Andy Murray's 12-year reign as Britain's top player has come to an end for now with Kyle Edmund joining a list of greats including Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman, Jeremy Bates, Andrew Castle, Buster Mottram, Mark Cox, and Roger Taylor as British No 1.

Kyle also out with injury at the moment but expected to be fit in time for Indian Wells. Anyway, congrats to him for joining those other guys listed as British #1. Hopefully he can make good on it!

Congrats to Kyle but he’ll never kiss this trophy ;)

True but you know what the press are like. If they spot a gun to leap over the only question is,"how high?" ;)
It's like the way they announced Federer taking over from Rafa as #1 almost a week before it actually happened.

End of an era. Good for Kyle, he definitely seems like he's going to another level at just the right time rather than waiting till he's in his mid 20s like that idiot generation that came before. Physically looks great, surviving multiple five setters, and backing them up in Australian summer is no small thing, and his game should work very well on clay, so he's got to like his chances of clambering ever further up them rankings in the months ahead.

Current rankings show Andy at 21, Kyle 25. So this is premature. Andy is going to lose 500 point this week so next week he'll drop to around 31. Of course, by the time he comes back he'll have been out for so long he'll drop a lot more.

Andy will only have 360 points by the time the grass season comes along. The draw has been lopsided since 2012 when Rafa kept being sidelined with injury every year. Gone are the days when all we talked about was whether Rafa or Roger would be drawn against Andy or Novak.

By my calculation, Andy has about 1,170 more points to defend between now and the start of the grass season so if he doesn't play anything until then he will definitely fall out of the top #100. Just seems so surreal to contemplate! :(

Agassi dropped out of the top #100 and he made his way back to #1! It seems unlikely that Murray will do that but don’t give up hope!

Delpo has been grappling with that for a long time now. I remember him going down as far as #484. I was so cut up that Rafa went down to #5 when he returned in 2013 then #9 in 2017. That looks like nothing now. Fed also went down to #17 when he came back in 2017.

Hands up all those who now agree with Rafa that there should be a 2-year ranking system. ;)

Not convinced yet about his fitness. He seems to pick up an injury or an ailment on average every 4 or 5 matches. That's something he urgently needs to work on to improve his consistency and chance of winning titles to cement his new ranking.

@Mainad

All will depend on his return. It's not like he's really going to be number 100, if he can play he'll get wild cards and get back up.

In all honesty I'm skeptical he'll win slams, but I can see him playing top 10 again.

He will have protected ranking for a minimum of 6 months so he won't need any WCs.

If Andy Bo Bandy and Novak Noglutenvic ever come back to tennis (which for the sake of being rid of the pusher era lets pray not)...

Going to be some fun draws with them running around unseeded

How do you make that out? 4 March, the actual anniversary, falls on a Sunday this year.
Because a year has 365 days, 52 weeks and one day, so if januari 1st is a sunday, the next year it will be a monday, as 2018 isn't a leap year.

Unless the final was played on a saturday...

Edit, Dubai final is played on a Saturday. I am ********

Is tennis not popular in Britain? Why so few top players from a land that invented the sport practically?

Congrats to Kyle - I think that, with his recent AO semi final, he has earned the position, rather than just being granted it due to Murray's injury.

Also, nearly 12 consecutive years for Andy as British #1 - damn impressive achievement.

No offense, but that's because Nadal pretty much never has big time injuries, despite what Nadals fans like to claim.

Murray has an actual serious injury.

Wow I thought Perry would be no.1 for the longest but I don’t even know if players were ranked back then.

Back in Perry's day and right up to 1973 rankings were unofficial and usually estimated by a few tennis writers and commentators. In 1973 the newly formed ATP introduced the computerised rankings that we see today.
