Djokovic poised to overtake Nadal

Interesting read, throughly enjoyed it.

Djoker has a shot at number 2 but he needs to win this and that goes through Murray, who I picked as the winner.

Ranking wise, this WTF is goingto be very interesing to watch.

Djoker has about as much chance doing that as Rafa has regaining the #1 year end spot.

Djoker is defending champ, while Nadal has never gone past semis or never won an indoors event( maybe he has won one, cant remember).
The chances dont look the same at all Bud.

Madrid 2005. Nadal doesn't have to win the tournament to stay number 2. He just has to win 2 matches. And I don't remeber Djokovic defending a title, especially one that is so important.

Nadal won the Madrid Masters in 2005 and made the final of Paris in 2007 and reached the final of Rotterdam this year.

okk... he has been top 2 since 2004 and has won only one indoors title.
It's not his favorite place to play... therefore? less chance to win here, now.

Nadal was nowhere near the top 10 in 2004, and finished the year ranked 51. 25th July 2005 is when Nadal first became number 2 in the world, and apart from a brief period where he dropped down to number 3 from 17th August 2009 until 13th September 2009, he has been in the top 2 ever since.

Thx for the correction, since 2005.

Djoker has never defended a title, and he has never won 2 consecutive titles in back-to-back tournaments...until he recently when he won Basel and Paris. So he's slowly overcoming these hurdles. I think that his mental toughness is getting a little stronger and these back-to-back wins certainly helped toughen it up.

The only thing that makes me doubt that he can defend his title is the fact that his 2 wins were very recent and all that tennis could prove to be a slight disadvantage, compared to the field.

Djokovic will probably defend his title but it wont be enough to catch Nadal in the rankings for 2009. Given that he hasnt reached a slam final this year he wouldnt be a worthy #2 either really.

Do the numbers please. If Djokovic defends his title (and you believe he will), then he will easily overtake Nadal in rankings in early 2009, although Nadal will probably get back to No.2 after Roland Garros or Wimbledon.

Not now but It will happen at the first months of next year.

Though I doubt that Djoker will be able to remaing no.2 for long.

I don't see how those who think Novak will take #2 here have figured that out. Whatever result he gets here, he'll have to stop counting his Halle points, which puts him 1,445 points behind Nadal. Effectively the only way Novak takes the #2 spot is by winning the tournament, including every one of his round robin matches (something he didn't do last year), and for Nadal to lose every one of his round robin matches (something he's never done).

Novak's best chance to take the spot will be at the Australian Open next year.

I think if Novak can play at the Grand Slams like he's been doing lately, I could see him winning 3-5 slams.

Anyone that thinks Rafa will go winless here is nuts.

The one he was supposed to win today (Soderling), is now by the wayside. Both Davy and Djoker have beaten Nadal consistently this fall. But I actually think that Nadal might take Davy, but definitely lose to Djoker.

Is it still possible?

Is what still possible? I'm assuming you mean Djokovic as #2.

Djokovic can overtake Nadal if he wins tomorrow and wins the competition, I believe. I think he must do both to surpass Nadal.

At this point, it simply doesn't matter. His year's shot to hell and everyone knows it, and Djokovic has earned his place in the sun this Fall season. 'Don't know what happened to him with Soderling today...didn't see the match. But he's lining up for a slam, I think (though he and the others do need to watch out for Del Potro...wow, a real up-and-comer).

For Nadal, thankfully, there's always next year!

That would be fantastic. Then Murray can win the Aussie Open and send Nadal to #4 or lower.

I think Federer or Djokovic is winning the Australian Open personally, though I would give Murray, Del Potro, Soderling, and Davydenko an outside shot to win it too. No way I see Nadal defending his title there, the only question is how far will he be able to go.

It would be great to see Davydenko get one. Even with his quality results at slams, they still don't do his career justice.

Honestly, I don't see Djokovic winning the Aussie. He won the Masters Cup last year and went on to completely wilt under the Aussie sun. If I remember correctly the year he won it he got almost all night matches.

Not only that, but lucked out getting monoFed in the semis!

I would still be a fan of the man, not the number. ROFL at the obsession with numbers and stats around here. Is that really why many of you like Fed?

Can't wait until Nadal rebounds. It oughta send a bunch of haters in cardiac arrest! Lol!
