I know that the top brands give players their clothes, shoes, and rackets, but do they also pay them to receive these items? I realize this sounds naive, but I was shocked to learn how much Federer will receive to wear Uniglo clothes even after he retires. How do you know what a player is being paid?

I would say some of the niche brands target a particular player like Foganini with his Italian brand. He would still be paid even if he drops out of the top 50 but it’s in the $100-200k range annually.

It’s a winner takes all world and Federer is a walking ATM.

Stan probably on $500k-$1m.

Young Zverev and Kgyrios in the $1-2m range.

Murray $2-3m

Novak $5m+

Rafa $7m

Fed $30m (think it will be a rotten deal for Uniqilo. No one will be that interested in what he wears in the commentary box, but at least they will have him for Tokyo 2020)

most players in the top 50 get some kind of pay whether it be win based or just a bonus for signing with them. Unless the player themselves tell you or the company releases it. its not public knowledge.
I mean you can't expect these guys to make a living just off prize money.

There's every chance he doesn't make it to Tokyo or otherwise is worn out from grass season. He's going to be going on 40 lol

More like an outside risk, but yes possible.

Let's say Fed plays three matches in Tokyo, how in the hell is three tennis matches at the Olympics in any way bringing in the kind of brand value to justify his reported salary? It's just insane if anyone thinks Federer appearing on TV in Uniqlo gear a few times in Tokyo time zone is going to be a big brand defining moment for Uniqlo.

I thought you were talking about him qualifying for Tokyo.

As I said originally it’s not a good deal for Uniqlo.

Hmm I cannot imagine Rafa on Red Bull. How much more pumped up is he going to be out there?

That's a great idea, though.

Red Bull promotes 'extreme sports'. Taking extremely long in between points does not make a sport 'extreme'.

Re endorsements, I've always wondered what the non-endorsed player gets for the patches he wears when playing a 'show' match on tv. 10k? That's a lot of free advertising, good payday potential.

I’ve heard that $10k number too - sounds reasonable.

I am not surprised at all. Roger is so marketable, it makes perfect sence. He is going to continue make money long after he retires.

Thanks for the reply. Wow. I didn't expect that. That is a very impressive number.

I know that you can't give specifics on particular players, but can you give us some kind of a range of how much players get to endorse, just a string across the industry. From say a Challenger qualie level player up to what a top ten player might expect to get, if they were endorsing a particular string only. I am not expecting to get names or specific contract numbers for your players, of course. It would be interesting to hear the range though.

I will say this, there aren't many players who are getting paid by racket companies that endorse a separate string brand (only lower ranked Head players are allowed to use string stencils that I know of ) This is because the racket companies usually won't contractually allow it or they take out the bonuses in their contract if they do ( I know this as we dealt with this multiple times!!). We had multiple top 50 players ready to switch and stencil but couldn't get it done.

A challenger qualies player is most likely just getting free string for stenciling and may or may not have a racket sponsor. challenger main draw will have a racket contract giving them free rackets, strings, etc ( maybe a performance or ranking bonus). If they are young / high upside player / former top 10 ITF junior, then they usually have an agent and get a pretty good sized contract all based on the "what could be". I would estimate between $30-100k, but that includes rackets. Yonex is over paying everyone and I could imagine they paid hefty price tags for Shapolav and Tiafoe, much more than the sum i mentioned.

Lastly, I will leave you with this. We were in talks with a top 10 player for string only and it was at the higher end of the range I gave above.

As I thought; a certain elite number of players get free gear, prize money, and endorsement money. Who pays for all the airplane travel and hotel costs? Those get mighty expensive!

Has it even been confirmed that Fed is getting $30mn/year?

Thought that was just rumours and in the PC on the opening Monday of Wimby, Fed said the figures being mentioned are pure speculation.

Absolutely, UNIQLO don't just do tennis gear, he will be their brand face. Expect to see posters of him wearing Uniqlo cardigans in his dotage.

1. Nadal gets $10 million, he signed a 5 year $50 million contract with Nike in 2013 which expires this year. So it will be interesting to see if he signs with Nike again or goes to another brand if he gets a better deal. The contract Federer signed in 2008 with Nike also averaged $10 million for 10 years. But as per reports they were trying to reduce it. I won't be surprised if they did the same with Nadal. Tennis market is not big enough to justify huge payouts. That said, Federer's departure from Nike may work in Nadal's favor. They probably wouldn't want to lose Nadal as well. Djokovic is already tied up elsewhere.

2. Federer's Uniqlo deal is just rumors. I highly doubt Uniqlo executives are stupid enough to pay him that much, especially after his retirement. He himself said that the numbers were just speculations. I am sure he is getting significantly more than he would have gotten at Nike, otherwise he wouldn't have moved, but the $300 million/10 year figure sounds like pure fiction to me.

I haven't ruled out the fact Fred may be actually planning on playing ATP Tokyo tourney again. Maybe not this year but it's possible he could play it again if he decides to stop playing Laver Cup.

Oh, you abandoned your assumed blunt behaviour for a moment to ask a sensible question?!

Too bad that such occurrences show your fake persona around here, but since you asked: according to the poster Rhino, Nike sold 10000 RF caps in Cincinnati alone.

I hate to break it for you, but if that figure is correct and Uniqlo is on their of game during the Olympics they will literally make tens of millions from Federer merchandise alone, not speaking about the indirect impact.
