Fed v Coria: What Happened?*spoiler*

I just caught the last set of the abovementioned match, and i was wondering if anyone had seen the match the whole way through, particularly the 2nd set. 60 1st set, then gets demolished 6-1? Cruises through an 'easy' 3rd, but wtf? Is Fed deliberately throwing the second set of hsit matches to increase the entertainment value? The 3rd was all Fed...a truly bizarre match. So what gives?

He didn't play horribly in the 2nd set, he just had a few too many errors at the wrong times. It was closer than the 6-1 score would have you believe. Coria did play some great shots at the right times also. I would say it was unlucky that Fed lost that set 6-1 watching the points.

From what I saw it was a super ugly match. Federer dominated a lackluster Coria in the first set. Then I think Roger tanked the second set in order to perhaps boost Coria's spirits. He willingly won his last serve game in the 2nd set, and throughout the second put forth extrememely little effort and seemed to hit shots out on purpose.

Interesting perspectives...i just wonder if the lack of 'focus' in the 2nd is due to the lengthy lay-off (physical and psychological), or if Fed is so aware that he can crush someone like Guilllermo if and when ever he feels like it...like i said a really bizarre match. Is Roger making life difficult for himself, just to negate Roger is Boring on this forum? hehe

Well it was a meaningless match for both players. Not surprised that it was bizarre.

I think Puerta-Davydenko might be as well.

I thought the 3rd set was much, much closer than the 6-2 score would indicate. Coria had many, many chances but missed by inches. Federer had to struggle to hold his serve in most of his service games, winning most at ad-in or 40-30. I thought Coria could of easily won that match but did seem to get a bit demoralized near the end there since he failed to capitalize on so many chances earlier in the 3rd set.

Here is what happened. Fed crushed Coria in the first set. In the second set Fed realized he would rather be spending his time with Mirka, not Coria.
In the third, he thought he had enough of the little whiner and finished him off right away.

Might have had something to do with staying up til 5 in the morning the night before to watch Switzerland's world cup qualifier ... I don't half wonder whether Roger feels so guilty at being the only top 5 player there that he's single handedly taking on a mission to be on court as long as he can and give the fans something to watch. Maybe he's even decided that this year he'll not drop a single match again winning the TMC but make sure he at least goes the distance in his matches to let people think they're getting closer again ... bit daft but the Coria scoreline was daft. When did Fed last lose a set 6-1?

Why would anyone "tank" a match here? The winner of each round robin match gets 120,000$ Thats more prize money than winning some tourtaments.

1st set, Federer was playing his usual dominating style. won 6-0.

2nd set, Federer noticed that Coria was contemplating whether to throw in the towel and retired due to his heavily taped ankles and feet and looking lack-lustre. Federer might have gotten affected because he wanted more match practise before his semifinals. So he started playing badly, letting Coria have some motivation. Federer started playing better at 0-5 down, but Coria started to really believe there is something mentally disturbing Federer and he actually have a chance...Coria's confidence was growing and developing into a small "orange" tiger. Federer did not have much match practise, that's why the matches before Coria, he also lost the 2nd set with Nalbandian and Ljubicic after dominating the 1st set. Federer might have difficulties sustaining his level of concentration in the 2nd sets for all these matches because of his lack of match play. Another point why the 2nd set went this way was the fact that Federer played a very mentally absorbing match with Ljubicic and he was mentally drained. Likewise, Ljubicic also suffered a very disappointing loss to Federer and was mentally drained, that's why Ljubicic was very lacklustre and was mentally out of sorts when he played Nalbandian. Nalbandian also had a disappointing loss to Federer but Nalbandian got a good win against Coria, so Nalbandian's mood into his match against Ljubicic was positive and a winning outlook. But Ljubicic scored a win against Coria in his 1st match, lost his 2nd match narrowly against Federer, so Ljubicic was in a negative and had a defeated outlook. If Ljubicic had played Federer in his 1st match, Coria in his 2nd match, then played Nalbandian in the 3rd match, Ljubicic should win his match against Nalbandian but with a closer score. So I believe Federer might have also be feeling a bit of a mental drain or he might feel abit of an awkwardness because Nalbandian and Ljubicic had given him tough 3 setter matches and here is Coria giving him a 6-0 set and almost wanted to retire. Federer got affected or in his heart and mind, he was confident of letting a set go, so he just simply swung freely and tried out some net plays, looping shots, down-the-line shots which had no effort and just sailed wide and long.
Another point might be going on in Federer's mind that Federer feels that he is an Ambassador for tennis as a No. 1 and an Ambassador for this Master Cup and Federer opened the new Shanghai stadium. And with all these pull-outs by the top players, he felt bad that if he played too good and Coria retired from the match, the Chinese fans will be further disappointed.
I was expecting Federer to come back after 0-5 and win 7-5 but I think he got too used to giving up points with all his errors that it is very hard to gain back his supreme form like in the 1st set. But his final game in the 2nd set was an improvement of form compared to the rest of the 2nd set. Another possibility is that players like Sampras and Federer always play a poor match before a major match. Federer does not want to peak too fast, he wants to pace himself for the semifinals and peak ultimately for the finals. Federer also does not want to humiliate Coria 6-0 6-0 and Coria have some revenge grudge against him when they meet at a big match venue like French Open when Coria is comfortable with the clay surface and Federer has also the motivation factor to improve on his next performance with Coria after a poor 3 sets win at Masters Cup. Federer was not at all worried because this match was quite redundant because he already secured the semifinal berth but he still wants to win it because of all his winning streaks are at stake. Even his GF Mirka was Smsing on her handphone, not really bothered with the match.
Coria and his team and wife were perplexed at winning the 2nd set and were enjoying the match itself.

