If Federer could only win one more slam, which scenario would you pick -

1. Beating Nadal in the finals of Roland Garros - this would be a huge victory over his long-time nemesis on the red clay and give him multiple titles at every slam.

2. Wimbledon - This would put him alone at the top with 8 Wimbledons. May be the only man with 8 of any slam depending on what happens with RG in the future.

RG easily, only man with two of each in the Open Era. Seven is plenty at Wimbledon, I prefer a more diversified distribution if possible.

Hmm...2 of each in the open era....thats another matter entirely.

Winning his last slam and probably his last match beating Nadal in RG final, can't get any sweeter than this really.

the rafa scenario is too sweet not to take, even though i'd rather have wimbledon.

Wimbledon should be the most interesting tournament this year.. i mean we know that either Dejesus or Rafa will win RG, we know that either Murray or Dejesus will win the USO..

But at Wimbledon there are a lot of possibilities.

It is an interesting question. It is a pretty difficult one to me.

I'd love to see him accomplish both - slaying the giant at Roland Garros is something every Fed fan has wanted to see.

But, standing alone with 8 of the most cherished prize in tennis is equally as enticing.

As much as I'd love to see him pull it off at Roland Garros, I think I'd probably have to go with the Wimbledon. For starters, the only thing that makes this a question is his history with Rafa on that court. Otherwise, its a no brainer, right? But, Wimbledon is the prize in tennis - so to set yourself apart from the rest with that 8th title and become the undisputed King of Grass would be the better accomplishment, IMO, than having two of each in the Open Era. Still, it's a tough call.

I thought DeJesus was a baseball player. When did he start playing tennis?

Wimbledon hands down. It's by far the most pretigious tournament in history and Fed with 8 titles would stand alone.

Yes. I agree that the odds are pretty strong in favor of those duos at those two tournaments.

And, I agree that Wimbledon seems to offer the most competition. I think all of the Big 4, if healthy and on form, have very similar odds of winning there. And, I also think another player or two, like Tsonga, might have a better shot of making a run on the grass. So, not only is the odds more even for the top 4, but a few outside of that group might have a more realistic chance at it (albeit a slim one likely).

Why in the world would anyone want to see Nadal reach a French Open final? That's 1200 points!
Anyway, obviously answer number 2.

The FO if that's the only place he beats Rafa. He'd have a double career slam and beating Nadal at the FO would be sweet after the beatings. I'd put beating Rafa at Wimbledon above this though.

I think having 2 at each major would be an amazing feat. An 8th Wimby is great as well but apart from silencing the fanboys who spend their days arguing whether Fed or Pete is the grass goat, I don't necessarily see how an 8th Wimby would prove anything more than we already know i.e. that Fed is one of the best ever, if not the best, on grass.

Of course I am not a Fed fan so I have illegally entered this thread. I will show myself out.

RG hands down. If Rafa wins 10 RG titles to me it doesn't prove much other than the fact that he is the CLAY GOAT which is already the case since a long time ago. Same applies to Fed, he doesn't need another Wimbly, of course 8 titles would be icing on the cake. But beating Nadal in an RG final can just have a large affect on the rivalry between the two.

In any case, it's not like these two are going to be playing many more games.

RNadal losing to RFederer at Roland Garros is an impossibility. RNadal has beaten it into RFederer that RFederer will never, EVER beat RNadal at Roland Garros, much like a puppy's owner would beat it. :p

If I was a Fed fan, I would say RG. Even though both would be massive records, multiple titles in all 4 slams is the more impressive feat of the 2.

I chose Wimbledon because the only way to win RG against Rafa is huge decline of Nadal. Of course true Federer fans will choose both.

I love them both, but beating Rafa at RG would be the highlight for a man who has done just about everything he has put his racquet to.

+1. But I'm sure you meant to add "...at least to sane people. The Sampras Jock Sniffers would still declare Pete the best. And add that he could have won Roland Garros 3 or 4 times, but he didn't want to show off."

Wimbledon. The early quote about 2 of each is interesting. But everyone knows Fed was the 2nd best clay player a large chunk of his career - and got 1 RG title.

Clearly FO win beating nads but why not be greedy and have both. He will never beat Nadal in a clay final he had his chance in 2011 and looked unsure of himself.

Wimbledon. He is not going to beat Nadal at RG, so forget that.

Well, it WAS posed as a hypothetical. Kind of like "if you could only have one super power what would it be and why?" None of us are gaining super strength/super speed/flight/etc. any time soon but it's fun to ruminate about.

Beating Nadal in the RG final would effectively redeem Federer after years of being Nadal's whipping boy on clay (and the current clay-like hardcourts). Pretty much would end any GOAT discussion.

Yep. Beating Rafa at RG would be nice, but two french opens mean nothing (except of tt boards). Now, if Rafa hadn't lost to Soderling, this may be different - to be the only man to beat the clay GOAT?
