Not being able to hear must be a curse and a blessing. A blessing because he wont hear annoying disturbances from the crowd, a curse because he cant hear the ball.

Just as a test, it would be interesting to play a match with earplugs or without being able to hear opposing shots, or even one's own. Of course, I've never played at a deeply competitive level, but being unable to hear the ball being struck could cost precious reaction time, which is critical. Again, kudos to him!

How do they know he's the first deaf player to reach a main draw? Maybe there was some dude earlier who was just really shy and never spoke to anyone.

Difficult to imagine playing without hearing the sound of your raquet!
Certainly Duckhee must have developed extra sensativity to feel impact of the ball! I bet that the fault of one of his senses, got the other ones more acute. His vision also could have developed to be faster in catching what's going on with the ball and with the opponent movement.
Also line ref calls should be a challenge at times. True they move the hand when ball is out, but not always you look there!
Kudos! Certainly a feel good story and certainly will be cheering this guy to get the best out of his carrer!

It's a pretty amazing story.

It was also featured on the BBC this morning, which gives it wider prominence.

What really annoys me is when he mentioned: "People made fun of me for my disability. They told me I shouldn't be playing".

I can only imagine the kind of people who would that kind of stuff to him. Why do so many people feel like that it's acceptable to be needlessly cruel?

I've been following him for awhile now. Really glad he's starting to break through. I focus a lot on just the sound of the ball when I play so I can't imagine not being able to hear. Would love to see this guy winning tour titles.

I’ve heard of him for some time but i didn’t know he hadn’t won an ATP main draw match before! Glad he’s now achieved a big milestone. I wonder what happens when he can’t hear the line umpires behind him calling the ball out on sidelines and his baseline?? What about when he returns, the two line umpires’s call behind him?

This is not to diminish Duckhee’s grit but this milestone is watered down by the fact that the last DA at this tournament is a horrendous #249. Duckhee has been in much tougher Challenger draws many many times.

Also, a shout out to Yannick Hanfmann, who has managed to play tennis at a level high enough to earn a college scholarship and now plays ATP level tennis despite serious hearing impairment.