3rd set, Federer's opening game...He was playing like the 1st set, hitting good backhands and forehands, blasting balls into court, which is a telling sign that he unconsciously or deliberately played badly in the 2nd set. Because the transformation of his improved play was like a switch, an immediate drastic turnaround, from bad to world-class, which is astounding. Coria was also happy that he got a set from Federer, that's why Coria was grinning so much when he shook hands with Federer after the match. Coria knew he had no chance in the 3rd set and went back to serving woes and kept serving double faults.

This is what I feel about what happened in the match.

Roger "played down to his competition." It happens.

It's a well known phenomenon, and it manifested itself especially *because* this really was a meaningless match.

How was it meaningless? There were a couple important records on the line. You can play down the importance, but Federer was playing to have the possibility of having his name in the record books a couple more times. I realize Federer was not facing elimination...

Pete was *really* motivated by "the record book." I just don't see that same determination in Roger.

He'd just had a long lay-off. He was a "lock" for the Semi's. In reality, the match was very low on the importance scale.

(Okay. "Meaningless" was just a figure of speech. Better?)

I think Roger is *more* motivated by the record book than Pete was. Pete didn't care about minor tournaments - Roger goes out to win everything, and it shows. Sampras never had a year like Federer's had for the last two years, in terms of complete domination.

Roger might deflect the questions about the comparisons with the greats now, but wait until he gets nearer the goals.

I think Roger has you believing his comments about the records. Top guys know how to take pressure off themselves. I think he acts like he doesn't care so he doesn't get a million questions on it during press conferences and psyche himself out. This allows him to play more loose.

Well, he surely played "loose" in that second set!

You both may be right about his aspirations for the record book. Maybe I've "bought" his spin. We'll see.

Roger Federer is the best tennis player in the world, at this moment, but he's still human and, therefore, beatable. Coria may not be Federer, but is still an excellent player himself. Lately, Coria has been having a hard time ('going through hell' is a better way of putting it) getting his 1st serves in. Well and his 2nd serves, too. So, he has been giving his matches away. His oponents really don't have to do much, so they don't!!! This is what happened to Federer. For some reason, in that 2nd set, Coria was serving a lot better and playing as well as ever, I should say. Federer was caught out of guard and out of focus. Luckily for him, he re-gained some of it back on the 3rd set. Federer fans don't want to beleive it, but he was hopeless during that 2nd set.

The only time Fed is ever hopeless is when he is shaking hands at the net after losing a match, and that happens oh so rarely these days. Coria would have to pump himself full of some kind of Incredible Hulk juice to be able to beat Fed on hard.

Yeah Roger really plays lots of loose matches, and doesnt seem motivated. I mean the guy has dropped a few sets since the french open.
C'mon. Give hm a break; he has an uncanny level of consistency. We question him if he plays a loose game. Remember how Ljubcic played after dominating the indoor season losing in straights to Nalbandian. Or how poorly Ivan played in the slams this year despite huge performance in minor events. Fed's consistency is just so head and shoulders above anybody in the open era, except maybe Borg.

It's called "These fans payed a lot of money to see me, and just finished watching a terrible match, so I'll give them 3 sets. The only way I iknow how to lose is to deliberately mis-hit the ball. If I half try I'll win. So that's what I did"

Big deal he lost one set badly. Whohoo he regained his form and one. He might have taken a mental bathroom break becuase the first set was way too easy. Federer is not God, he lost one set, so what? He used the true mark of a champion and came back and dominated.
As i said, 120,000$ is on the line, no one throws matches at the TMC.

does anyone here hate when coria fakes an injury??

He's my fav argentine player, and believe me i do get really angry when he does that. At the begining i used to defend him when someone said that he was faking those injurys.

But now ... i feel kind of stupid because it's so obvious he is faking!!
