Yeah, I'm concerned about him overplaying also with mixed. But maybe playing mixed is his way of practicing. I'm sure if he encounters a grueling singles match, he will pull out of mixed in order to recover properly.
It happened in ATP Mallorca five weeks ago in a diplomatic form.
As Wimbledon was approaching Djokovic doubles partner became 'unable to play due to minor injury'.

At times I just feel like you guys sound like broken records. I know everyone here is a Nole fan and only wish the best for him but these constant questioning about his decisions prior to big tournaments are eyeroll worthy.

People were similarly dumbfounded by Nole's decision to play Belgrade 2 the week before RG and questioned his decision citing overplaying before RG. He played the tournament which was important to him being a home one and won it followed by winning RG 2 weeks later.

Comes Wimbledon, the week before it started people were once again questioning Nole's decision to play some double on grass and predicted fatigue and whatsnot. He played doubles, reached the final and went on to win Wimbledon 2 weeks later.

Here we are once again with people questioning the man's decision to play the Olympics because it's apparently could jeopardize his chances for the US Open. I mean a tournament 3 weeks apart from the us open will somehow cause him enough fatigue to make him unable to play the us open in optimal form. I mean come on.

I mean I get people are fans here and wish him the best but if you truly feel that way then one would hope to see Djokovic do what makes him feel happy and in this particular case it's representing his country and winning a gold medal. The Olympics isn't just some meaningless thing for Djokovic unlike what it is for the fans GOAT debates and gloating.

Sometimes I get the impression that people want Nole to achieve what makes them happy(CYGS) then what makes him happy(Gold at this particular time). It doesn't matter how important Gold is to Djokovic, what matters is the prospect of CYGS not being threatened even if Gold has to be sacrificed despite it being of such importance to their favorite player.

I simply don't get it.

Starting tomorrow, he will have to play two matches a day for 3 days in a row. Assuming he wins of course.

I wish the doubles match was before the singles, because the way it's now he'll have to play his singles matches in sunny conditions.

Love watching what Novak eats.
Does he have any time to eat?
It looks like he is sleeping 8h per day, playing tennis 4h per day and posing to photos 12h per day.

Hopefully people who don't get the meaning of Gold for your country(which says more about those people anyway) can see the emotion by Djokovic(and rest of the Serbians) for a fellow athlete at getting the gold and why it would mean getting that gold for him more then any $hite slam.

Or to put things into perspective 1 chance at a gold for 16 chances at a slam

I can honestly say I haven't watched a single point from this year's event so far and I'm not sure I will. As much as I hope Novak goes on to win the gold medal, tennis in the Olympics just doesn't do anything for me at all.
Difficult watching matches played at 3 and 4 in the morning but I did watch the entirety of the Struff match and have to say he played really well, better than he ever did during Wimbledon (save for maybe the Anderson match). And Struff was at his very best.

This new world looks at nationalism like it's a bad thing. Very unfortunate.

And yet Tsits said on Tuesday that he could still win the final over Djok!

Well that can't happen now! Stef's trying to salvage something w/ the MxD's playing w/ Sakkari! It's like the old days when top players did the doubles for spending $$! ;)

Davidovich Fokina played really well and came away with a breadstick for his efforts. Djokovic is in exceptional form, folks.
The question is: isn't it too early?
He needs to find his peak form in New York, not now.

The Olympics is a super valuable tournament for his legacy: he would be the first male player ever who has won *every* event of significance in tennis. Even the great female tennis players can't quite boast of the same since they don't prioritise Tier 1 WTA events the way the men prioritise Masters 1000 events. Furthermore, this is Djokovic: Ten years after he began dominating the sport, we know by now that peaking in July doesn't mean he won't peak again in September.

Do you think he was bluffing saying 'don't know, it's 50/50' after Wimbledon when asked about his Olympics participation?
Doesn't matter: he showed up and you can see through his comments how much it means to him. It's also true that the Olympics is valuable to his legacy regardless of what he thinks.

But you must admit he is risking a bit. He put himself in a must-win position, there will be a trouble if he loses gold in Tokyo.

Absence in Tokyo and completing CYGS would be perceived as a flawless GS run, but losing gold in Tokyo and US Open win would be remembered as a missed chance.
Another scenarios?
Tokyo win and US Open loss: people will blame Olympics for a New York failure. "He shouldn't have wasted energy for Olympics"
Tokyo loss and US Open loss: the same. People will blame Olympics for a New York failure. "He shouldn't have wasted energy for Olympics"
Absence in Tokyo and US Open loss: nobody will blame lack of Olympics for CYGS fail.

Aren’t we demanding way too much? He has a 3 slam year at 34. Neither Fed nor Nadal came even close to that. If he just went home today this would still be remembered among the great seasons in tennis history

Nah, absence from Tokyo while completing the CYGS will still be seen as a missed chance, maybe even moreso than if he wins the Open and loses the Gold.

I don't get that at all. Djokovic always plays tournaments between Wimbledon and the US Open, usually two tournaments. He will either do that again or not play after the Olympics until the Open.

What they may say is that he missed a chance to get at least one of the two.

Olympics years can be hard on the body, considering his age and the fact he played Rome, RG, 2 Belgrades, Mallorca and Wimbledon.

But I guess he still looks fresh enough, so imma have to trust his calls on this one.

The question is - do you think his 2 coaches do not know when the USO is?

Apart from that - an annual peak can be manipulated and maintained anywhere from 4-8 weeks. These guys are not bodybuilders to peak for their Mr Universe competition over 2 weeks. This is a totally different sport.

Take Charlie Francis for instance (and I have posted this on TTW already in the past)

Follow the competition periods (yellow) and see how there are winter competition period, early summer period, and then the peak performance over July and August with recovery and an absolute peak for the WC.

This is the basic stuff that every good coach knows and is ALWAYS worked backwards from the most important day of the year all the way to GPP.

Novak firing in all cylinders except his first serve percentage couldve been higher
Could it though? Kei is relatively short player. Novak can hit slice wide second serves and still get by easily.

Today was impeccable I think. If he faces Zverev then I agree, he will need to hit 65% first serves. Zverev is dangerous.

Some people are acting as if Nole should just sit down until the US Open.
I feel he’ll play cincy. He’s got 2 weeks to rest after this before cincy. He can fine tune things in cincy and then gets another week off before the us open.

Novak is in great form and high confidence so I think playing again before the us open is good idea just to keep the momentum going provided he’s doing well physically still.

Also for people saying the Olympics are a distraction to Nole's quest for the CYGS, wasn't it his win in the Davis Cup in 2010 for his country that spurred on Nole 2.0 and his insane 2011 season?

Now Imagine what winning an Olympic gold for his country would do for Djokovic's confidence. Dude would be feeling fulfilled and untouchable going to NY.
I agree completely with this.
