ESPN Coverage of Women's Final

Same thing everywhere. From the moment the semi finals ended you had so called experts like Navratilova and Tracy Austin talking about Serena almost exclusively and how it was going to be tough for Kerber to hang with her.

WHY?

Kerber beat Kasatkina who had two amazing wins her previous two rounds, she beat Ostapenko who had been on fire, not to mention convincing earlier wins over one of the years breakout players in Osaka, and Bencic who finally looked like she'd found form again knocking off a couple of seeds in her first few rounds, including the in decent form Nips Garcia.

Kerber has 2 slams to her name, she's beaten Serena in a major final, she's not meek enough to be intimidated by her, or bereft of game enough to be outclassed by her. She's got years of great Wimbledon results behind her, and she had a great run through.

This should have been built up as some epic encounter (though the final result obviously didn't deserve that :p) but instead it was just like Angie Kerber was along for the ride.

Was it just me, but was the opening coverage and talk of the women's final by ESPN all about Serena? Don't get me wrong, Serena is the greatest female player of all time, but it seemed like they were handing her the trophy before the match even started. Kerber, who is absolutely no slouch and who has beaten Serena in a grand slam final before (Australian 2016), should've been given a little more acknowledgement. She's a fighter and an incredible player. I would say nobody redirects the ball better than her. I'm sure Serena will get to #24 and then #25 grand slams, probably at the Australian Open next year after winning the 2018 US Open, but Kerber is a legitimate contender that has now won 3 out of the 4 grand slams besides the French. Well done, Kerber! Also, well done to Serena for getting to the final, but ESPN needs to step up their game a bit. It should never be a victory lap. The coverage was totally biased.

<trigger warning, LMAO>

Not just ESPN, the whole MSM seems to have become sh*tfaced drunk on kumbayah feelz over this one.
Channel 7 here, yet again, was unwatchable. Serena being a mother was woven into every second sentence.

What made them go full rhetard this time was that it was a whole confluence of SJW/PC catnip obsessions.
A black woman had just "defeated" the core of white England, the royal family, and now a black woman was about to "defeat" sexism/racism at the "white privilege" slam wimbledon, and with her being a mother, it was just like pouring accelerant onto the blaze. Meghan was there, and a bunch of other faces they mentioned, even lewis hamilton was dragged along too for the performance/ritual dance.

I don't think half these demented cultists even care less about tennis tbh, it is just another vehicle to push their defective political religion.

But then the german ball machine went and ruined their little tea party LOL! Come to think of it I'm surprised that allusions of racism haven't been brought up against the ball machine in slimy opinion pieces in the guardian etc.

many jimmies will be rustled, many fat fingers will stab furiously at the report post button, I'm sure LOL!

In case you hadn't noticed but the standard method for selling anything these days is to create a sympathetic backstory.

So why would they not exploit her motherhood given this MO? What you need to explain is what you have against Serena Williams?

Williams wins the PR battle of the backstory, that's all. Kerber will be the main star one day if she remains consistent.

Exactly, Serena will struggle against two types of players; hitters and retrievers. If Ostapenko or Kvitova or Garbine are on, its lights out for Serena. If Wozniacki, Radwanska, Halep and obviously Kerber are on its lights out for Serena too. She has horrible mobility and unless she hits a(n) (immediate) winner or is gifted an error she can't win most of the points played. Thats a lot of points as evidenced by the Wimbledon final. Is Kerber that much better two years later or is Serena that much out of shape two years and a baby later?

Apparently, Jo Konta can be a problem for her too.
