Do you have noisy balls?

Played with a guy last night who opened a new can of Prince 2 balls. Whenever I hit the ball, I heard a rattling sound. I thought it was my dampener or worse, something in my frame or handle.

It was actually something inside the ball which we could hear if we shook it close to the ear. ALL three of the balls had the same issue.

Is this deliberate? What's up with noisy balls?

Could be diamonds hidden in there, better cut 'em open and see. (More likely little pieces of rubber, I think I've noticed a little rattle before but never something I could hear when hitting a ball. That's a major rattle.)

My balls aren't noisy, they're fuzzy, and shaving the fuzz off of them is uncomfortable and takes a toll on my arm. Then, when i'm done, i can barely move as i'm too tired.

Yes, I am talking about tennis balls.

These are not my balls, so I cannot cut them open.

We have some Tretorn Z tour balls at practice (i still think we have them, not sure) and after a while of hard hitting, they would also rattle inside. Sounds a bit like a small rubber piece have fallen off. Could be from the moulding process too (if they're moulded in one piece, there might be a tiny protrusion of rubber, but i don't know).

At my HS yesterday, we were playing away at our rival school and every single ball in the entire box of new balls that they had had that rattling inside. We had no idea what it was and the coaches had to go get a brand new box.

What was the brand of these rattlin' balls? Dunlop seconds and Penn X-outs were notorious for this prob.

yes when people get within 12 feet of them, they need to put on ear plugs.

What quality control do these factories have?

Tennis balls are manufactured as two halves, which are then thermally bonded together. As you say, some rubber piece must have gotten cut off and fallen inside.

Had a set of these last summer, I think it was Penn's but don't remember for sure. Only happened that one time however.

Mine were all Wilsons. I still have a few and they still rattle.

If the balls are old (i'm trying really hard to be mature), the rubber may have vulcanized. Thus, upon contact, vulcanized rubber "shatters" resulting in particles inside.

Old balls are not much in demand.

I thought vulcanized means curing the rubber with sulphur for tires, etc., for strength?

I played with some Tretorn balls in '05 that were brand new and I could hear a bit of rubber rattle inside when I shook it. I asked the coach why they were all like this and he said the rubber dissolved round the inner-part of the ball over time and reseals it to keep it slightly bouncy. Not sure how or if it actually works but this might be a similar thing with the balls you hit with. Or maybe just a factory error, although the fact it happened in 3 separate units is unlikely given Prince's quality. Why not give them a call and ask?

Guy with the noisy balls showed up again last night. Same guy, same balls, but now no noise! If a piece had fallen off inside, how could it have become reglued again? It is a real mystery.

It could be one of two reasons"
1) the rubber is breaking from the inside
2) in the case of some pressurized balls or balls meant to last longer, they have small pellets that help maintain pressure
