Stunning milestone reached today. Congrats to our guy...

Return to No.1 from last year's disastrous beginning culminating in the Cecchinato loss, is quite something.

Congrats to Djoko fans.

Personally I want Djokovic to beat Thiem here, as Thiem is the bigger threat to Djokovic at RG.

Yea he needs to beat Thiem way more Roger at this point. Thiem is maybe playing the best he ever has right now and is very dangerous with RG coming up. He took a set off him last year when he was playing very sub-par. He needs to test his game against him now, hopefully with a win.

Exactly. Federer isn't the threat to Djokovic at RG, it's Thiem. And Thiem is red hot right now, especially after the way he beat Nadal a little while back. In a way, Thiem is a measuring stick for Novak's chances to complete that second Nole Slam, and playing him in Madrid will help him to gauge where he stands against him and what he needs to get the job done in Paris.

In fact, facing Thiem and Nadal here is good for him. Those are his biggest road blocks, and with Rome still to happen, Djokovic has plenty of time still to figure things out.

Yes, this is what I think as well. Madrid really isn't that big in the grand scheme except to add another big clay title because it plays nothing like RG but at the same time, Novak needs to get some momentum going and he really needs a big win here heading into Rome. But yea he definitely needs to face Thiem here.

I am sure we will get to see that match, I will be very surprised if somehow Federer gets past Thiem here. I know its Federer and he shouldn't be underestimated, but he was match points down yesterday, and honestly I don't know if he really wants to push harder, since his goal is just to win a few matches and keep that competitive edge heading into RG and especially the grass. Thiem will be uber confident also, having beaten Federer in IW, so Djokovic playing against this Thiem is just what the doctor ordered.

Yea I never underestimate Federer but he is a real underdog in this one with Theim playing like he is on his best surface, and him having a long match yesterday and barely scraping out the win.

A little bit frustrated Djokovic didn't get to play today, because he finished very strong in that tie-break yesterday. But, the other side of the coin is that if he is going to play Thiem and Nadal back to back, then ideally having a day off to mentally focus on the task at hand maybe the right thing. And a win here in Madrid, especially beating those two IMO puts Djokovic in the driver's seat heading into Rome, which we know is his best clay event.

Yea I kind of wanted him to play today to maintain his rhythm and I think he would have handled Cilic in two sets, considering he isn't playing his best and clay is his worst surface. This would have given him a little more confidence heading into that SF. At the time, if he is going to play Thiem and potentially Nadal back to back, maybe the day off is not that bad after all.

Exactly. Got to take the positive out of it. At the end of the day, a Thiem - Nadal gauntlet is possible at RG, and he would have a day off before the Thiem match there. So consider this a dress rehearsal. ;)

Manly, but not warm.

They know they are in the same boat as status in life, but now that Nadal has realised that Djokovic is eating up in his legacy, and Djokovic has realised that they had warm relationship and Nadal was friendly because Novak was far away from him, the things have changed.

Nadal doesn't abide from the Machiavellian rule of keeping your friends close, but your enemies closer.

Congrats to Novak.
200th top 10 win
3rd Madrid title and 9th clay masters title, in Nadal era
33rd Masters, ties with Rafa

Huge win going towards RG.
Then proceeds to lose early in Rome... Gives the next gen more confidence by losing to them in Rome ...
