  • Beat his greatest rival Nadal in the final in the 5th set after being down a break in the 5th set !
  • Beat 4 top 10 players - Berdych, Nishikori, Wawrinka, Nadal
  • Won three 5-set matches - Nishikori, Wawrinka, Nadal
  • At 35 and half years, oldest grand slam champion in open era after Rosewall
  • All this in the first tournament back after 6 months of not playing any official match !

I was wrong on this one... I have always believed Roger had a shot at 18 but he'd need a more favorable draw, similar to some of the ones he didn't win over the last 5 years... and coming into this years AO with 6 months off and a low seed, beating all those top players would take a toll on a 35 year old. To take out 4 top ten players is an impressive feat, I don't care who got eliminated. Before the tournament started, I'd said that if he can keep all of his points from AO last year it's a major accomplishment, but now he's got #18, and over Rafa no less. Tremendous win for the maestro.

According to ESPN, Federer beating 4 top 10 players at the slam happened only a few times(5?) in the past. The last player who beat 4 top ten was Wilander back in 1982 French Open.

Correct me if I'm wrong.:)

Still UN-BEL18VABLE!

Glad I didn't skip a heart-beat. There were moments when it was just racing. Some of the shots were Breathtaking, as if we haven't seen many.

Truly, a match for the ages to come!

Guys, don't forget that we still have Wimbledon to come this year, where Roger usually hits his peak. I think he would do anything to have another multi-slam year like the good old days. I don't think he would mind limping for the rest of his life if it meant going out on a high like that. When Roger throws it all on the line like that, then look out!! Even at 35/6 he is still a force to be reckoned with, especially at Wimbledon. Look for him to nab #19 at SW19. :)

It would not happen when you're in Top 10. Only a player ranked lower can do it.

Today was not that unbelievable to me. Yes, the occasion and everything was wonderful. No doubt. Would never have expected these 2 in the final.

Match result not really shocking though. I knew this would be Roger's greatest chance to beat Nadal here. The guy that lost to Berdych etc had not just gone away. Slipped so much since their last match here in 2014, while Roger played with his tools and came up with the correct configuration.

Hats off to all those who had faith, I certainly did not.
hats off to @Feather and others who called this. Actually, hats off to that rogue @Rusty Shackleford for calling this, but he was doing a jinx on Federer.

And thanks to @sureshs for jinxing Nadal again.
I don't believe in jinxes. I really thought Federer had a great chance to get this because of many factors. I believe Nadal made some errors that cost him the match (the main being failure to use his FHDTL everytime he created space by hitting deep to Fed's BH).

But Fed played an incredible match at times. Simply great. I'm glad he got to #18. Hopefully this is an inspiration to Nadal, who is also a geezer.

Yeah, Nadal has improved a lot from his form in 2015 and even 2016. Butnot back to 2013 levels, which is to be expected given that he is 4 years older.

Federer's physical conditioning has been incredible. At 35 years old and 6 months off the court, it looks like he's made a pact with the Devil. :D

...or like he just had six months off during which he spent a lot of time getting in better shape. It was like a 6-month off-season instead of one. He looked refreshed this tournament. Sadly, he also strained himself. Hopefully, it's just something minor that will recede with a few days of rest.

How about '20 with 20, eh?

It could be doable if the court/ball speed are made faster. This AO has stricken a great balance. We have seen decent amount of unreturned service, decent amount of one two punches, and decent amount of 5+ shot rallies. If the US and W follows the trend, then Fed has a decent chance. Murray's loss shows the current elite level of the men's tour can't deal with the faster conditions.

Come out of retirement in 20 to win the 20

Just accepted sureshs. And in the process became smoother than him.

Yes, he obviously has been working out a lot in the off-season, and possibly also worked on his serve and backhand quite a bit. Seems he was able to keep his mental demons at bay to quite an extent, too. All those BP's lost, and yet he kept going. Don't know whether it was desperation, or whether he just did not want yet another loss to Nadal.
