Just to put into perspective, Djokovic missed FIVE Masters this season, and even if he also skipped Torino he would have still been YE #1. If it wasn't for lolympics and IW being rescheduled, does anyone think he would have still missed all the Masters in North America? As it stands I don't see him as an underdog in the long run by any means even though he and Medvedev could switch positions sometimes throughout next season.

Both Roddick and Shriver backed Sampras' claim on the Tennis Channel. Roddick said, "Yeah, listen, the only thing left that's even up for it [meaning debate], is the total slam count. But outside of that specific statistic, Novak owns the rest of them."
Do we have a video of that ? Roddick has been VERY pro Novak over the past few tears.

Rather silly stat.
In 2 RR matches, Djoko hit 40 winners. 24 were aces.

While the surface promotes big serving, not even Med/Zverev/Hubi have more aces than baseline winners thus far.

Against Rublev, Djoko had 5 baseline winners and 14 aces.

Servebot + returnbot. Deadly combo!

Djokovic is the oldest ever Year-end No. 1 (34y 7m)

If he wants to be the oldest ever No. 1 he will need to be at the top in March 2024 or later as currently Federer keeps the record (36y 10m).

Very interested in seeing how this tournament ends for him. He's played some really good matches at the YEC in recent years and not won the title. This year, yet again, he's playing really good matches at the YEC.

He seems full of confidence!

If he loses against Zverev he will still be 2400 points ahead of Medvedev even if he wins the tournament.
If Djokovic beats Zverev and loses to Medvedev, he will be 2800 points ahead of Medvedev.
If Djokovic wins over Medvedev, then he will be a whopping 3800 points ahead. Next two matches are really important, not to mention possibly tying Federer fro YECs.
The 3800 points ahead would likely get him to Wimbledon as continuous No. 1 especially if he plays AO which I think it likely.

They said only vaxed will be able to play. So no Novak in AO. Will also lose No1 soon after...

You're assuming Medvedev will hold up to the pressure of being seeded #1 at AO if Nole doesn't go "down under!" Heavy is the head that wears the crown! :notworthy: ;):D:happydevil:

Not really, Novak still is confirmed for 357 weeks after the final`, BUT now both Zverev and Medvedev can pass him after the AO
While it may be true, that also means that points are more evenly distributed between Med and Zed, which means it will be harder for either to actually hit #1. The more even everyone else's distribution, the longer Novak is #1. For instance, it would be very bad if Med won the USO, WTF, then the AO.

I guess Zverev winning is good news for Djoko's guaranteed weeks at #1?
Excluding ATP Cup and AO their ranking points are:

1. Djokovic - 8875
2. Zverev - 7055
3. Medvedev - 6940

Excluding ATP Cup in order to get the #1 Zverev would need to win AO with Djokovic not reaching 4th round and Medvedev would have to win it with Novak not reaching 3rd round. I'd say Zverev winning is better for Djokovic in theory as Medvedev is more likely to win AO and points will be more spread. That makes it harder to stay #1 just after the AO, but easier to reclaim it in the long run.

Looks like Lolympics is where he messed up. Should've gone to Canada/Cinci instead. Let's hope he plays (and wins :)) AO, as there's almost no points to defend until Rome (IW + Miami + MC + Madrid). Although doubtful he even goes to US.

He is done with US. No reason to go there. Hope he gets vaccinated. Who knows, maybe other slams also request vaccine in order to play, so it will be stupid not to play AO and to get vaccine later into season. And i guess no way of him missing other slams if they also require proof of vaccination.
A true rookie response! Sorry but Novak is not done regardless ;)
