I just like this team tennis format. Being able to see the reactions and interactions between the players is quite interesting. I think we should have more team events spread out during the year.

Well, I was actually there and it was fantastic. If it is fake then they re all great actors. I just find it impossible to imagine that young players like Stefanos, playing in front of Nadal and Federer and a huge crowd, are going to be capable of playing to a script and deliberately losing.

Is the crowd mostly Swiss? They sounded very loud. I thought the Swiss were quiet boring reserved people.

Nobody in their right mind is counting Laver Cup in head to head. It is an exhibition. Players don't even play three sets.

I am relieved now. Thanks.

It is fun, but not really "legit" yet. You can see the players are acting in a play, trying to make the audience believe in the meaning of the event. But hopefully it will get some real stature before backing drops out. When the current faces leave, if it does not have any clout yet, it will just disappear. Which I think would be sad. There is potential in this.

Some celebration/reaction during the LC looked a bit exaggerated/WWE to me.

It depends on what you compare it to. Have you seen the reactions from some of the more involved/tense/emotional player boxes (especially from skittish family members)? Is it much different? Now imagine that they're 'allowed' to cheer freely, as the Laver Cup does.

This year I did not. Of course with so many top 10 players on one side the outcome seemed baked in the cake so I needed Rafa & Roger to play dubs together again to get excited.

Also, some of the World team are juvenile in the pressers. Give me Khachanov, Rublev, Medvedev and Nishikori. Some fresh guys & new coaches.

Only Raonic conducted himself with grace and poise.

It's quite international - met someone coming from South Africa. But I imagine most of the day passes were bought by local people - French was the most common language I overheard, then English and probably Italian after that. I was surprised to not hear much German.

The atmosphere was incredible, honestly. I get why people are doubtful about the team concept - the crowd was cheering for Sasha in the end match but it was nothing like the atmosphere at the two Fed singles. I think there are different things they could do with the format but I guess at the moment they think it's a winner.

I don't want to spam the whole thread with "I was there" but when you are you realise people are talking nonsense on here sometimes, like players can't have normal human emotions. All these people saying "why was Rafa there?" - he was obviously having a great time. And got an amazing ovation from the crowd - he can't not have been moved by that, in Switzerland.

I've kinda slammed it (no pun intended) for being a glorified exo, but this year seemed much more serious about play and competition. So a much better year for sure.

Surprised that the crowd was not upset at Rafa and Kyrgios dropping out.
Wasn't Rafa scheduled to play Kyrgios? In any case, Kyrgios' withdrawal was suspicious,

just saw 7-8 minutes of it on TV (intro+beginning of fedr vs kyrgios)... it looked so fake you'd believe it was some kind of wrestling (WW lucha libre stuff).

the unbearable ultrafake tone of the commentators didn't help either......
do they really believe ?... do they really believe that we believe ?

PS: now, don't get me wrong... i guess the idea of seeing many stars live can be cool for the spectators in the arena...... but please don't pretend it's anything el$e than a lucrative exo.

They obviously were upset but I think there was a general acceptance that he could easily have dropped out altogether.

The Kyrgios thing was weird - everyone was in the dark about it. From what I've picked up about the argument between Enquist and the McEnroes - they both had a point.

I am a fan, but I think they should do it every two years vs. every year. On the other hand, they want to maximize Fed/Nadal participation. I also think the "Europe" vs. "World" thing is not that great. I'd prefer to see them come up with a different team strategy. Europe dominates the top of the game by a long stretch. But, beyond that, I find it entertaining and fun to see those guys competing in as teams and helping each other out, etc.

If we don’t want LC matches in H2Hs, we should start to despise it, before it becomes more important than M1000s.

I have now learned to love the Laver Cup. The excitement. The lights and the acting. Borg the "Coach" sitting on the sofa saying absolutely nothing.
Need to add cheerleaders.
Laver Cup should replace the Australian Open.

As I've said before, a Blue Team and a Red Team would be a much better (but simpler) idea, not that the current tournament is bad in itself. Team layouts would have some restrictions on rank. Here's an example:

Blue Team (let's call it Team Borg)Red Team (how about Team McEnroe)
Team Captain -- BorgCaptain -- J-Mac
Vice-Captain -- EnqvistVice-Captain -- P-Mac
Player 1 (top 5 player) -- FedererPlayer 1 -- Nadal
Player 2 (top 5/top 10 player) -- MedvedevPlayer 2 -- Thiem
Player 3 (top 10 player) -- ZverevPlayer 3 -- Tsitsipas
Player 4 (top 20 player) -- IsnerPlayer 4 -- Monfils
Player 5 (top 20 player) -- GoffinPlayer 5 -- Schwartzman
Player 6 (top 30 player) -- WawrinkaPlayer 6 -- Kyrgios
Alternate -- SimonAlternate -- Tsonga

The higher cutoff for the ranking means that the alternates could also be top-quality players. I think a system that doesn't separate based on nationality would allow for more interesting teams.

i dont mind that but can i swap isner for monfils on the blue team, i can then happily support the blue team. also im trying to picture some of the red team players dealing with mcenroe. its weird because i do agree that the europe vs world format (esp if they keep just being n.america and australia) wont hold up much longer, but ive gotten used to certain players just being on the same team together with the same captain, that in my mind one seeing nadal, thiem, and titsipas with mcenroe is just weird, although the idea of nick and nadal on teh same team is hilarious.

That's just an example of how the players could be divided based on ranking. Those aren't my serious thoughts of good and bad Laver Cup teams.

This looks like a pretty good idea

Yes, Rafa received big ovations from the crowd:

The main issues is that it's completely lopsided in Europe's favour and ultimately the concept is meaningless. The Davis Cup has a long standing tradition and can help propel country's tennis - well that's the theory anyway. The WTF obviously is a culmination of the year's best (if they all play) and can decide YE#1.

Laver Cup should be an exhibition with lots or proceeds going to charity.

@Raul_SJ I agree with you completely, but the ATP must be out of their mind because Laver Cup results do now count in official H2H's! The Fed-Isner match is included now in their official H2H. It's appalling to me, but the ATP made the change this year.

See my post #108 above

At least LC does not count towards any ATP points.
For now.

Will Russians be placed on Team World? Or Europe?
Were there any Russians playing this year?

Yes. It's fun to see them together encouraging each other.
  • It's epic to see Nadal and Fed and Novak play together and support each other.
  • It's fascinating to hear Nadal coach Fed and vice versa.
  • It's cool to see the ATG's coaching the other and younger guys.
  • It's cool to see the Mac and Bjorn working w the teams.
All this stuff we could get nowhere/way else.

It's not really serious and the players enjoy it and express gratefulness to get out of the loneliness of the individual play.
