sounds like bad idea to me :)

I like Djoker's hats, go to TW, in stock 10/1.

Sure they will be.

Either way, not going to be doing me much good by then anyway, so off to another brand.

A TW competitor has some of the slick looking ST nightime Djoker polos (tw has none)....no large though.

Off to another brand.

This company really screwed up. For them to not have a flood of merchandise ready to go with Djokers star rising is sad.

Because Sergio Tacchini is no longer the same company as back in their heyday in the '70's-80's. That Italian company no longer exists. It went bankrupt in 2007. A businessman in Hong Kong bought the rights to the brand name "Sergio Tacchini" so now it's a completely different company, just using the same brand name. Just like how Donnay is no longer a Belgian company because they went bankrupt a while back. The brand name "Donnay" is now licensed by two brothers in New York so now they are producing completely different racquets under the brand name "Donnay", but it has nothing to do with the original Belgian company Donnay.

If you were Adidas, you would want to give him all the free shoes that he wants as it's free advertising for Adidas. Lots of people will buy Adidas shoes because they see Djokovic wearing them and Adidas didn't even have to pay him for all that free marketing. :)

No wonder their designs have dragons and origamies and crap. No Italian influence anymore.

I'd say those Tacchini shirts that Sampras wore in the early 90's, like the "Archer" were far worse and those were Italian.

Makes sense, still doesn't explain why they spend millions to sponsor a #1 player, but then are unable to get the product to market as plenty of people would love to buy it, counterproductive.

Bad planning and logistics, and probably also because of tight cash flow since they are a small company that's barely profitable.

The other factor is, many sporting chains - who are the ticket to success in the sporting goods world - wont stock items unless they can see the range a year ahead, see evidence of an appropriate marketing plan in their market etc. Get any of those things wrong and you may have awesome production capabilities and sponsored players but they wont deal with you on a significant level.

Well, it probably is in Sergio Tacchini's owner's original hopes/plan to sell the company to a bigger company like Nike or Adidas. Will that happen? that's the chance he took for purchasing a bankrupting company in the first place. But, he was smart to sign Djokovic back in 2009.
But what I want to know is why the hell did Adidas drop him?? The guy has been in the top 5 the past 4 years or so. And he's he's been improving each year. Stupid move by Adidas, but obviously they're trying to court him back by giving him free shoes. And like somebody pointed out, Adidas is the big winner for supplying him shoes that consumers want to buy especially now that he's on a roll. Djokovic should actually demand that Adidas pay him to wear their shoes, imo.
It would be nice to see him in Nike gear, but that remains to be seen.

They will be already, there is little doubt about that. People of his calibre simply don't do stuff for free shoes - their management wouldn't work them if they wouldn't take sage advice on stuff like that.

ST distribution is ridicolous, u find a shirt in a city center shop sold to 60 euros and just behind the corner u find a ST Outlet shop sale same shirt at 20 Euros !! Ridicolous, i have a friend own a sport shop that is totally pissed off with ST.
They even selling now the archives shirt, yes the shirt that were abandoned in the warehouse since 80's and left in the ST museum in Biella.... remember the Mac line ? Yes that ones ! I bought one, quite old but the cotton is still nice and the design is fantastic.
It is sad that a company so nice is finishing so miserably...

In the article you see many sports sites complaining that the product wasn't available or was on a limited basis, so I don't think it's the sites not wanting to stock it, which would make no sense even if they couldn't see a year in advance, they can see now that the #1 guy wears it, and people want to buy what he wears, supply and demand.

You CLEARLY have no clue what you're talking about. Nadal changes his shirt once at the MAX in a 5 set match, if anything it's adidas with the crappy clothing. I always had to change shirts 3 times when i used to wear adidas. Nike is just much more comfortable and stylish and their shoes are a million times more comfortable than adidas. You look on tour so many more people wearing nike than adidas, it's not even close.

I believe it was in Miami this year Nadal had a stack of sweaty shirts at the end of the final and that wasn't even best of 5. It was for sure Miami, the green shirt.
