Federer is now second of all time in 5 set matches won at majors

All those that say Federer is mentally weak may be surprised that Federer is actually second on the all time list of 5 set matches won at majors. Djokovic over took him with his 2 5 set matches at the FO this month.
Federer has let a lot of 5 setters slip ( my username suggests this ) but equally there have been a lot of occasions Federer could and should have lost yet dug deep and won. The Marin Cilic QF 2 sets down at Wimbledon and Julian Benneteau 2012 Wimbledon matches spring to my mind that Federer had no business of winning yet did. You can also add the Haas match at the FO which was pivotal to his legacy. This image however proves that over 5 sets, Djokovic is the most difficult to dispatch of

He’s still mentally weak. We have ample chokeage exhibits against Nadal and djoker in various 500 events and all throughout the majors over the years. Too many to list. You could write a book on how many deciding sets chokes he has against Nadal and djoker. If he even converted on Half of them, he could have retired 4-5 years ago with most records in tact. And we wouldn’t be watching him at Halle at 55 years old trying to revive the glory days. Fed shouldn’t even be playing anymore. He should be on the senior tour at this point playing exos with Sampras, Roddick and Agassi

Yes that doesn’t look good on his resume. It’s painful as a fed fan.

Yeappp , pretty much ....but proves they still got the job done despite the issues. No matter how good you are, even the best have off days
Maybe, we should differentiate those five setters in two categories:
a. Matches that the player was the clear favorite, but almost blew it, escaping the loss in 3 sets. (e.g., Fed vs Benneteau in Wim 2012)
b. Matches considered competitive and difficult, in which the player showed great resolve and proved what he’s made of, prevailing in five sets (e.g. Fed vs Nadal AO 2017)

That stat is not good at all. It means they did in 5 what they should’ve done in 3.
In Fed's case this is probably somewhat true given his famous ability to choke from up 2 sets but tennis is a sport where your opponent also has a say in how the match goes, especially if you're in a competitive field like Nole and Pete (who has just one less win than Fed despite playing 7 years less)

Makes me want to put Sampras ahead of Nadal again. Way fewer matches, 29 in 5 going clutch and of course only 1 of 14 Slam Final victories going to 5. Nadal 3-3 in five set finals.
Pete is ahead of Rafa. He was the clear dominant player of his era. Rafa is a high ranking ATG worthy of all the praise he gets but will either be #2 or #3 of his era when all is said and done.
